About this project
ABOUT THE BOOK
While living a peaceful life in the Outland, Gage is confronted by a mysterious talking raven who sends him on a quest to retrieve the ring of the Allfather, Draupnir. His quest leads him to the dark heart of the City, where Gage's belief in the old Norse myths set him against others, namely the media mogul know as Odin and his right-hand man, Mr. Nobyashi. In an urban landscape entirely foreign to him, where anti-establishment punks rage riotous war with Odin's corporate holdings and everything seems strangely tinged with old magic, Gage finds himself at the head of a movement poised to re-establish the Norse pantheon to prominence and replant the roots of the World Tree.
The Winter King is a 124 page original graphic novel that has been picked up for publication by Arcana Studios. It is tentatively slated for release in October of 2013 and is aimed at an audience of Teen and up.
BEHIND THE STORY
The Winter King started as a kernel of an idea almost a decade ago. It began as little more than a love affair between adolescent readings of Bulfinch's Mythology and more "mature" listenings of Pink Floyd. It grew into an expression of old ideas colliding head first with new attitudes and an exposition on how happiness requires simplicity but life is never simple. Last year, the pitch was sent out to publishers to garner some interest or at least some constructive feedback and to our utter delight Arcana Studios responded and said they were interested in bringing this book to life.
George Zapata is the immensely talented artist attached to this project. He's got the grasp of characterization and the ability to handle both rural beauty and urban grit with panache. He makes it looks like the ancient and the modern are having a fist fight in an alley and I love every minute of it. I'm sure you will too!
Through the grass roots support of the Kickstarter community, George and I will bring to life this world in which the stark differences of natural simplicity and conformist chaos come together.
WHAT THE MONEY WILL PAY FOR
Okay so I realize that $9,800 seems like a lot of money to make a graphic novel, but when you consider the talent that George is bringing to the table compounded with the page count coming in at a whopping 124 it starts to make more sense.
This amount also takes into consideration the fees that Kickstarter and Amazon apply for a successful campaign.
The funds we raise here will go towards all the artwork, plain a simple. George is a professional artist, and as such he has bills to pay. We already have the marketing and distribution support of a major comics publisher, Arcana, in place. Now it's just a matter of getting the art done so that the book can hit the shelves! So your generous support will go towards bringing you more of this:
And art like this:
MORE ABOUT ARCANA STUDIOS
For those of you who are regular comic book readers like myself, I have no doubt that you already know Arcana Studios. They're an independent powerhouse of a publisher.
They have an armada of amazing books under their banner already, possibly the most recognizable of which is Kade, but some of my personal favorites include A Clockwork Girl, the Howard Lovecraft books, Philosopher Rex, and Dandelion. All their books have a home at Diamond, the premiere direct market comic book distributor, so their comics reach stores all across North America and I have personally seen their books in stores from Paris to Brazil and as far away as Australia. Not only that, but you can get all of their books digitally through apps like Comixology.
If you haven't read anything from Arcana yet, I strongly urge you to do so. You can check out their full offering at their website: www.arcana.com
We certainly don't want to be presumptive, but we'd like to give you an idea of what we would do should we happen to raise more than our goal. Some of our ideas include:
- A weekly webcomic that explores and expands on the world in which the story takes place - this would focus on peripheral characters, build a foundation for the grievances of the Fenris Wolf Pack, give a sense of how Odin Enterprises is effected those lower on the totem pole, offer some insight into the world's connection with Norse mythology, etc. The webcomic would lead up to the release of the graphic novel.
- A fully rendered motion comic from the completed story
- Hardcover and leather bound special editions of the book
- COLOR! Color costs more to produce, and more time for George to create. But it would look AWESOME.
Don't forget to check out the updates for more information and artwork! Thank you so much for checking out our project. And if you're donating to our endeavor, thank you so much again.
Risks and challenges
There are always risks and challenges inherent in a project that depends on a timeline. What if George gets sick? What if the timeline is shifted? What if there's a delay in production?
Rest assured that, even in the event of production delays, we'll make sure that all the rewards go out as soon as humanly possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
