Thanks to everyone who have helped us hit our goal. Whether you've pledged, tweeted us out, blogged about us, or just helped spread the word, because of you our goal has been realized.
We aren't done just yet though. Months of hard work has gone into this campaign and we've created some extra stretch goals just to keep it all going. For every extra $5,000 we raise we will release a new design. So keep it going, keep helping us spread the word. Thank you for such amazing support.
Want to unlock the rest of the collection? Maybe you want a sneak peek into the hats we are currently designing? If you can help us hit these stretch goals, you will unleash some other goodies that are all apart of our Negro League collection.
We heart vintage t-shirts! Long story short....after scouring through thousands of vintage threads in college, we felt a serious need to bring back the good 'ol days of soft, quality cloth. We missed what was good about true vintage, not only the garments of the past, that 50/50 stuff, but the stories those t-shirts told. We wanted to bring those stories back to life, using the t-shirt as our canvas to express that. We're not talking about a logo slapped on the chest and produced to the masses, but tangible elements that create a conversation piece. Those conversations come from our love for sports, music, history and pop-culture in general. Our t-shirts are a tribute to what once was and what comes next. In other words, it's Vintage Made Fresh!
After experiencing the growing pains of a startup company, learning about the textile industry and figuring out what it really takes to turn your inspiration into a successful brand, we launched Charlie Hustle in May of 2012.
We are a full year into business and have been able to take some of that knowledge gained and build a solid community around our brand almost strictly through social media and word of mouth. It's basically a cult following. We continue to see various levels of success, especially locally as we've had the pleasure of sharing our love for our city through our designs.
Along with our website (charliehustleshop.com) our product is sold in several local boutiques and have plans to build on that significantly this Fall. While we continue to grow and gain momentum, our small business has been built entirely on our own funding and even a little credit card debt.
A lot of time, research and sweat equity has gone into our brand and we feel that shows. We ship packages out of our own space, handle the day-to-day operations on limited time and give everything we have to ensure we continue to make a great product and make sure our customers are taken care of at the end of the day.
With that said, we felt Kickstarter would be a wonderful opportunity to help us build our brand new Negro Leagues Collection. That's right! We recently obtained licensing from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City and in order to give it the justice it deserves, we are seeking $20,000 to help us launch our collection.
So here is what we have in the works....
Having the opportunity to work with Negro League Baseball is a huge step for our brand and even more so an opportunity to teach America's youth about that era. With this project we will be able to build an entire collection of tees and art around the Negro Leagues and really tell their triumphant stories of not only what baseball was like back in that era, but the experiences those players went through.
Our goal is to use the t-shirt as a canvas to bring the Negro Leagues to life, preserving the legacies of not only Jackie Robinson, but legends like Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige and Rube Foster. Teams like the Kansas City Monarchs and the Pittsburgh Crawfords. We need your help to do that.
Are you interested yet?
We certainly appreciate it, but just in case, here is a look into our initial first 12 designs that you're going to help us launch and just a few of the stories we will be touching on.
Our main objective with this project is to really dig deep into the entire Negro Leagues portfolio and explore the teams, players, coaches and elements of that era. Negro League baseball was a huge part of America's favorite pastime and has shaped the game that it is today. Some of the greatest players of all-time never even made it to the big leagues, and while the color barriers of our society created segregation, their legacies deserve recognition.
On top of that, you'll help us market our collection, stock more stores and branch out nationally, enabling us to share the stories of the Negro Leagues to the world. Furthermore, we will be attending our first major trade show in February (see the highest pledge level if interested in being apart) as we show off our collection to prospective buyers all over the map. Your pledge will allow us to take that next step.
Here is a little information on our current product and what we're all about...
We take great pride in the power of quality rather than exchanging it for a quick buck. All our products are American-made and well cared for. We use premium fabrics and insure every single item is prepared to our specifications before being sent to market.
Our attention to detail is an integral part of what makes us unique and helps us to connect with consumers. It's more than just printing t-shirts. Our shirts are soft, as if they had been previously worn to perfection. The fit and feel is important to us along with the perfect imperfections in design.
Charlie Hustle is also a private label. In distinguishing ourselves as a serious brand we've manufactured and stitched in our own tags. Vintage tees can be identified by the tag in the t-shirt. From Screen Stars (Fruit of the Loom) to Champion Blue Bar, anyone familiar with the history of textiles knows the importance of the tag. We wanted to incorporate that into our brand instead of confusing the message on our shirts by slapping a logo underneath.
These are the small things that matter to us, that matter to our fans and separates us from just another t-shirt company. We not only want to share the stories of our greatest pastimes, we want to create a brand that our followers are proud of and can in some way be apart of. That's why teaming up with the Negro League Baseball Museum is quite simply a homerun!
So where is the money going you ask?
After months of planning financials and the campaign in general, we've strategically came up with a goal of $20,000 to start off with.
We felt a crowd-funding platform like this would not only help us seek that kind of funding, but allow us to share our brand with a willing community. In a sense, it works as a viral marketing campaign as well.
We also understand that our number one priority with this project is to come through on all the pledges and to make sure that community is being taken care of the same way they have taken care of us. It's likely that 30% of our funding will go directly towards fulfilling that promise.
We've already began the process of applying for upcoming trade shows that we've connected with and kept an eye on for several years now. We also hope to expand on our current licenses this Fall and expand our retail stores and boutique sales by 400%. In order to do this, we needed to set a goal that was relative to our plans.
Furthermore, we've tested our product, we've seen a level of success that we're certainly proud of, and now we want to share that with the world. It's been truly amazing and humbling to have been able to learn and go through the process of trial and error to get where we are at. We're grateful for all who have helped and who continue to do so and we want to maintain a level of assurance that we feel like we know what we're doing because of our experiences. With that said, come help us build an even better business and continue to grow.
More interested in your return? Well check it out. If you haven't had a chance to go through our lookbook or check out the site, give it a look. It may help you decide on which pledge level is best for you. Again everything helps, so if you just want to be apart of it, there is something for everyone.
Here is some more information along with some images of the more specific pledge levels. Please know that this is our first Kickstarter campaign so we have allowed ourselves a certain amount of time to come through on our promise all the while maintaining normal business activities. However, we certainly intend on exceeding those expectations.
First and foremost, if you haven't checked us out online, please do so and let us know what you think.

Risks and challenges
This isn't our first rodeo. We know it's not easy to build a brand that sticks. And while Charlie Hustle has been through it's first full year of business, the operators behind it have worked extremely hard to get to this point. Years of sweat equity have gone into the product we have now, trial and error has been the name of the game, but we feel we've got it right.
Yes, we continue to learn everyday, in all aspects of business, but that experience is what continues to help us grow and is invaluable to our future success.
As far as Kickstarter goes, we'll tackle it like anything else we do. We share the same quality values in creating a product that we are proud of that we do with customer service and making sure we treat them as if we were the ones shopping. This is a refined business and we are excellent at fulfilling our duties and tasks to ensure the best experience for the consumer. As long as you are able to understand the pledges and the timetables we have set in order to fulfill them, then it should be a seamless process.
We do understand some things change and different variables can create obstacles, but in the most transparent way possible we will be sure to communicate any issues that occur and keep you up-to-date on what's happening on our end.
If you have questions, definitely take a look at our FAQ or feel free to shoot us a message and we will do our best to respond in a timely fashion.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
