"The Deacon of Darkriver" is a traditional Icelandic ghost story about obsession stronger than death. The story has been adapted into a 28 page 5.5” x 8.5” (roughly A5) comic book by Sandra Ros Bjornsdottir. Some concept art will be included in the back as well as some fun information about the story.
This might be your only chance to buy the comic in this format and this price. Our hope is to be able to make at least two other stories in the near future, and then combine them into a hardcover book.
This IS your only chance to buy the comic in Icelandic!
The book is as gory as a Disney movie, but there is some artwork that might frighten younger children.
The story takes place a long time ago in an isolated valley located in the northern part of Iceland. A deacon and a woman from a local farm named Gudrun are dating, separated by a mighty river.
One night the deacon visited Gudrun and invites her to a Christmas party at his side of the river. On his way back home the bridge had collapsed. He tried to cross the river over the frozen ice, but fell into the cold deep river and drowned.
At Christmas, some mysterious man, who looks a lot like the deacon, still shows up to take Gudrun to the party… dumm dumm dumm!
Who Are You?
Sandra Ros Bjornsdottir (Icelandic elf) is an artist who has a hard time choosing what she loves more, making cartoons or comics. The Deacon of Darkriver has been a pet project that she almost finished a few months ago… until she decided it wasn’t good enough so she started over and made it better. Her portfolio is krumla.com
Charles Kantz (California boy) is a graphic designer with over 7 years of experience. He knows exactly how to make the comic print good. His portfolio is charleskantz.com
Why Are You Doing This?
We feel passionate about this story and want to share it with people who like comics, fairytales and/or Iceland. The main goal of this campaign is to spread the word about this comic and to be able to continue making other comic books based on Icelandic fairytales and maybe so Sandra can become a full time cartoonist.
Even though we appreciate your backing, we need more than just that - we need your voice. Please help us share the word about this project on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit, emails to friends, homing pigeons… Share the link to this page.
Where Will My Money Go?
All funds raised will go towards:
Printing 100 or more copies of the comic in English, and 20 or more in Icelandic (printing in the USA)
Printing costs of extra rewards and promotional materials (postcards, prints, etc.)
Kickstarter/Amazon fees (roughly 9% of final funding)
Postage and shipping supplies
Any applicable taxes
Maybe cover a table at APE Con in October
What Is That Next Comic You Are Talking About?
The next comic will be more lighthearted. It is called Búkolla and is about a farmer’s son trying to rescue his cow from trolls. The third one… we don’t know yet. It could be something voted on later.
When our Campaign has ended, we will be in touch with you via the Kickstarter Survey function. At that time, we will verify with you your shipping address as well as any other questions.
If a buyer of the COMIC STORE SPECIAL PACKAGE is local to the Bay Area or Reykjavik, Sandra offers to do a book signing free of charge.
Once again, should we exceed our funding goal, we'll be able to unlock some Stretch Goals - added "Thank Yous!" to all you folks who made it happen.
Risks and challenges
The comic itself is nearly complete and will be completed before the end of the campaign (the campaign will be updated regularly on its progress). So the main risk lies in printing and shipping. Charles has 7 years experience as a print designer, and has worked closely with our print vendor for several years. We will have more control over the production than other customers, meaning more quality control and a better finished product.
The comic and poster are printed in travel size for easy shipping and and will be in rigid envelopes so it should be in pristine condition once it gets to you. We do understand that some problems may occur, so we included some emergency funds in our budget in case of any complications.
Some of the pages displayed might change a little bit if the printed test copy doesn’t pick up on the textures.
Of course there is always a chance Sandra will go spontaneously blind or there is an earthquake that wipes out our printer, or there will be too many orders for us to meet the deadline. But we have calculated the cost of everything, set realistic goals and every pledge should be shipped out before the end of the year at the latest (except for some of the PAULTERGEIST pledge).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
