Deadcert is a game that pulls on your detective reasoning, with character judgements and sneaky play tactics required to discover the murderer and ensure you are the one holding the incriminating evidence at the end. There are 37 suspects to sieve through with motives, means or opportunity but only one has all 3. Using deductive & abductive reasoning you need to identify the prime suspects & perhaps even snoop on evidence your colleagues are holding.
The characters & storylines are fictional but realistic, set against real London locations and events in 2015. So if you love identifying the culprit before the detectives on your favourite TV crime drama do (I know, it feels great!) or before the final chapter in that thriller you’re enjoying, this game is for you - just as much as it is for those who simply enjoy card games.
This is your chance to take part in a new form of card game / crime drama - that I call, a Card Drama - where you can help turn it into a reality and be justly rewarded for your valued support!
If you recall seeing our campaign earlier this summer, I highly recommend that you scroll down and read the, Making of, section and discover how I've spent my summer...
The first step is to create a Murder Episode, that is to select a Victim, Crime Scene & Time of Death that describe the murder mystery to be solved.
Each of the 3 detail cards selected have 16 corresponding suspect cards that detail the those with motive means and opportunity to carry out the murder, plus a couple of Snoop cards to stir up the game play a little. The 54 cards are then shuffled together to form the cards in play.
There are 3 different play formats, catering for the novice, experienced and solitary detective.
In all the play formats, judging which suspects are the most credible is a key part of the game. For example...
- If a suspect had a motive would they be likely to have carried out the murder in that way, and is the date of the crime significant to them in some way?
- If a suspect had the means are they likely to be connected with the victim in some way?
- If a suspect has the opportunity does the crime appear to fit their character?
The more you play the game, the more you learn about the characters and the better your judgements should become - but that doesn’t mean you will naturally win the game. Having the cards that identify the killer are how you win, and good fortune and the ability for cards to change hands by playing Snoops means that the most seasoned detective can be out smarted by a rookie!
If you wish to fully review the 3 play formats available, the following link will open up a PDF version of the official “How to be a Deadcert Detective” guide.
Investigation in Progress
To give you a brief insight into the game, I dropped in on some family with a prototype set of the game and invited them to play the Openplay format of the game while I hovered over their shoulders filming them from my phone. Amazingly, they agreed! So, below is a short 3 1/2 minute video of the game in action.
Please note that all 6 players are Rookies and meet the 12+ years advisory age limit (Peppa Pig is not playing the game), and that the cards are home printed prototypes (so no rounded corners - imagine doing that by hand!?)
Under the Magnifying Glass - Openplay
This video provides a walk through of the Openplay format, with references to the Detective Guide, added graphics and commentary of key moments.
...The next, Under the Magnifying Glass video will demonstrate the Soloplay format - COMING SOON!
The Game Set box measures 225mm x 160mm x 90mm (8.9” x 6.3” x 3.5”) and is a sturdy design with a slide out tray - not dissimilar in look and size to a DVD box set. It is equally at home stored in an upright position as well as laying flat.
Compartments within the tray hold 5 Evidence Packs (labelled A to E) each containing 60 cards. Below is a glimpse of the 3 detail cards that accompany each pack and a brief taste of some of the stories that lie behind them in their associated Suspect cards...
A compartment also holds 25 resealable bags so that the packs can each be separated into 3 Evidence Packets each containing 20 cards.
The reason for the extra bags - and 4 spare compartments within the tray - is to provide storage for the 4 optional Evidence Expansion Packs - available as free extras via the stretch goals!
The standard 5 packs, enable 5x5x5 = 125 murder episodes to be created. Add just one more pack and you jump to 6x6x6 = 216 possible episodes. Add all 3 expansion packs and you reach the dizzy total of 8x8x8 = 512 murders to solve!
We have chosen to provide accurate shipping costs for you after the project closes, rather than ask for a best guess price that may well turn out to be too high if the project goes well. We will calculate the costs for each individual country - as identified as your country of origin in Kickstarter so that we can obtain the best prices possible. Therefore, if you wish for your reward to be sent to a different country, please message me and let me know.
With the highest valued reward only being £50, we can provide friendly shipping - i.e. no extra import taxes for those in the EU, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Many other countries are likely to be friendly recipients as well.
The Stretch Goals in this project are where your rewards can really grow - and when I say grow, I’m talking about increasing the number of cards by up to 175% which in turn increases the number of murder episodes possible by nearly 400%!
Not only do the goals provide ever expanding rewards, we have also made them tantalisingly within close reach! With just steps of £2,250 between the goals, by getting your friends and family to join in, making their own pledges and spreading the word these goals will be reached!
PLEASE NOTE: Stretch Goal #1 has been discontinued as Evidence Pack E is now to be included within the Game Set!
So please do your best and unlock these gifts. Each time one is unlocked I will reveal details of the extra Victim, Crime Scene and Time of Death that you have to play with!
This game was born from a vision I had back in 2005, to create a realistic murder mystery card game with multiple murder scenarios.
It took me 9 years to eventually come up with a game structure that would deliver the desired result, followed by a few months to write the interlinked murderous storylines and few more to test, modify and hone the game play. In June of this year we launched an ambitious Kickstarter Project which offered a variety of reward options and was to be produced in the UK. But the choices offered and the local production costs meant that the project target needed to be £77K! I had seen other games surpass such totals but in hindsight, their original goals were much lower.
So, disheartened - but oddly enough even more determined - I went away to lick my wounds and build a new project that would enable the game to finally be realised. It also provided more time for even more testing which has resulted in a 3rd play format and time to perfec the game's content further still.
There are now 3 separate Summary Cards in each pack to cover all the play formats now available...
Not only has the testing ensured that we have developed a balanced game, we have also honed the design of the cards to ensure they are the best they can be...
We now have a project target that has tumbled down to just £6K, and exciting truly valuable stretch goals that are well within reach - just £2,250 apart! If all stretch goals are reached - at just £15K - the number of murder mysteries in the box swell to 800% of the original content!
Yes, it’s been a long, and sometimes near brutal road to follow, but every step will be worth it when Deadcert - the world’s first Card Drama - becomes a reality, with your help and support.
The character images used for the 8 Victims are taken from Lui Ferreyra’s 1000 Faces Project. For further information about this exciting artist who is based in Colorado, USA, and further examples of his amazing work, please visit www.luiferreyra.com
The music used in both the videos was taken from the soundtrack of "Nameless: The Hackers RPG", a new iOS RPG by BoxCat Game - so many thanks to them also.
Kickstarter provides the best opportunity for creative and innovative projects to reach fruition. Deadcert is not only just a new game, it blends card games with murder mystery crime drama in a fresh and realistic way that has never been achieved before. It’s innovative and yet simple structure can be the basis for so many other card games - not just murder mysteries...
The spectacular stretch goals we have to thank you all for your support are just great to have waiting in the wings for you. So I hope you manage to hit that all important green button to back us and then share your vision with everyone you know!
Many thanks, David
Risks and challenges
The fact that the product is essentially a card game - although including up to 480 cards - the production methods and quality controls are well established.
Although the manufacturer is based in China, Wingo specialise in games & toys and have already been behind previous successful Kickstarter campaigns, so we are hardly treading on fresh ground.
Our biggest threat to the timeline is probably the weather and how it could effect the transit, but I would keep you all up to date of progress by weekly emails. The February date already has some flexibility in it so I am confident you will have the cards in you hands before March is upon us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
