THE NEW RECORD
Today’s Not Yesterday is The Chapin Sisters first album of original music in five years. We recorded it at Jonathan Wilson’s gorgeous Five Star studio in Echo Park, CA, and we produced it along with two longtime collaborators, bass player Dan Horne (Conor Oberst, Allah Las, Jonathan Wilson) and drummer Jesse Lee (Gang Gang Dance, White Magic, Cass McCombs).
The story of our new album's Kickstarter campaign is simple. After self-releasing ‘A Date with the Everly Brothers’ through Kickstarter in 2013, with no formal distribution, selling it only off iTunes, our website, and a couple physical stores that requested copies, our connection to our fans felt stronger than ever. What initially seemed like a whim - a side project of Everly Brothers covers that we would quickly release and move away from - instead gave us a new ownership over our own careers. Selling directly to our fans, connecting with each physical copy sold, corresponding with people who found us through Kickstarter or a shared love of the Everly Brothers, awakened in us a new love for the music business. We liked being a record label. We liked taking packages to the post office and feeling a direct connection with you, the listener at the other end of the headphones. We couldn’t wait to do it all again with a new batch of songs, our first album of original material in five years.
The money we raise here will go towards mastering the album, manufacturing physical CDs, pressing vinyl, album artwork, perhaps a couple of music videos, a publicist and hopefully even a radio promotions person. Most importantly, it will allow us to continue to be a completely independent operation with control over our music and our lives.
Thank you for connecting to us, for helping our dreams become a reality. Thank you in advance for pre-ordering the album today. We can't wait to see you again out on the road. If we haven't met you yet, don't hesitate to come say hi after a show. We love you!
The past five years have been significant for us, and we hope that's reflected in the music we’ve written. We transitioned from our 20’s into our 30’s. We moved back to our childhood home of New York from our adopted home of Los Angeles. We both got married and are contemplating starting families, while still navigating the beloved Bohemian lifestyles we’ve adopted as professional musicians. There have been break-ups, new loves, and new career paths. We’ve reconnected with the folk music scene of our roots and the political activism that is intrinsically linked with it. All of these themes are in this record -- it’s an album about growing up, finding identity through loss, meaning in belief, and a return to our roots.
We want to give this album the life we think it deserves. With your help we plan to put the finishing touches on it. As the title states, ‘Today’s Not Yesterday;’ things have changed, there are fewer people buying music than ever, there’s hardly a record industry to speak of- at least not like it used it be, and we are no longer teenaged ingénues that pique corporate interest. Now we’re women with opinions and voices (albeit voices singing in harmony), writing and performing what we think are our best songs yet.
WHO WE ARE
We are Abigail and Lily Chapin, sisters in life and music.
We are singers, songwriters, producers/ arrangers, activists, and believers in the power of song and of harmony. We've been officially known as The Chapin Sisters for 11 years, touring all around the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe. We've sung back-ups on national late night shows, led protest songs in marches and civil disobediences, and performed at countless weddings and funerals. The Chapin Sisters is not just our band name, it's who we are.
We have released 3 critically acclaimed full-length albums since we started The Chapin Sisters eleven years ago.

KICKSTARTER REWARDS PREVIEW
In addition to all the new music, Abigail and Lily will be designing and hand-making a number of special rewards for our Kickstarter friends: a bandana, a t-shirt, and a tote bag. All will be hand-dyed, silk-screened, and made of soft 100% cotton.
And of course, there's always the cookie pack!
Risks and challenges
The risks on this project are low, but we learned last time that there's a potential for some delays if we get too busy to hand craft everything we say we will in a timely fashion. We try to be true to our word, however, and we also are really excited for all the arts and crafts in our future.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
