What is Jilia?
Jilia is a cloud-based platform and API framework that empowers developers to imagine, build, and expand the Internet of Things with a single, simple API framework. It's the easiest way to get started exploring and developing the Internet of Things. It's also the perfect platform to build new IoT products and Jilia has the scalability to support millions of users and devices.
What is the Jilia IoT Dev Kit?
The Jilia IoT Development Kit includes an add-on board that adds comprehensive IoT capabilities to your Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black. The Jilia IoT Development Kit includes on-board ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi* (BeagleBone only) so you can connect to hundreds of existing devices.
The add-on boards allow developers to build new IoT systems utilizing the new Jilia API. Jilia is a feature-rich, easy-to-use, and scalable dream-come-true for developers who create products and services for the Internet of Things.
As featured on:
Kipp Bradford, tech innovator and developer says, “CentraLite is developing a tool that makes it possible for small groups of designers to go from idea to implementation very quickly...I’m excited to see what Jilia has to offer.”
What's on it?
What all do I get?
The base Jilia IoT Developer's Kit will include:
- Dev Kit Quickstart Guide
- Jilia Pi or Jilia Bone Add-On Card(your choice)
- "Start-up" cloud account
What else can it do?
Philips Hue, August Lock, and IFTTTJilia makes other products easier to develop for! By integrating APIs like Philips Hue, August Lock, and IFTTT into Jilia, you can use the simplified approach that Jilia offers.
The Jilia Dev Kit doesn't just poll devices. Jilia can "subscribe" to a device, receiving a constant stream as they report changes, triggers, actions, and statuses.
How can it help me?
Jilia makes developers’ jobs easier and speeds up product development. With the Jilia IoT Dev Kit, projects require fewer developers, less experience, and less overhead. Jilia can shorten your project time by as much as 80%! Projects that normally take 18 months to develop can utilize Jilia to finish the project in as little as 3 months. Jilia's flexibility also makes it easy to integrate into existing products and services.
What's so "easy" about Jilia?
Jilia allows developers to focus on a single development approach, regardless of the protocol used (e.g., Z-Wave, ZigBee, and Bluetooth). To the developer, Jilia treats all of these protocols the same. You don't have to know these standards to use them! Jilia's cloud eliminates the need for custom server software, infrastructure, or dedicated IT teams.
App, hardware, and software teams will all use the same APi to interact with Jilia. This can eliminate rework and provides a shorter learning curve .
Jilia doesn't require any experience with IoT protocols or RF!
Who can use it?
Jilia can be used by beginners and experts! There are only a few hundred software developers worldwide that have enough real-world experience in ZigBee, Z-Wave, or Bluetooth to get a comprehensive IoT project launched from the ground up. For most companies (especially startups), finding and hiring these developers is not an option. Jilia will make your project so easy that nearly any developer can pull off complex projects.
Jilia doesn't require developers to learn a new language!
Teams can develop complex solutions with the Jilia API with nearly any programming language available.
With an estimated 20 million software, web, and app developers worldwide, Jilia expands the pool of talent from a few hundred experts to 20 million developers from a wide range of backgrounds.
The Jilia IoT Dev Kit is perfect for:
- Developers without low-level code or hardware experience.
- Seasoned experts who just want a faster and cheaper way to develop IoT products and services.
- App developers wanting to control an ecosystem of devices.
- Web developers without hardware or embedded experience.
Supported Programming Languages
If we want Jilia to be the "language of things" then it only makes sense that we make it compatible with nearly every common programming language out there. Since Jilia uses an API, there are few limitations to how you include it in your code.
Your Jilia IoT Developer Kit will come with lifetime service to the Jilia cloud. The developer portal will be your guide and resource for getting started, testing, and mastering "things". Here's a few features the dev portal will offer:
- Code generators for the most common languages
- Real-time Testing Console
- Code libraries for the common programming languages (making Jilia even easier).
- Getting Started Guides & Tutorials
- Extensive API Documentation
Is it "too simple"?
While the dev kit is simple, it's certainly not "too simple!" The Jilia Dev Kit is perfect for experts and developers who want to work at a lower level using the extensive API developer's documentation.
How's the project going?
We've recently received rev 2 samples of the Jilia Pi and Jilia Bone boards. Our next step is rigorously testing the firmware (in development) against the new hardware. We have something special planned for our final/rev3 boards that will make it stand out even more! Final hardware and firmware is scheduled for late-August or early-September. Production will begin in September with IoT Developer's Kits shipping in mid-to-late October.
The Jilia API and cloud have been under development for nearly a year. Progress has been steady and on schedule. The majority of the API and commands have been established and the main focus is now on completing the developer portal and code libraries for multiple languages. The Jilia API and cloud is already undergoing alpha testing with a few of our partners. An initial release candidate is scheduled for August with the full release coming in October.
Risks and challenges
CentraLite, the company powering the Jilia platform, has been developing and manufacturing home automation products for 18 years. After developing over 30 wireless IoT devices, the CentraLite and Jilia team have a vast knowledge base and a wealth of experience in PCB design, firmware, and cloud-services development.
CentraLite has on-site production facilities as well as relationships with some of the largest contract manufacturers in the world.
Manufacturing & Supply Chain Risks:
Manufacturing risks are very low as the device is a PCB that utilizes many of the microprocessors and radios that we have used in other products. While unforeseen revisions to PCB design can impact the launch date, all manufacturing related risks are very low as we’ve produced products for nearly 20 years. We have a world-class hardware team and they have successfully launched dozens of IoT products over the past several years.
Software and Feature Risks:
The goal of the project is to release the product and features on schedule. And while the Jilia API has been in development for nearly a year, delays for certain features are a possibility. The dates and schedules provided are our honest projections based on our experience and the work that is remaining. We will be transparent and communicate with our backers as any problems arise that will delay shipments or feature additions.
