(Check out new Stretch Goals Below)
Are you driving around with one hand on the wheel?
The CelGo was developed to solve that problem. I used to be one of those people, holding my cell phone down low and driving my car with one hand. I had looked everywhere for a decent cell phone holding device for the car but they all had problems. Either they had to be mounted on your windshield right in front of your driving vision or somehow clipped to your vent or even worse, down in your cup holder.
Why couldn't there be a way to hold your phone near your gauges and out of the way of your driving vision. Now there is, with CelGo!
FINALLY... A quality cell phone holder for your car!
KRIS, one of our first backers, wrote in wanting to see how stable the CelGo was in a moving car "stop n go". Since there's a flex arm, how does that effect stability? Well, it actually makes the CelGo even more stable. We decided to really show you and do some really hard turns!
Can we really make the CelGo in the United States?
In a word, YES!
The US still has the best engineering and manufacturing facilities in the world. Truthfully, the reason almost every cell phone accessory on the market is made in China is primarily due to cost. Retailers require huge margins on accessories which has pushed much of US manufacturing offshore. Two years ago we were told that we couldn't manufacture our desktop stand, the CelJel, here in the US but we did anyway. Granted, there is less profit per unit sold but the manufacturing quality is top notch and the delivery is always right on time!
How CelGo Started
I tend to be in my car quite a bit. Whether it's for client meetings, family errands or short weekend getaways. A little over a year ago I started searching for a good way to hold my cell phone in the car. I needed a way to keep the phone within reach and within a quick glance but NOT have it block my driving vision! I looked everywhere for a solution but nothing existed.
I was quite surprised to find out that there wasn't a high quality, flexible and simple solution anywhere on the market.
The humble beginnings of CelGo
The challenge of how to hold the cell phone was one that we worked on for almost a year. It was important to make it very secure but not bulky or heavy. So we started eating some popsicles. (pineapple worked best!)
We went through various versions of the popsicle stick tests to get it just right...
How do you make it hold firmly & gently at the same time?
For that you need a custom torsion spring. I was fortunate to meet an old gentleman in Los Angeles who has been in the spring manufacturing business for 50 years. He invited me up to his spring factory to learn about designing torsion springs. (there's a lot more to it than I thought!)
We tested a lot of different materials as well as different linkage parts. The CelGo needs to be able to withstand extreme summer dashboard temperatures as well as extreme winter temperatures. As it turned out, many materials couldn't stand the heat.
Thanks, in advance!
The reason for going through Kickstarter and asking for your support is to do this the right way. The cost of machine tooling and molds is very high. When it comes to design, I'm a perfectionist and making the best cell phone holder for your car means totally rethinking the concept and creating a fantastic experience for the user. Creating and manufacturing the CelGo in the US will help insure just that. Thank you!
Kickstarter Funding Will Be Used As Follows
- Injection Molding Tooling for the flying clamp (40%)
- Die tooling for the flying clamp metal side brackets (20%)
- Die tooling for the silicone pad and tubing parts (15%)
- Raw materials (15%)
- Packaging & Shipping (10%)
Risks and challenges
We have done everything we can to minimize risk for this project. Manufacturing in the United States further minimizes the risks. For example, offshore manufacturing has inherent risks such as, shipping problems, parts delays, design mistakes, etc.
The main challenge is working with the costs involved with manufacturing here in the US. After working on the project for over a year and working closely with manufacturers locally, we understand the challenges that we will face bringing this to market and we're ready for them! In the event of a problem with any of the manufacturers, we have backup companies standing by.
We have actual experience manufacturing in the United States. Two years ago we developed the CelJel desktop stand for cell phones. This product is design and manufactured in the United States. It involved a lot of challenging engineering as it involves molding silicone with steel but it gave us invaluable experience with creating and manufacturing a product in the US.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
