About

CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #3
CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #3

Who am I?

I'd like to begin by thanking you for your time and interest. I am Chad Bilyeu, an American who has been residing in Amsterdam for ten years. I was born and raised in Cleveland, lived a decade in Washington, DC where I studied at Georgetown University, and moved to further my studies in Amsterdam in 2009. I’ve been living in the Dutch capital ever since. I write, make photos, travel, and engage in various other artistic endeavors. Since relocating to Amsterdam I have organized art shows, thrown various nightlife events, and become well acquainted with the lovely city which is Amsterdam. Most recently, I ran a cassette label known as Bullsh*t Night Records

I have been an avid reader of comic books my entire life. A few years ago, I decided to create a comic book based upon my life in Amsterdam. CHAD IN AMSTERDAM was conceived while reading fellow Cleveland-native Harvey Pekar's AMERICAN SPLENDOR. I realized that the most novel way to depict myself and the city of Amsterdam would be within a comic book.

For about the last year and a half I have been traveling through Europe, Canada and the USA to promote and distribute the first two issues of CHAD IN AMSTERDAM. My aim with CHAD IN AMSTERDAM is to delve into aspects of Amsterdam, and quotidian life, that are typically ignored by most travel and expat writers. With respect to accuracy and honesty, I write about my own misadventures in a city that I have had both the pleasure of learning about and contributing to. In addition, the comic continues the tradition of autobiographical comics such as Harvey Pekar’s AMERICAN SPLENDOR, Joe Matt’s PEEP SHOW, and Dennis Eichhorn’s REAL STUFF, albeit in my own particular way and voice.

From the strength of the first two issues I was able to participate in several comic-cons in 2018 & 2019. I got to meet my public at Stripdagen Haarlem, Massachusetts Independent Comic Expo (MICE), Short Run Comix & Arts Festival, EuZine Comics & Zine Fest, Genghis Con Cleveland, and Toronto Comics & Arts Festival (TCAF). The reception for the comic has been really great thus far, so it helped me gather the confidence to try out a Kickstarter campaign.

The new issue! CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #3

This campaign is for CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #3, my latest issue. I intentionally waited until the release of my third issue to initiate a Kickstarter campaign. I feel more confident presenting my third issue to the Kickstarter community because I have already successfully created, manufactured, and distributed the first two issues of CHAD IN AMSTERDAM. This third issue was easier to create than the previous two, as I've become more confident in writing, editing, and product design. Also, of utmost importance, the third issue is already manufactured. All backers can rest easy knowing that what they are supporting has already been made.

The comic book that I create has a full color cover with 28 pages containing black & white artwork. The physical comic is printed on heavy, pulp-free paper and manufactured in the Netherlands. All artists are compensated fairly for their work. I aim to create a sustainable comic book which doesn't exploit the environment, artists, or workers.

I sought out new talent this time around and was fortunate enough to work with some artists whose work has inspired me. The cover (pictured above) is drawn by Will Robson, a prolific artist who has done gorgeous work on DEADPOOL & SPIDER MAN, STAR-LORD, SPAWN, WEST COAST AVENGERS, and most recently, FUTURE FOUNDATION. Will was approachable and wonderfully brought my cover concept to life with Greg Menzie on color duty.

During a trip back to Cleveland I met living legend Gary Dumm, one of Harvey Pekar's most frequent collaborators on AMERICAN SPLENDOR. Gary is an incredibly cool fellow who I consider to be, not only a collaborator, but also a friend. Gary blessed me with some gorgeous art for a 11-page collaboration concerning Dutch herring, De Vier Visspecialisten.

"Chad Bilyeu is neither a narcissist (as some have erroneously claimed) nor a reporter. But I do believe that as a writer he’s definitely Harvey Pekar’s brother from a different mother."

The next artist I approached was a personal favorite from the 80s and 90s known for his work on GRENDEL, THE JAM, and DR. ROBOT, one of Canada's finest, Bernie Mireault. I contacted Bernie online and he was very eager to work with me. It was truly an honor to work with someone whose comics were so influential to me. We collaborated on a 10-page story of attraction in the club, The Dutch Inquisition, part 3.

