About this project
A documentary film telling the story of Alex Rust's incomparable round-the-world voyage aboard his sailboat, Bubbles.
Chasing Bubbles is a documentary about the journey and spirit of Alex Rust, a farm boy turned day trader from Indiana who, at 25, abandoned his yuppie life in Chicago, bought a modest sailboat, and set out to sail around the world, learning as he journeyed.
The documentary will pull from sailing footage shot between 2009 and 2012 aboard S.V. Bubbles by Alex and his crew members…an ever changing group of wanderers, adventurers, backpackers, childhood buddies, family, office workers on leave, and, literally, anyone that was willing to hop aboard and have a good time. With waterproof cameras rolling at almost every moment, Alex documented everything from equator crossing rituals in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to parties in huts with the last cannibals on earth a thousand miles up the Sepik River in Papau New Guinea…not to mention multiple pirate encounters, hurricane force winds, islands that hadn’t had outside visitors in 40 years. Needless to say, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
After completing his circumnavigation, Alex was committed to creating a documentary to share his experience - not only the wild adventure, but also about the people he met and what it meant to him. He traveled for months shooting interviews with people who crewed on Bubbles during the trip and spent six days throughout November and December 2012 recording intimate on-camera interviews discussing his trip and motivations. Alex was deeply passionate about recording the story working tirelessly on this documentary until his untimely passing in May of 2013.
We've archived all the footage and developed a narrative thread for the documentary. Now…we need your help to assemble it, develop map-animation sequences (that Alex conceived of) and complete the film.
We plan to debut CHASING BUBBLES in Alex’s hometown of Seymour, Indiana, enter it into independent film festivals, and then post it on the internet, for free, for everyone to see. Alex wanted to tell the world this story. Let’s all help him do it.
Risks and challenges
Since Alex and Topher originally conceived of the project, Topher Cochrane, Laurie Adrianopoli, and Ross Gerber have been working nights and in spare time to shoot, archive and log all the footage, as well as to outline a narrative thread for the documentary.
We have happily donated our time for all work to date and have no intention of making money from the production and release of CHASING BUBBLES. Every penny raised will go directly to finishing the documentary.
Due to the scale of the project, we need to enlist the full-time attention of a team of professionals in order to finish it. This team will include:
-Two video editors full-time for approximately 30 days
-A team of animators to build animated map sequences to help the viewer understand the scale of Alex's journey
-A colorist to make the footage look fantastic (there is a lot of footage from damaged cameras that needs to be tweaked)
-An audio engineer to clean up the sound and mix the music we're having composed
The individual editors and animators who are earmarked for this project are professional filmmakers and are otherwise booked on regular jobs. They have generously agreed to work with us at a significantly discounted rate due to their interest in the project.
We’re asking you to help us give these talented people the money they need to pay their rent while they focus on making CHASING BUBBLES an amazing movie and something that would do justice to the incredible adventure that Alex completed.
Once funded, we anticipate CHASING BUBBLES will be ready for release in the fall of 2014.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
