A SPECIAL FOUR-DAY MAKE 100 CAMPAIGN to publish high resolution limited edition prints directly from two shocking and rare original posters for Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol!

Note: POSTERS SHIP IMMEDIATELY AT THE CLOSE OF THE CAMPAIGN TO REACH YOU BEFORE HALLOWEEN!

Century Guild began collecting these macabre artworks at our opening in 1999, and in 2010 we hosted our first public exhibition of original Grand-Guignol posters.  Since that time, we've devoted a large part of our research to celebrating the legendary theater of terror.

This project will reproduce the shocking and macabre imagery of two rare and iconic Grand-Guignol posters in fine, large-format extremely limited edition museum prints. The original posters are in our possession, were photographed at high resolution, and then printed on a heavy cardstock to create the highest quality limited edition facsimiles.

TWO RARE, ORIGINAL GRAND-GUIGNOL POSTERS

1. LA SORCIÈRE (The Witch)

2. L'HOMME QUI A TUÉ LA MORT (The Man Who Killed Death)

  • Each print edition is limited to 100
  • Created from high resolution images captured from the original posters in The Century Guild Museum of Art archive
  •  16.25" x 24" on heavy cardstock
  • Blindstamped with the Century Guild seal

Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol, popularly known as "The Grand Guignol," was a small theatre in the Pigalle area of Paris that inhabited a former chapel.  From its opening in 1897 until its closing in 1962, it introduced the idea of shock theater, creating the most horrific performances of terror, a brief respite of comedic relief, then quickly returning to unbridled terror.  The plays explored violence and madness, and the grotesque special effects would frequently be TOO realistic: it was not uncommon for audience members to faint during performances.  Contemporary artists known for sophisticated and intelligent shocking of their audiences (including Marilyn Manson, Alice Cooper, Clive Barker, and Tim Burton) mention the legend and reputation of The Grand Guignol as a major influence on their work.

1. LA SORCIÈRE (The Witch)

La Sorcière was presented by Eddy Ghilain in 1961 while the theater was under direction of Christiane Weigant; this occult-themed play was one of the last presented before the theater closed its doors forever. In this poster, a witch is crucified by daggers and burned at the stake while the entwining smoke suggests mystery by forming a billowing question mark.

2. L'HOMME QUI A TUÉ LA MORT (The Man Who Killed Death)

L'homme qui a tué la mort featured "the most assassinated woman in the world"–certainly in the history of any performance medium–the voluptuous actress Paula Maxa, who by her count was murdered over 10,000 times on the small stage.  Written in 1928 by René Berton, the play was presented during the era when the theater was in its heyday.  The poster features a macabre image of the scientifically reanimated head of a guillotine victim.

2010 exhibition catalogs and silkscreen posters by Malleus.

Our Grand-Guignol exhibitions featured silkscreen posters created by the Italian artists Malleus Rock Art Lab; their artwork titled "Hurt" also graced the cover of our 2010 exhibition catalog.  Poster #1 was hand-screened in a signed and numbered edition of 180.

The 8.5" x 11" exhibition catalog features artworks by Gustav Klimt, Gail Potocki, Chris Mars, and a wealth of rare and macabre artworks from 1870-1970.

Our third Grand-Guignol exhibition was titled Thanatos and featured rare historical artworks from the theater alongside artworks by Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha, and a number of contemporary artists. Poster #3 was hand-screened in a signed and numbered edition of 138.

We are offering these catalogs and silkscreen posters as add-ons here at a special discount price!  All three Malleus posters pictured are 22" x 28".

Poster #4 is the official Director's Cut poster for Clive Barker's Nightbreed created for the premiere at the Crest Theater in Hollywood in 2014, and was hand-screened in a signed and numbered edition of 139.

Very limited quantities remain on these offerings.

About Us.

Century Guild is a Los Angeles gallery, museum, and publisher founded by Thomas Negovan in 1999. Century Guild has presented Art Nouveau and Symbolism in numerous International Art and Antiques Fairs, including a major presence at the center of San Diego Comic Con where for the past fourteen years they introduced important artists of the 19th century to a new generation of art lovers. The limited edition books and prints published by Century Guild are desirable for their academic content, fine quality, and rarity- books issued at $75 as recently as a year ago can be found on Amazon today for upwards of $600. We are strong believers in and supporters of the crowdfunding community and the way that it encourages creations of exceptional quality by making a direct connection between the creator and collector. Thank you for sharing our excitement for rare and unique artworks from the early 20th century!
