About this project
A Profound Waste of Time is a bold new videogame culture magazine, a lovingly produced home to great writing on the medium and its accompanying narratives. Each issue will play host to a rich variety of voices from inside and outside the industry, interwoven with stunning imagery from leading illustrators and artists. Editorially discerning and beautifully designed, each magazine will serve to celebrate and elevate gaming culture and discussion.
Inspired by high-end culture magazines such as Little White Lies and Elephant, our aim is to redefine what a physical videogame magazine can be, and offer a peerlessly presented collection of progressive writing and artwork. Unconcerned with the latest news or reviews, A Profound Waste of Time will dissect the virtual worlds that inspire, unite and challenge us.
Each issue will see seasoned journalists and veteran game creators sidling up with the best emerging writers and innovative indie devs, musing on game design, theory and appreciation. Our aim is that A Profound Waste of Time becomes a collectable publication and a bold new mouthpiece for videogame culture.

A Profound Waste of Time’s editor and art director is Caspian Whistler, who started the project as a self published fanzine in 2014. Caspian works in the fields of graphic design and illustration and lives and works in London, UK.
Acting as consultant on the project is Darren Wall, founder of videogame history publisher Read-Only Memory, known for high-end publications as Sega Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works, Britsoft: An Oral History and most recently The Bitmap Brothers: Universe. Darren will be advising on all aspects of production and design to ensure the highest quality outcome.
Our proofreader is Ian Evenden, a videogame journalist since 2003, working for publications such as Edge, Official Xbox Magazine and NGamer. He also has a sideline in science writing, appearing in BBC Focus, Science Uncovered and BBC Sky at Night Magazine.
Our first issue cover will feature Yacht Club Game’s incredible indie platformer Shovel Knight, reimagined in intricate painterly detail by acclaimed illustrator Dan Mumford. Dan's incredibly complex and unique line art style felt like a perfect fit for the high fantasy world of the The Order of No Quarter, and we couldn't be happier with his take on Shovel Knight's iconic approach to the Tower of Fate. A massive thank you to Yacht Club for working with us on this.

The Magazine – Signed Special Edition
The Signed Special edition features an alternate, glow-in-the-dark Shovel Knight cover by renowned illustrator Dan Mumford. In low light, the stars and moon will glow brightly, thanks to a layer of special UV sensitive ink. This very special edition will also be signed by the artist.
Designed by John ‘JJSignal’ James, lead artist on the indie smash Read Only Memories, our Kickstarter exclusive enamel pin is available for all backers who selected the Patron Tier and above.

The Magazine – Dennis Weddin Edition
We’re privileged to have Dennis Weddin – co-founder of Dennaton Games and the artist/designer behind groundbreaking top down fuck ‘em up Hotline Miami – as one of our contributors to Issue 1 of A Profound Waste of Time. As part of this extremely special and limited reward, Dennis will create a Hotline Miami-esque pixel portrait of you to forever stoke admiration and jealousy in those who gaze upon it. This reward will be delivered as a digital file.
A Profound Waste of Time is being manufactured by the award winning Pureprint, based in East Sussex. The job will be closely overseen by the A Profound Waste of Time team to ensure the best colour reproduction. Our spectacular glow-in-the-dark Signed Special Edition will be carefully tested prior to the final job is run, and tests will feature in our backer updates.

A Profound Waste of Time started life as a self-published, self-produced independent fanzine in 2014. Back in its original form, it spanned just 20 pages. A year later we produced a bigger, better version comprising 50 pages and a richer range of content. This expanded edition received a flurry of interest online and gave birth to the idea that we could develop the concept into a fully fledged magazine.
Turning to crowdfunding is exciting as we can remain independent and control every aspect of the editorial, production and fulfillment process. A vital slice of our funding goal goes towards fees for each contributor – it’s crucial for us to ensure everyone who contributes to our magazine is compensated for their hard work and effort. We will be posting both general and backer exclusive updates including snippets from articles, previews of illustrations, production tests and other behind-the-scenes morsels as the campaign progresses.

Risks and challenges
Design and Production:
There's very little to worry about in terms of creating publications on Kickstarter, but no matter how much experience or know how you have, it's possible to run into production issues. We're lucky and privileged to be working with some of the best printers and fulfillers in the country, so if things do go wrong, we'll have the best support available to quickly rectify things. This is compounded by the fact that we're handling all of the manufacturing process in the UK, so we have the advantages of everything being within relatively easy reach should things go wrong.
If anything does goes awry, you'll be first to know, and we'll keep you in the loop throughout the whole process.
There is a chance the magazine may release slightly later than predicted, but we have given ourselves a lot of breathing room with our timeline. This is our first time through the whole process, and setting up publications of this scale is a complicated process. It is important that we learn to walk before we run.
Delivery and Fulfilment:
As with any project dealing with international postage, there are risks involved that can affect delivery, many out of our hands. The magazine is still in it's infancy and we're using the Kickstarter campaign to gauge interest and asses the size of the potential audience. It's our aim that the magazine has a long lifespan with more issues down the line, but for these reasons we think it would be unwise to give a set date or schedule.
Our top priority is making sure that whatever timeline we choose allows us to keep a high level of quality and craftsmanship. We're a small team currently, and it's important that we find a rate of production that is manageable. Our backers will be first to know once things are settled.
