About

This book will be a tribute Cecil the lion and the life he lived on the African plains. Rather than focusing on the awful way in which Cecil died, this book will take an in-depth look at the life of this exceptional lion. Where was he born? How did he live? What were the unique characteristics that made him so famous? What role did he play in the natural environment around him?  What do we know about his mates, cubs, rival males and the lion community in which he lived? Why was he chosen for study by Oxford University? How did his world change in the thirteen years of his life? How was he able to live more than a decade in spite of the political and social upheavals in Zimbabwe, the continued presence of big game trophy hunters and man’s unending expansion into the lions’ world?

The book will honour Cecil and increase people’s awareness of the plight of lions, the fragility of African wildlife and their ever-dwindling numbers.

In the course of writing the book, we plan to visit the area of Zimbabwe in which Cecil lived and interview a variety of people who were involved with him. We will connect with the people from Oxford University who were studying Cecil and his environment. We will also spend time researching the lives of African lions, the threats to their survival and the various reserves, programs and charities set up to protect them.

We plan to include photographs to be obtained (with approval and credit) from Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, the Wildlife Unit of Oxford University and other sources. We will also add those we will take ourselves of the environment in which Cecil lived and relevant ones we have already taken on previous camera safaris in the region.

This will be primarily an e-book, with a limited edition soft cover version printed as well for biggest supporters and contributors.  We expect both versions to be ready for publication early in 2016.

Our foremost goal is that our readers will be motivated to get involved in the protection of lions and contribute to and support the organizations that are trying to help them.

Risks and challenges

One of the biggest challenges faced by anyone writing a non-fiction book is being able to obtain accurate information from both primary and secondary sources. Due to our lengthy experience in journalism and writing, we are very familiar with research methodology and know how to get reliable sources to want to cooperate with us. We are confident in our ability to get all the information we need for this book.

It is also essential that the book be written in a clear and compelling way, with a style suitable to the content and the expected readership and that the stated deadlines be met. Again, with our experience, we are sure we can to do these things as well.

Good photographs of Cecil will add a lot to this publication, but since he is now deceased, we won’t be able to take these ourselves. Cecil was, however, one of the most photographed animals in Africa. In our experience, most people and organizations who own such photographs are happy to let them be used for a project of this kind. This should especially be true for this book since our main goals are to increase awareness of the plight of African lions and to encourage people to do what they can to help them.

Also, there can be difficulties associated with travelling to remote locations in Africa with possibly unstable political, economic and security situations. As we have spent time in Zimbabwe before, however, we do not think there will be any challenges we will not be able to overcome.
