About this project
Patrice writes, “Jazz was my first musical passion, and has remained hugely influential and inspiring for me – a sort of ‘silent partner’ behind my work as a classical singer. I’ve been dipping a toe in from the bridge between the two genres all along. Now my collection of songs, and opportunities to perform with other like-minded musicians, have brought me to the jumping-in point. Sharing this new territory with listeners is an absolutely thrilling opportunity for me.”"Not only is Michaels a fine soprano with a bell-like sonority . . . but she's got sophisticated taste in music . . . Witty, adult and smart."

INTERSECTION: Jazz Meets Classical Song will debut as a live broadcast on WFMT 98.7FM on Monday, June 10, 8–10 pm. This is the first step in a project that will culminate with the release of a CD, ensuring that our efforts will be available for music lovers everywhere. We want to bring listeners a musical experience with a new take on everything from art song to standards, ballads to bel canto. Our ensemble will play new commissioned works by Laurie Altman, Peter Labella and Randy Bauer; and rarely heard songs by Chuck Israels, John Musto, Lee Hoiby and many others. We’re lucky that WFMT will allow us to invite a live audience for this very special event. The first ten backers at the $250 level (or above) will be invited to bring a friend and join us in the studio for the debut performance.
With your help, the recording of INTERSECTION will be produced by Grammy Award-winning Cedille Records, to be released in 2014. The CD will be a distinctive addition to the contemporary repertoire already present in the Cedille catalog.
We have truly unique and beautiful music, fabulous performers, and a great recording company lined up for this project. Cedille Chicago label president Jim Ginsburg says: “INTERSECTION is a perfect example of the kind of catalog-enhancing program we want to produce, and Patrice Michaels and her team are superb artists deserving of support and promotion.”
We’re asking for your help to “kick-start” this project and raise the funds to cover the expenses associated with: our debut performance at WFMT; the newly-commissioned works for this project; a portion of the studio recording costs.
We would deeply appreciate your support of INTERSECTION, and hope you’ll share this unique project with your friends and fellow music lovers.
With sincere gratitude for your contributions,Patrice Michaels, Zach Brock, Nick Photinos, Kuang-Hao Huang and Cedille Records

Who is CEDILLE RECORDS?
Cedille Records is a Grammy Award-winning label dedicated to producing classical recordings of the highest quality featuring outstanding musicians from Chicago. Our purpose is to enhance the world’s catalog of recorded music by documenting these musicians’ innovative musical programs. The extensive dissemination of these recordings is designed to bring these artists to a worldwide audience.
Sales of CDs and downloads cover only 20% of the expenses of carrying out this specialized, critically acclaimed, community-based musical mission. So, like other arts endeavors, we operate as a charitable organization and rely on tax deductible contributions in order to produce and release these outstanding, highly distinctive recordings. To fully fund the cost of producing and releasing INTERSECTION, we’re using traditional fundraising methods such as letters and phone calls alongside this Kickstarter campaign .
Here is what some of the musicians who have recorded for Cedille Records have had to say about our work:
“Cedille has been a wonderful partner in helping the [Chicago] Sinfonietta to promote our mission of diversity and inclusiveness in classical music and has consistently supported our efforts to grow the audiences.”
— James Hirsch, executive director, Chicago Sinfonietta
“The professionalism and high quality of Cedille’s products have earned my recordings many wonderful reviews, and experts in my field consider my recordings with Cedille to be among the best-recorded oboe releases ever.”
— Alex Klein, former principal oboist, Chicago Symphony Orchestra
“The time and dedication you’ve put in to make this wonderful recording is really extraordinary. I have never worked with as tireless, meticulous, dedicated, and quality-driven a producer.”
— Aaron Jay Kernis, composer
How would my MONEY be spent?
This Kickstarter campaign will fund the ensemble’s rehearsals, debut performance, and a portion of the recording fees. The total project budget includes:
– Funding for two new commissions
- “Strayhorn Suite” by Peter Labella
- “Neighborhood Songs” by Randall Bauer
– Funding for ensemble
- recording (Patrice will waive her recording fee, as an extra donation.)
– Costs associated with
- travel for Zach Brock (from New York to Chicago)
- score preparation for all works
- disc preparation (editing, manufacturing, production) and promotion
If the goal is exceeded, how will you use the "extra" funds?
Getting musicians ready to record music is only the first step in producing a CD. This Kickstarter campaign will fund the ensemble’s rehearsals, debut performance, and a portion of the recording fees. Once the musicians have recorded the music, there’s more work to do to get it to you:
- Editing and mixing the recording
- Writing, copy-editing, and designing the CD booklet
- Manufacture of the CDs and printing of the booklets
- Designing and printing the promotional materials
- Shipping the CD to distributors around the world
- Publicizing and marketing the recording so it reaches listeners everywhere
Cedille Records will invest a total of $60,000 (including the expenses incurred by both our contracted and full-time staff) to bring INTERSECTION to life.
Any donations you make that put us past our $15,000 Kickstarter goal will complement the donations we are soliciting through traditional methods, ensuring that INTERSECTION becomes another disc in the acclaimed Cedille Records catalog, meeting Cedille’s stated mission: to enhance the international catalog of recorded music and to bring these artists’ wonderful recordings to a worldwide audience.
Thank you for donating as generously as you can!

Please help us make the music!
Risks and challenges
Patrice Michaels' critically acclaimed experience conceiving and performing a wide range of projects in many styles gives her a solid base on which to build this new project. Her musical collaborators are equally experienced and prepared to help create an outstanding recording.
While the process of producing, manufacturing, and bringing to market a CD is complex, Cedille Records has an established record of success in each of these areas. To date, the company has produced and released over 140 original CDs, receiving multiple Grammy Awards.
Funding is most significant challenge facing this project. An exceptional team of highly-qualified individuals and organizations has been assembled. Their costs must be covered and additional funds are needed to pay manufacturing expenses. Publicity and marketing requires a portion of the budget as well, so that INTERSECTION has maximum visibility, impact and availability for listeners. This Kickstarter campaign is an important part of our fundraising efforts to ensure that INTERSECTION comes to life.