"Chad Bilyeu reached out over Facebook and invited me to contribute to his autobiographic comic book, "Chad in Amsterdam". Seeing the first issue and finding it reminiscent of the American underground classic, Harvey Pekar's "American Splendor", I felt I could fit in and signed on for a 10 pager. Been a while since I've been published and it was nice to be asked to do something. Since then I've found Chad to be easy to work with, both as a writer and as a paymaster. Then he told me that another story in the same issue [#3] is to be illustrated by Gary Dumm, Harvey Pekar's primary artist on "American Splendor". I'm going to be in the same issue and that's very cool for me. Thanks, Chad!"

For the closing story of issue 3 I found an incredible local designer named Lorenzo Milito. Our collaboration is his first foray into comics, and I am already looking forward to working with him again. His art is a great contrast to the seasoned veterans which perfectly captures the ambiance of Amsterdam. Rōnin is a prose laden piece that details a denizen’s life in the Red Light District.

How the funds will be spent

Because I pay my artists fairly, my comic is a bit more expensive to produce than most independent comics. I received a grant for the first issue from Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst (AFK) and have been using profits from the sales of issues 1 and 2 to finance the creation of issue 3.

The proceeds from this campaign will go directly to the creation of issue 4. Because the artists I work with are paid, backers are not only supporting my comic, they are supporting the stellar artists who I work with. Issue 4 is slated for a November 2019 release. I am truly loving writing and creating these comics and I have no shortage of stories. Amsterdam is a vibrant place that creates an atmosphere where good stories blossom.

Issues #1 and #2

"Chad in Amsterdam #1 and #2 are both a blast to read. If you’re from Amsterdam, you’ll likely recognize some of the locations. If you’re not from Amsterdam, these are still fun adventures to read. Since most of the comic strips read more like sketches than full stories, these are great when you’re looking for some light reading or about ten to fifteen minutes of entertainment. This isn’t about superheroes, zombies, fantasy warriors or deep space travels—but it might just be one of the most honest and real books on stands at the moment."

CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #1 (art by Kim DeMåne)
CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #1 (art by Kim DeMåne)

In 2017 I decided to write up some scripts and get them illustrated by various artists, some of whom I actually knew, others of whom were located online. I found a batch of great artists to bring my scripts to life (Kim Demåne, Jared Boggess, Boyane Zelechowski, Bas Schippers, Denis Galocha, EKS Graphics, and Dotsy). Issue 1 was printed and released in May 2018 to critical acclaim.

Contents: Cuisine from Surinam. Bikes. Beer. Jenever. Red Light District. "Where are you from?" Old school Hip-Hop. All this & more in inaugural issue of Chad in Amsterdam. CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #1 is conceived, plotted, written, and produced by Chad Bilyeu. Presented with full-color front and rear covers housing 24 pages of lovely black and white artwork.

“Chad in Amsterdam #1 is a grabbing read of an American man’s life in Amsterdam. It’s relaxed, often funny, and pensive. It doesn’t lead the reader by the nose; you are free to make what you will of each story. The team of artists bring something visually interesting and unique to their sections. As such, I recommend checking this one out.”

CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #2 (art by Lera Ryazanceva)
CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #2 (art by Lera Ryazanceva)

For the second issue (released October 2018) I gathered a different array of artists (Lera Ryazanceva, Eyrc Why, EKS Graphics, Iris van der Heijden, DroL, and Pepijn Schermer) to illustrate my scripts. The second issue has also been well-received, particularly at festivals and in stores throughout Europe, Canada, and the USA.

Contents: Where, why, and how bikes get towed in Amsterdam. Inane tourists clash with witty prostitutes. Tupac Mike. Dutch students who do double duty as baristas and immigration officers; at the same time. A really, really green mosque. CHAD IN AMSTERDAM #2 is conceived, plotted, written, and produced by Chad Bilyeu. Presented with full-color front and rear covers housing 28 pages of lovely black and white artwork.

“I really, really liked his voice. It was clear. It was present. It was kind of purposeful. Not in that he went for the same thing in every story, but I found myself, after awhile, beginning to trust the writer. Not only for his writing, but also for his choice of artists. The artists were all excellent and they all added to the story in their visual style and representation, even though they are drawing him. He is identifiable as “him” even though the styles are completely different.”

Risks and challenges

Being that I have created two issues previously, I am capable of creating a high-quality final product. I can assuredly say that all issues are of a superlative quality, printed on pulp-free, heavy paper stock by a professional printer here in the Netherlands.

The toughest part will be mailing all of the issues, but that will merely be an issue of time. I will be certain to keep all backers up to speed concerning the shipping progress following the conclusion of the campaign.
