SCORE! Thank you all so much for helping me reach my minimum goal for the campaign. With still 4 days left, we have enough time to go for our stretch goal of having the book translated into Spanish, Portuguese, and French! So PLEASE keep the pledges coming! It would be amazing if kids all around the world could get to know Chance Striker and his gang.
Chance Striker: One in a Million
The Chance Striker book series encourages readers young and old to embrace what makes them unique, as they embark on a fun, light-hearted adventure with a one-of-a-kind hero.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to my Keyboard...
Back in February, a plucky twelve-year-old boy named Chance Striker kicked a soccer ball onto my desktop screen. His killer smile and fancy footwork charmed me instantly, and I knew I just had to take a chance and tell his story!
Welcome to the Neighborhood...
He walked me up the five flights of steps to his apartment on the Upper West Side, and introduced me to his wacky, yoga-obsessed mom (who seemed oddly familiar); his genius, older sister, who apparently had a chronic case of hiccups; and his sugar-crazed, not-so-genius twin brothers Zane and Zephyr (or Z-squared, as Chance calls them). I also met Chance's best friend Ronnie, who sported a business suit and brief case; and Andy, a spunky short-haired girl with a knack for all things awesome, including card tricks and reptile wrangling.
Getting "Drawn" into the Book..
If meeting these amazing characters was cool, then having Neil Kohney (The Other End) immortalize them in his clever cartoon drawings was just about the coolest thing ever! In fact, as one of the best Kickstarter rewards, Neil is excited to draw YOU into the book! How cool is that?
My Writing Process: Invisible Ink ...
Remember those invisible ink books you got as a kid at the five-and-dime? The ones whose gray outlines magically filled up with color once you ran a wet paint brush over them? My process in writing this book has been a lot like that. I write a few chapters at a time, then have Neil do up the drawings for those chapters, adding the "color" to the characters. Each time we get the drawings back ("we," meaning my 3 children and I), it feels like Christmas! Chance Striker's world is brought to life more and more with each piece of artwork-- making writing about it that much more exciting!
Why Kids Will think Chance is One in a Million..
Written with the RELUCTANT READER in mind (like my own 9-year-old son), these books are:
conversational in tone
- hilariously illustrated
What's in these books that Parents and Teachers will Love:
- important vocabulary words for grades 6-8 (Check out the beautiful flashcards in the teachers' and parents' resources on my website: http://www.chancestriker.com/)
- only proper grammar (No "Me and Ronnie went to the store..."-gasp!)
- characters from diverse racial and socio-economic backgrounds
- strong female and male role models who often challenge traditional gender categories
I am dedicated to making sure this book is the very best that can be afforded for a print run of 500 copies. I have personally taken on as many costs as possible, including half the artwork, the legal fees, and the marketing expenses so far. This leaves me still with the costs for the rest of the artwork, marketing, editing, formatting production, distribution, and rewards.
Here’s a breakdown in terms of percentages*:
*In addition to these costs, whatever funds exceed my Kickstarter goal will go toward translating the book into :
Thanks a Million
Thanks for reading all the way to the end of this page, and for caring about this 12-year-old New York City boy who has a unique story to tell-- as does every child. Helping fund this project is only the beginning of encouraging young people everywhere to celebrate their differences-- and have fun while they're doing it!
