Space Explorers is a tableau building game for 2-4 players, ages 12+, and plays in about 20-40 mins. It is designed by Yuri Zhuravljov, best known for designing Viceroy, and is illustrated by Alexey Kot.  

Players are the head of their own Research and Development Hub in a Space Research Center. Your goal is to gather the best and brightest minds humanity has to offer, and complete large scale space projects. 

Space Explorers features 20 different historical spacecrafts, 10 American and 10 Soviet, covering satellites, manned spaceships, and orbital stations. A wide range of spacecrafts can be found in the game from the Golden Age of Astronautics including Sputnik and Apollo 11

As Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin said aboard the Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961, as he was positioned on the launchpad poised to be the first human in space..."Let's Go!"

There are 10 Project Tiles with 2 different projects on each side of the tile. You'll find 10 US and 10 Soviet spacecrafts to choose from, all based on actual historical projects like Sputnik, Voyager, and Apollo 11!

 The painted wood resource tokens and first player marker will be made by Meeple Source.  The wood tokens are 4mm thick. Both the tokens and play mat will NOT be included in the base game box nor will they be available for purchase in retail stores. 

Shuffle and deal 6 cards into the middle of the table along with a number of spacecraft project tokens equal to the number of players plus two. Each player receives one of each Resource token type, Hub divider, Reference card, and a Specialist card from the deck

 On your turn, you may perform one of the following two actions:

  1.  Take a Specialist card from the Center or draw deck
  2.  Recruit a Specialist from the Center or your hand into your Hub

To recruit a Specialist into your Hub, you must have enough Resources. The Resource cost can be found in the lower left corner of the card. Abilities of the Specialist are in the lower right. The Division in your Hub that the Specialist can be placed is located in the upper left corner

Resources to recruit a Specialist can be acquired by passing those tokens to the player on your left as well as returning a Specialist card from your hand to the Center (counts as two wild resources). Some of your recruited Specialists in your Hub can even count toward Resource requirements, depending on their specific abilities. 

After you’ve recruited a Specialist or taken one into your hand, you can check to see if you have the necessary Skills from your Hub Specialists to launch a spacecraft project. Check to see if the Skill requirements on the Project token total the number of the same Skills in your Hub. If so, you may launch that project by collecting the spacecraft token, only launching one even if you qualify for more than one on a single turn. 

When a player has recruited their 12th Specialist into their Hub or the last remaining project has been launched, the end game is triggered. Players will finish out the round so that every player has an equal number of turns. Project points and Specialist card points are tallied and the highest total is the winner!

Thematically, artistically, and mechanically it just checks off a lot of boxes for me. The game is very easy to teach and easy to learn. It’s a handsome, very clever game and it’s definitely got my seal of approval.

This custom embroidered mission patch will be made by the same company who has been making the NASA mission patches for 50 years! It will be 4 inches high and wide which is the same size created for NASA astronauts. They even designed the patch! Since we met our mission objective my funding the game during the first 48 hours, EVERY backer who joins the campaign will receive the mission patch

The designer of Space Explorers, Yuri Zhuravlev, has created a solo variant ruleset. We will print a separate rulebook for the solo rules as well as a cardboard mat that players will need as a tracker during solo play. These will not be included in the retail game box, so this is a stretch goal for backers of the project only. They will be available later to PNP and any extra overrun copies will be available to purchase from us directly at conventions or our website. Both the $30k and $35k stretch goal will add new promo spacecraft projects to the game. Yuri is putting the final tweaks on the resources and victory points to make sure they are balanced. These four spacecraft projects will not be available inside the retail box. They will be shipped separately to backers of the KS campaign. We will also have the overrun copies available for purchase after the campaign directly from us at conventions and through our website.

This stretch goal will unlock once the total number of backers who pledge for the Deluxe edition of the game reaches 500. It will increase the size of the play mat from 12x18 inches to 14x24 inches. Along with the increase in play mat footprint, we will also be adding a sewn edge around the mat. This will help keep the mat flat during gameplay and provide a much sturdier feel that will hold up better over time. Once unlocked, it will automatically be added to the deluxe pledge tier instead of the 12x18 inch mat AND will be available as an add-on purchase in the pledge manager after the campaign. 

We are subsidizing some of the shipping cost to get the game in your mailbox with as little out of pocket expense to you as possible. For US shipments, the charge will be $5 for the regular pledge level and $10 for the deluxe. The rest of the world will be $10 on the regular tier and $15 for the deluxe. 

The plan is to ship all of the games from fulfillment centers in the US, Canada, and the EU. This should help backers in those countries avoid VAT. Please keep in mind every country is different. If this could be a concern for your situation, investigate the policies for your country.

Risks and challenges

This will be our fifth product to manufacture and fulfill to backers. We have run three successful campaigns here on KS and one on Indiegogo.
We have already established contractual relationships with our manufacturers (both game and additional items), fulfillment partner, and pledge manager. This will help us to hit the ground running immediately after the campaign ends.
All campaigns are unique and will present their own challenges along the way. We vow to handle them quickly and with the best interest of our supporters in mind.

The game was originally published in Russian and will be available soon in both French and Polish.
