Carl Otto Czeschka’s bold lines and whiplash style are some of the most recognizable inspirations for the psychedelic rock poster movement of the Haight-Ashbury era.
His work has been generally unpublished since the early 1900s: help us make a boutique book collecting his illustrations!
Carl Otto Czeschka is recognized by art historians as a pivotal presence in the development of art in the 20th century; he started his career at the beginning of the Art Nouveau movement in Austria and quickly became one of its most celebrated illustrators. By 1908, he had moved with his peers Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser into a style that heralded the coming of Art Deco. His designs are celebrated and presented in major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Neue Galerie, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and virtually every major museum worldwide.
While Czeschka's Modernist work (post-1908) for the Wiener Werkstatte is well-documented in books today, his earlier Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil, as it was called in Germany and Austria) line art is largely unavailable except in period materials.
Make no mistake: this is not your traditional Art Nouveau: this beautiful art is dark, strange, and weird.
Even the flowery artworks of Czeschka have a weight to them that transcends the simply botanical into bold, dramatic Symbolism.
For nearly twenty years Century Guild has exhibited rare artworks in venues as varied as L.A. Art, The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair, and San Diego Comic Con. Works previously in the Century Guild collection have been displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Detroit Institute of Art, and LACMA.
While the internet is a magnificent repository of data, we still love the idea of curling up with books! And many–if not most–of the images that will be in this book are not available on the internet at all... see them here in a fantastic resolution that allows you to see the magnificent details of the artwork! These artworks are all in our possession, have been professionally photographed and color corrected, and as a result will be printed for you to experience at the highest resolution possible.
Help us in our mission to preserve, share, and celebrate these rare and historically important artworks.
When we make an effort to preserve rare posters by very famous artists or the artwork of something as legendary among horror fans as Der Orchideengarten, we can expect a solid audience for the book - but when we dig deeper into our archives and pull out something that is greatly significant but incredibly obscure, it's hard to know what kind of reception it will get! This project is where YOU decide if we should make a book collecting the early work of this artist!
How you can help.
If you love the work you see here, if you are an artist yourself and think that this work will inspire and fuel your own work, or if you love art history and want these illustrations to be preserved: please pre-order a book and ask your art-loving friends to do the same! Because this campaign has a very special stretch goal:
If we hit $21,500, ALL copies of the book will be printed 30% larger, and bound in HARDCOVER with cloth wrapping and gold foil stamping.
We love making small paperback books- they're easy to stick in a backpack or read on a plane. But we really love making books that feel like keepsake volumes, and with this book we hope to bridge the gap between our expensive hardcovers and our affordable paperbacks: if enough people preorder this book, then everyone on Kickstarter gets a beautiful hardcover for a paperback price. (See the example graphic at the bottom of page!)

Century Guild is an institution founded by Thomas Negovan in 1999. Located in Los Angeles, Century Guild has presented Art Nouveau and Symbolist Art in their Chicago and Los Angeles galleries, as well as numerous International Art and Antiques Fairs across the last two decades. 2016 saw the gallery shift to an educational and creative content format with The Century Guild Museum of Art and Century Guild Creative. The limited edition books published by Century Guild are desirable for their academic content, fine quality, and collectability; many out of print volumes are commanding high prices on Amazon and eBay. We are strong believers in and supporters of the crowdfunding community and the way that it encourages creations of exceptional quality by making a direct connection between the creator and collector. Thank you for your support in this important academic endeavor by helping us to create a gorgeous keepsake book!
