A lot of these types of games involve team work, but among the group is a player whose job it is to stop the others from accomplishing their objective. All players start the game knowing someone is "it", they just don't know who.
There are also games that acquire a player to become "it" during a game changing their objective mid game.
Then there are the games that act as co-op, but at the end your objective is to win...not as a group but as a player, whether you are "it" or not.
THIS game starts with all players working together as humans. There is NEVER a player who could be the Thing. Players work together because when one human wins...they all win. However, as the game moves forward, the odds of a player becoming the THING begin to grow. The more chances a player takes, the more he could become infected. By the end, everyone wants to believe they are who they started as...but vulnerability is man's concern.
The THING has the same objective as everyone else. Man must survive the cold weather as well as camp events, long enough to make it to the chopper. The THING must do the same.
Its objective is to blend in and get on the helicopter with at least one human. He can spread his infection by passing items to other players. He can also spread through sleep rounds. If this doesn't work, it also has the option to expose its infection by attacking other players.
Just like the humans, when one THING wins, they all win. But if the THING over-infects, there will be no human left to get on the chopper with and his objective is lost.
I mean, we cant stop you from playing it that way, it's just that it's not designed for anything over 6. You would mos likely run out of materials, food, weapon tiles and most of all...trust. But hey, if you want to engage in an 8 player cluster that will most likely last you 17.5 hours. Go for it!
Jesse decided to answer this one in the comments:
I am truly sorry if its a deal breaker by not having a female character but I wont be adding any. When working on Ash to Bone (which y'all are going to totally dig) I got the same smack because the two main characters were both female.
Look, you're talking to someone who gets crap all the time for ALWAYS choosing female characters when I play ANY games BUT in this case, I like the story's built tension of the lab being overrun with big burly men in a paranoid outpost...so by gosh golly....that's how I created this game.
Also...I happen to find Van Wall VERY sexy!
There will only be 6 infection clickers in the 8 character game because this is a 3-6 player game. If you were to buy the two expansion packs, it is true you would get the two additional clickers, but the price point is unfortunately $10 more as well. All the clickers will be identical in color due to our need for economies of scale and being able to afford them. Therefore, they will not be character color specific at this time.
