/\ Progress as of Tuesday, March 26.

Launched on International Women's Day!

For the past five years, I have been creating images of masses of pop culture characters. Due in part to my own identification with male characters, but also as an outgrowth of the source material itself, my pictures have tended to be boys clubs. This seems like something worth acknowledging and possibly changing.

This project will be a sampling of the often overshadowed and under-appreciated heroes that are pop fiction females. Built out of backer suggestions, I intend for this project to describe and comment on the variety of females in the field of visual fictional.

By pledging $15 you can suggest a character to be drawn into the picture. Because this project is about the backers as much as it is about the characters, please feel free to tell me your story about the character or a certain appearance of theirs that meant something to you.

Having already achieved the financial goal, I am now focusing on collecting the greatest number of characters to be drawn into the picture. To this end and to incentivize new backers, I am offering a stretch goal. If we can collect 150 suggestions by project close, I will invite every backer to add a second character. At this point I would also allow backers under $15 to suggest a character, thought they still won't get a print.

This stretch goal is a lot to hope for in the closing days of the project but I am confident the image will turn out wonderfully in any case and I would like nothing more than to present a broader collection and create a bigger pile of work for myself in a couple of weeks.

...

This is my third Kickstarter in 2013. In January I successfully funded a picture of 120 people's favorite characters and in February I created a picture of the Backer's favorite villains.

Posted below is a video by Yuyu Chen for the New York Times East Village Blog. It serves as an excellent primer if you are unfamiliar with my work.

Thank you for your interest and continued support. I am still amazed at the kindness and enthusiasm that this mode of working allows. It's a true gift that the audience can be as big an inspiration as the subject.

Risks and challenges

This is the third project in a series and I seem to have the formula down. One risk is that I am creating the rewards for the last project while I promote the new project. But, I think, with your support and encouragement I can make these pictures a reality.
