Hello! My name is Samantha Whitten and I'm the artist of The GaMERCaT, a webcomic that mixes gaming humor with mischievous felines. In 2017 I hosted a Kickstarter project to bring the first volume of the comic to print, and now I'm back again to hopefully fund the second volume!
What is The GaMERCaT?
The slice-of-life comic features an appropriately-named cat with access to a large library of games and an over-active imagination, who literally dives into popular franchises and tackles topics in gamer life from a cat's perspective. He's haunted by a materialistic fairy and preoccupied with raising a gamer kitten protege, all while he and his friends fly under the radar of blissfully ignorant humans.
The comic is free to read online at TheGaMERCaT.com but the printed copies include extras like bonus comics, concept art, illustrations and character profiles!
For the first project I kept the goal at the bare minimum and offered enhancements to the book as stretch goals. Since I want to be sure the second volume matches up to the first in both content and quality, all of the upgrades will be included by default this time! This means a higher base goal, but I know with your help we can hit it.
The book will be a perfect bound paperback with a 12pt spot gloss cover, sized at 9" x 6" and roughly 130 pages long. It picks up where the first book left off and includes the next 100 comics in the series. The art and layouts of some comics will be tweaked, mostly to be more suitable for print or to convert animated panels to static images.
The book will also include:
- New concept art
- Character profiles
- Bonus illustrations in the form of the next 10 Patreon wallpapers
- And an exclusive brand new 5-page bonus comic!
This time the bonus comic focuses on Glitch and how he came to be in the trash can where Gamercat first found him. Readers have long been asking for more information about his past and this comic will give a look into it.
In the last Kickstarter I offered an exclusive enamel pin and it was very well received, so I decided to do another one this time. I've always wanted to do Gamercat in a maneki neko style pose with an 8-bit coin, so this is my chance to make it happen.
This Gamercat pin is unique to this project and will not be restocked afterwards, so if you like it this is your chance to grab it. The standard pin is unlimited, but the shiny gold metal version is limited to only 200 pieces and reserved for the special shiny bundle pledge tier.
The Shiny Bundles return! This special pledge tier is limited to 200 copies and includes a signed book as well as the exclusive shiny version of the enamel pin.
This time I'm including a special bonus - I was clearing out storage recently and happened upon a box of backer kits from the very first plush Kickstarter back in 2014. The backer kits include the project's original bonus items of 2 vinyl stickers, a postcard, a 3.5x5 magnet and an I <3 GaMERCaT square button.
As a small thank you to all backers, everybody that pledges to any tier will be given a 1080p wallpaper version of the book's cover!
If funding exceeds the main goal I have some bonuses planned! These will be included free with every Volume 2 book if these goals are hit.
Progress & Timeline
I learned a lot from the first book's Kickstarter, so this time the book is fully completed and ready to submit to the printer as soon as the project ends and funds are delivered. All bonus items are also prepared and ready to go in the event that all of the stretch goals are reached.
File approval and sample production can take 2-4 weeks, and if everything is good on the first go, the book can go into production and will likely take 4-6 weeks. Shipping will add another 4-6 weeks, so the best case scenario for receiving the books is possibly mid to late November. Please understand this is an ESTIMATE and not guaranteed!
Where the Funds Go
The funds from this project will go towards producing the books, the bonus items, and shipping all rewards. Kickstarter takes 5% in fees, and Stripe (the payment processor) takes another 3%-5%. I also need to reserve a percentage for US taxes at the end of the year.
Any funds leftover after the fees are paid and the rewards are filled will be reinvested back into The GaMERCaT.
Shipping can be complicated and, unfortunately, rather expensive for international backers. I've done my best to find the cheapest rates and have detailed them below. All rates are gathered from USPS.com
I'm afraid I cannot control how much shipping will cost. I understand that international rates may be a major deterrent and I wish I could do something about them. I'm sorry!
Domestic Shipping (within the US)
- Media Mail $3-5 - All book-only rewards can be shipped via Media Mail. Single books ship for $3 and two or more books are $4-5 depending on how many
- First Class $5 - Single books + other items (stickers, pins, etc) need to be sent via First Class mail
- Priority Flat Rate Padded Envelope $7 - Pledges that include more than one book with other items (stickers, pins, etc) will be sent via flat rate as this option becomes cheaper
- First Class International $16 - For 1-2 books + other items. Shipping to Canada is slightly cheaper than other countries.
- Priority Flat Rate International $24 - Pledges that include more than two books will be sent via flat rate as this option becomes cheaper
International Shipping (outside the US)
- First Class International $23 - For 1-2 books + other items. First class international is the cheapest option available for the weight of the book
- Priority Flat Rate International $34 - Pledges that include more than two books will be sent via flat rate as this option becomes cheaper
International Customs Fees (outside the US)
Please be aware that some international shipments may have import duties/customs fees added on by the receiving country. This cost is NOT included in the shipping cost I charge.
I cannot control this and I cannot pay the fees. All backers are responsible for understanding their country's import laws and paying any import fees charged on their packages.
I will not undervalue the items on customs forms to avoid fees, this is illegal.
Risks and challenges
I have many years of experience from running my own online ecommerce business, which already has an established and dedicated fulfillment system that will be used to fulfill the pledges from this Kickstarter. I have also completed & shipped three previous Kickstarter projects so far.
I have existing working relationships with the chosen producers for all of the products in this Kickstarter and can rely on them to deliver a quality product in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
