AURORA MOVIE SOUNDTRACK: VINYL + WAX CYLINDER
We made a really special movie- and with your help, for Kickstarter's Exquisite Objects initiative we are releasing a decadently-packaged vinyl soundtrack... and a special song on the beautifully obsolete 19th century medium of wax cylinder!
There is absolutely nothing cooler than having a really wonderful (or crazy?) idea, and spending time to nurture it until it's ready to come into the world. In this case it's that I have a passion for strange old vinyl and the odd and creepy merchandise that would have been made to promote old horror movies. But then what do you do with it? All too often the really special and weird ideas- the ones that you find yourself excited about decades later- are the ones that are the least financially wise... like releasing a song on a recording medium that's been obsolete for a century. But since the soundtrack is for a time-travel movie that takes place in 1897, a 19th century object makes perfectly peculiar sense! The Kickstarter community allows these kind of strange, beautifully crafted objects to find a path into existence.
The design of these exquisite objects celebrate the two eras celebrated in the movie: 1957, when we imagined the film being made, and 1897, the year in which the story takes place.
In November of 2017, the retro Horror/Sci-Fi short film AURORA was funded on Kickstarter.
Richard Metzger of the website Dangerous Minds summed everything up by saying: "Aurora features great art direction and a unique vision–it's as if Alejandro Jodorowky had directed an episode of The Twilight Zone."
The movie blends the experience of old television shows like The Twilight Zone and the Universal Monsters films with the gorgeous art direction of film noir and German Expressionism. AURORA tells the "true story" of what happened in 1897 at the first documented UFO crash in American history... featuring a Nazi time-traveler in the Old West, and an 1897 encounter with a terrible beast from another world: voiced in the film by legendary musician and artist Genesis P-Orridge.
Genesis spoke fragments of violent poetry and venomous sorrow which were transferred to tape and then chopped and reassembled using the magickal cut-up technique of sound performer Brion Gysin and postmodern author William Burroughs.
The film's soundtrack was elegantly crafted by Troy Sterling Nies (whose work for the H. P. Lovecraft Society is equal parts terrifying and heartbreakingly beautiful) and featured contributions from Joe Cassidy (of the Belfast-founded band Butterfly Child and Shepard Fairey's L.A. art project NØISE), drummer and percussionist Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls, Nine Inch Nails, Scarlet Sails), and the dynamic sonics of master thereminist Armen Ra.
For Kickstarter's Exquisite Objects initiative we are releasing the soundtrack on decadently-packaged, glow-in-the-dark vinyl!
The AURORA movie soundtrack features nine songs with orchestrations and archaic instruments by Troy Sterling Nies, with producer Joe Cassidy, drummer Brian Viglione, cellist Andrew Dalziell, and thereminist Armen Ra, and one magnificent and strange track with Genesis P-Orridge: "Last Testament of the Creature".
The LP comes in 1950s-style retro vinyl packaging: vintage cardboard jacket with era-authentic pasted-on color artwork of a tintype photo of the film's creature, a silkscreened back cover... and three GLOW IN THE DARK Sci-Fi color variants.
All three vinyl options glow in the dark... the Martian vinyl (limited to 100 copies) has a light red glow, the Nebula vinyl (limited to 100 copies) has a medium glow... and the Radioactive vinyl (limited to 23 copies) glows bright green!
Please note these may not be the final colors or patterns of the vinyl records, and that the blending process creates unpredictable and inconsistent results. Just like interdimensional travel.
The cover photo of the Creature is a tintype taken on the film set by Anton Orlov using a 19th century camera and an arsenal of dangerous chemicals, faithfully recreated for the album cover using a four-color process. In keeping with the late 19th century-meets-the-1950s aesthetic of the film, the photos will be hand-pasted onto the record jacket and the back cover will be hand-silkscreened.
For multi-vinyl packages, just add the amount of the single item and combine shipping!
Since the movie takes place in 1897, we also are creating a special piece of music offered on the first medium in recorded music history: A GLOW-IN-THE-DARK WAX CYLINDER featuring Genesis P-Orridge as The Creature. This strange and beautiful song exists on no other medium than this wax cylinder.
Wax cylinders are the first medium upon which music was released to the public and were popular from the late 19th century through the 1920s. While wax cylinders made up the entire recording industry in the early 20th century, the manufacture of cylinders is a lost art, and only a very few people on the planet maintain the technology to mold them. A terribly painstaking process, in the 21st century each one must be hand-cast and as a result it takes many days to create a single cylinder. The wax cylinder that you will receive is a hard plastic that glows in the dark with the song title impressed into the top rim, and comes in a period-authentic cardboard case. Your glow-in-the-dark wax cylinder will be a conversation-starting artifact for your bookshelf, and if you happen to live an anachronistic lifestyle, will play on any Edison Phonograph in your home.
Add the wax cylinder to any record package for $79!
Other cylinders available as add-ons following the campaign illustrate the wax cylinder format:

Century Guild is a Los Angeles gallery, museum, and publisher founded by Thomas Negovan in 1999. Century Guild has presented Art Nouveau and Symbolism in numerous International Art and Antiques Fairs, including a major presence at the center of San Diego Comic Con where for the past fourteen years they introduced important artists of the 19th century to a new generation of art lovers. The limited edition books and prints published by Century Guild are desirable for their academic content, fine quality, and rarity- books issued at $75 as recently as a year ago can be found on Amazon today for upwards of $600. We are strong believers in and supporters of the crowdfunding community and the way that it encourages creations of exceptional quality by making a direct connection between the creator and collector. Thank you for sharing our excitement for rare and unique artworks from the early 20th century!
