SPECIAL TWO WEEK KICKSTARTER! Please help spread the word!
(Please note that all stretch goals apply to pledges $33 and above)
Eldritch Bloom is the third and final book documenting the entirety of the artworks from the first year (1919) of Der Orchideengarten.
Der Orchideengarten (The Orchid Garden) was a German publication bearing the honor of being the first periodical of fantastic horror, preceding the famous American Weird Tales magazine by four years.
Published immediately after the First World War when German art was at its height of decadence and debauchery, the magazine included copious illustrations of themes ranging from suspense and terror to crime and the eerily-erotic.
The stories were written by the European counterparts of H. P. Lovecraft and Arthur Machen, and the artworks were by artists both well-known and painfully obscure: Heinrich Kley, for example, was Disney's inspiration for imagery such as Night on Bald Mountain in his film Fantasia, and is one of the artists well-represented in the magazine. The stories have been reprinted and translated over the past century, but the artworks remain undiscovered treasures– until now.
The third book in the series is 5.5" x 8.5", paperback, 80 pages plus cover; with over 60 illustrations, this volume contains every artwork from issues 13-18 of the 1919 issues.
This campaign is for ELDRITCH BLOOM... and if you missed the first two, there are special pledge levels for you to get ALL THREE books collecting the COMPLETE 1919 DER ORCHIDEENGARTEN artworks!
Why we need your help.
For nearly 20 years, Century Guild has devoted itself to building and presenting an archive of important artworks that define the origins of popular culture. We've prepared the materials, and by preordering a copy and spreading the word, you can help us make a documentation of this very rare and very obscure magazine come to life. Der Orchideengarten gets mentioned frequently in books, at fantasy conventions, and at certain full-moon cauldron gatherings–but the same low-resolution images get shared over and over again. This book is an opportunity to explore the 1919 artworks in depth, with high resolution scans made from a pristine collection.
"Why books? Everyone else is going digital!"
We are book people. We love tactile experiences. In a hyper-stimulating digital era, we believe that there's nothing more important than curling up beneath a lamp with a cup of tea and exploring new worlds by thoughtfully turning the pages of a well-crafted book. Call us archaic or romantic, but it's an experience that we want to help perpetuate. We hope that you will help us make this happen!
About the artworks.
After the First World War, the Weimar Republic was formed, and for a short time censorship was lifted in Germany, after which the floodgates opened to release the greatest creative period of the 20th century in the realms of silent cinema, theater and cabaret, and visual arts. If you are a fan of the strange and sinister, THE ORCHID GARDEN is pure Weimar-era gold.

We really need your help to spread the word about this book! The success of small publishing projects is dependent on word of mouth, and these days social media is so flooded with ads and information that people are (understandably) tuning out. If you know someone else who is a fan of obscure, occult, bizarre, and mystical artworks, please send them a link to the project so they can check out the campaign and help us preserve the legacy of this incredibly important magazine! Your help promoting this project makes ALL the difference in the world - working together we can ensure this important part of history is documented and preserved!
Everyone is overloaded on social media, so we are asking you to help us by sending personal emails to the book lovers in your life... and as a thank-you, we have come up with some incredibly cool stretch goals!
Please note that the stretch goal achievements are cumulative, so if we hit $30,000 then we have unlocked ALL of the bonuses!
Century Guild is an institution founded by Thomas Negovan in 1999. Century Guild has presented Art Nouveau and Symbolist Art in their Chicago (1999-2013) and Los Angeles (2012-2018) galleries, as well as numerous International Art and Antiques Fairs across the last two decades, and for fourteen years were a major presence at San Diego Comic Con International. Works previously in the Century Guild collection are on permanent display in numerous institutions including The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Detroit Institute of Art. The limited edition books published by Century Guild are desirable for their academic content, fine quality, and collectability; many out of print volumes are commanding high prices on Amazon and eBay. We are strong believers in and supporters of the crowdfunding community and the way that it encourages creations of exceptional quality by making a direct connection between the creator and collector. Thank you for your support in this important academic endeavor by helping us to create a gorgeous keepsake book.
