Update September 27
BANGKOK PHOSPHORS has hit almost 140% funded with 2 days left on the campaign! I have spoken with the printers and if we can get to 150% I will be able to add 12 more pages of photographs to the book.
I have also already reached out to ambient musician SJF (who I have collaborated with before here and here) to create a soundscape piece of Bangkok to accompany the journey of the photobook, to be released as an MP3 download available to all backers!

In 2019 under the auspicious July heat of the Buddhist Holiday, Asalha Puja, I landed in Bangkok on a journey to uncover the hidden nocturnal side of the Thai capital with my new photographic series BANGKOK PHOSPHORS.
I wandered the city, from downtown Bang Rak to the Temple of Dawn, to discover the different faces of the city and the people as they were illuminated by the phosphors of the night.
THE PHOTO SERIES
BANGKOK PHOSPHORS is a photo series exploring the streets and architecture of Bangkok illuminated by night. Bangkok is a city defined by its light & shadows, and like the phosphors of an old television set that are burnt-out and grainy, the city holds onto its soft color and afterglow even after the sun goes down. The people of the night come out and a new world emerges ...
BANGKOK PHOSPHORS was captured over a period of five weeks as I went out every night to discover the changing face of the megacity between the old way of life and modernity:
With your help I would like to bring BANGKOK PHOSPHORS to life as a limited-edition Photobook via Kickstarter crowdfunding to tell the story of this city as it has not been seen before.
A 300 COPY LIMITED EDITION PHOTO BOOK OF BANGKOK PHOSPHORS
Please note: this Campaign is priced in New Zealand Dollars (NZD)
The BANGKOK PHOSPHORS photobook will have trim size of 14" x 9-1/2" (the same as my previous photobook, DANCH DREAMS), so it is the perfect size to show the cinematic details of the city. The photobook will be in landscape format and open nice and wide. The book will be ~72 pages long
I intend on further improving the quality of the photobook by building off what I learned with DANCHI DREAMS and by collaborating again with my friends at Flaneur Culture Lab in Taipei to print the book.
BANGKOK PHOSPHORS will take you on a journey through the city and the fleeting shadows of the people we meet along the way. The photographs will be full page offset printed on high quality paper.
About the name BANGKOK PHOSPHORS:
From street markets and busy highways to the glow of old CRT box television sets in people's homes, the way the night of Bangkok glows with a hint of nostalgia gives the city a unique visual tone that inspired this project.

Printing & Delivery
BANGKOK PHOSPHORS will be offset printed in Taipei in collaboration with my friends at Flaneur Culture Lab, a bespoke publishing house who helped me produce my previous photobook. As with before, I will be personally supervising the printing process and will be delivering the rewards using EMS international shipping with tracking to make sure every backer gets their photobook.
Once the funding goal is met, I will organize printing of the photobook and engage the binders.
The photobook will ship by December.
Previous Photobook Project: DANCHI DREAMS
In 2018 I successfully crowdfunded and published my first photobook through Kickstarter, DANCHI DREAMS, a nocturnal journey through the concrete memories of danchi public housing apartments in Japan.
The book was a big hit (over 250% funded) and I learned an incredible amount along the way through the process of designing, printing, and shipping the book to backers.
WHO ARE YOU?
I am Cody, a photographer from New Zealand. I have been based between New Zealand and Tokyo for 5 years. I photograph cities at night with my project Derive which was born in the neon glow of Tokyo. Together with my wife, Rina, we came to Bangkok in 2019 as we embarked on a journey to explore the world's cities, and we encountered a beautiful and enchanting place that was the inspiration to create the BANGKOK PHOSPHORS photobook.

Risks and challenges
There is minimal risk. I have previously funded and successfully printed a photobook of similar format through Kickstarter that was delivered on time and as planned.
The design and graphic design for this project is almost complete and so once the Kickstarter completes, I will begin the process of engaging the printers.
