We're self-financing the feature film of our dreams, but we need a little extra help taking good care of our amazing talent.
THE WIDOWERS is a comedy about grief. Jake and Jonathan are best friends whose wives have died in a car accident. When Jonathan drags the barely-functioning Jake to a grief counseling retreat for young widowers at an upstate lake house, they both find more than they bargained for.
Pam, the eccentric leader of the retreat, hides her deeply questionable therapeutic techniques beneath a relentlessly cheery attitude. The other widowers include a shy wallflower, an unrepentant sociopath, a sweet-natured drug addict, and a pained, angry transplant from the Widows' Camp across the lake who insists that, since her partner was a woman, she belongs with the widowers.
As they struggle with Pam's bizarre approach to healing, Jake and Jonathan not only have to face their grief, but must also confront a dark secret from their past that may change their friendship forever.
Charred Oak Films has been developing this, our first feature film, for almost three years. We now have personal funds saved to begin photography this spring in upstate New York. We will shoot the bulk of the screenplay during May, and work over the summer to compile a rough cut and raise additional funds necessary to complete shooting and enter post-production in 2013.
At this stage, although we have painstakingly saved up 40 grand of our own cash, we're just a bit short on taking really good care of our amazing cast and crew. Since we are producing this film on a shoestring, every single person working with us to realize our vision will be volunteering their time upfront to support the project. Although we certainly hope to pay them when we successfully raise the full budget, the very least we can do NOW is to provide them with clean, safe accommodations and plenty of tasty food and snacks.
Decent food and a decent place to sleep is the backbone of any low-budget indie production, and we don't want to fail our talented collaborators. So help us get over the hump and make everybody (ourselves included...) comfortable and productive.
We have some great personalized rewards to get you closer to our filmmaking process, and in the coming days we will start to introduce you to some of the people you're supporting. Watch for updates! And long live low-budget filmmaking!
