"No You Can't, Yes I Can"
"No you Can't, yes I can" is an inspirational children's book telling the story of a young boy with dreams of pursuing his passion as an elite basketball player. Along the way he is faced with obstacles and people telling him that his dreams are not attainable.
As people tell him "No You Can't Achieve," He responds "Yes I can, because I believe."
Throughout the story you will follow his journey as he moves past challenge after challenge and Na-Sayers after Na-Sayers to realize his dreams coming to a reality. The story is based on a true story and many of the details are a direct relation to my life where I have constantly had to overcome battles, challenges, obstacles, and persons trying to discourage me from achieving my dreams.
I am hoping this book can inspire not only Children, but also all individuals regardless of their age. So many of us have dreams that for some reason we don't fight to achieve or as children we are told to withhold from our dreams for various reasons. My goal is, through my own story, provide the inspiration for children and adults to chase their passion no matter what obstacles might stand in their way.
Illustrations to inspire young artists
Besides for the cover and the creation of the character, which was done by a friend and an amazing artist, all of the illustrations will be completed by youths - high school age or younger. I originally wanted to have the art work completed all by a professional, but the more I thought about it, I wanted to share the inspiration and allow young artist the opportunity to have their artwork published in a book. We have selected a group of young inspiring artists who have submitted art work for the book. We are very excited to be a book that not only shares an inspiring story, but is actually a platform for inspiring artists to showcase their passion and talents.
I have also created a website www.chasemypassion.com that aligns with the book as well.
Once the book is released, we will direct readers to go to the website for 2 different Reasons:
1. We want the readers to go to the website and share their own "No You Can't, Yes I Can" stories. The goal of this is to have readers think about their dream and either share a triumph or a personal battle along their journey. As new visitors come to the website we hope they gain motivation and inspiration from the readers of the book sharing their own personal story and then continue the pattern and share their own story for others to read.
2. Each one of the young illustrators for the book, will be given a page to showcase their talents. Readers can come to the website and view the illustrators profile, learn about the artists story/path, as well as view additional art work. Again we are hoping that the book will inspire these young talented artists to reach for the stars while providing them a platform to showcase their talent.
My Vision for Sharing the Book with the World:
I am very excited to share this book with kids and adults of all ages. My plan is to do readings at schools, with sports teams, at hospitals, and other venues where inspiration is needed. I remember when I was sitting in the hospital, just learned that I had cancer, sad and upset, people would come in and lift my spirits and others within the unit. I would love to give back with this story and share the story of "Jay" and how he overcame battles similar to the ones they are now facing and realized his dreams. This story is all about passion and determination and comes from my real life journey. To say that I am excited about sharing my story with others would be a massive understatement.
MY Plans with the money I get from KickStarter:
While I have put in hundreds of my own money, the cost to self publish is going to exceed my monetary ability to make this project happen. This is where I need your help.
Phase 1: KickStarter:
With the donation of $2,500 my goal is to get at least 400 books published. This is not my ultimate goal, but I don't want to be greedy and I would be extremely extremely happy to get the first 400 books up and into the hands of readers who need a dose of inspiration and motivation.
Phase 2: Get more books onto the market and into more kids/parents/teachers/hospitals hands.
For every cent that I go over $2,500, I will be purchasing more and more books and will focus my efforts on expanding the market of the book. While $2,500 dollars would be absolutely amazing, the more money I receive the more I can really "chase my dream" of inspiring through my story.
A Big Thank you:
I want to Thank the Jimmy V foundation for allowing me to utilize their name and their logo for the book. I was privileged enough to win the Jimmy V comeback player of the year award while playing basketball at Arizona State University after battling Cancer during my Sophomore season.
