Award-winning trumpeter & composer Charlie Porter is making his debut album! The self-titled album will feature ten varied, original compositions, as well as a little-known gem by Duke Ellington, only ever recorded once, in 1940.
With nine ensembles comprised of twenty-one of Portland's best jazz musicians, this album will showcase Charlie's writing and playing within a diverse spectrum of sound, from solo to sextet. It begins with a solo trumpet track, and then builds from duo up to sextet and then back down from quintet to solo trumpet, for the last track. The chiastic, or symmetrical structure of the album and the different instrumentation of each track help to conceptually unify the pieces, yet send the listener on a journey of musical diversity.
The performers will include: Mel Brown (drums), Jon "sticky" Lakey (bass), Alan Jones (drums), Tim Gilson (bass), Tim Rap (drums), Majid Khaliq (violin), David Evans (tenor sax), Dan Gaynor (piano), Tom Wakeling (bass), John Moak (trombone), John Nastos (alto sax), Christopher Brown (drums), Greg Goebel (piano), Dylan Sundstrom (bass), David Goldblatt (piano), Michael Raynor (drums), Bill Athens (bass), Chuck Israels (bass), Christopher Woitach (guitar) and George Colligan (piano).
The album will be available not only as a download or CD, but also as a vinyl record! So, for all of you audiophiles out there or lovers of vintage sound, your contribution can help, not only make the album possible, but enable us to put a limited edition Charlie Porter first pressing vinyl LP in your hands - how cool!
To those of you who supported the last two highly successful Kickstarter projects Charlie was involved in ("Joyful Noise" by the Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra and "FilmHarmonic Brass Plays John Williams"), you are, no doubt, aware of how successful they turned out. Both albums have garnered high praise in reviews by prominent publications and airplay, worldwide.
Why Kickstarter? Think of it as pre-sales - for a minimum contribution of $10 you are essentially ordering this album in advance. For just $1 you can get a digital download of one of the tracks. If you can give more, we have some other great rewards (check them out to the right). Every bit helps, so please give what you can. Your contributions will help to ensure that we have what it takes to get this album off the ground. As you can imagine, there are lots of costs to cover, including: the recording studio & engineer, producer, mixing & mastering, licensing fees, fees for the musicians, cost of CD design and printing, etc. A minimum of $8,000 is necessary to cover these expenses. Any funds raised above this minimum goal shall be used for a PR campaign for the album.
Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
If we are not able to reach our funding goal, we will not receive the money that has been pledged. This means there will be no album or that it will need to be privately funded.
If we are funded, there could be other challenges. There could certainly be delays, since we are using a lot of different services and contractors to produce our album - this is a multi-step process with lots of components that have to come together to deliver a completed CD project. There are any number of unforeseen costs. There could even be licensing issues that may arise, as we are performing one non-original composition.
In any case, if funded, the rewards will be delivered, perhaps earlier or a little later than the anticipated dates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
