About this project

The Project

Bringing Sparks, a twenty-first century romantic suspense novel, to book stores, libraries and ereaders near you.

What is Sparks?

Sparks is a novel with the modern corporate world as its setting. It involves you in the story of a stellar business analyst who makes a series of discoveries that thrust her into the conflict among the top executives at several privately held corporations. The stakes in this dangerous game get higher with each discovery until at the last, it's her life that's being wagered. Her future and her love are headed toward one of the executives - but only if she survives.

As with Michael Lewis' non-fiction expose The Big Short and Oliver Stone's movie Wall Street, the context is the impending stock market crash of 2008.

Sparks is the first of a family of novels involving the powerful San Chappelle family and their town, Skye Pointe. I have started the second novel and have concepts for an additional three. While the novels are related by the family and location, they are not a series.

Where I'm At

An early version of this story was self-published - as an ebook only - under the title Sunrise on the Pier. I unpublished it before it garnered much notice or generated any sales; and I'm very excited to prepare the new story for commercial publication. A very few of you read Sunrise on the Pier; and will recognize the characters and some situations. Sparks, however, is a far more vivid story - hence the fireworks in the above book trailer video.

As for where I am now, if Sparks were a film, I'd say that shooting has completed and I'm now in the editing room. What remains is shaping the scene progression to make the drama more intense, the action tighter, the love scenes hotter. I may have to call a few actors (or in my case, characters) back in to reshoot some scenes or add just a few new ones. There may even be some scenes on the cutting room floor. I'm working with a wonderful editor during this process, and I've already gotten and am acting on his initial critique.

Follow along! Sponsors of this project receive updates filled with information regarding the week's work. You'll have my revision notes and artifacts, back-story, and inside information. I draw a little from these materials for the weekly post on my blog, CathrynLouis.com.

By the way, my editor doesn't know about the project, so shhh... let's not tell him.

Why Kickstarter?

One of the big changes occuring in publishing is the shift of editorial and some publishing responsibilities from publishing houses to the author. Given two authors with fresh, unique voices; it is the one with the professionally edited and polished story that has the best opportunity to grab and hold the hearts of readers. Since my goal is for Sparks to be a best seller - and yes, I mean on the New York Times Best-Seller List for fiction - this project is to fund its editorial and publishing services. You think that 'Best Seller' is too lofty a goal? The way I see it is that I'm asking you to join this project - so 'Best Seller' had better be my goal! Which brings us to...

Your Sponsorship

Your sponsorship of this project will fund the editorial process and preparation for publishing; to be completed near the end of 2011, or early 2012. Every contribution is rewarded (please see sidebar) because each of you is greatly appreciated. Not only could your participation launch the next best seller, it could launch a family of best sellers about the San Chappelles. Join me and let's make Sparks!

Notes

About the ebook collection: it will contain short stories, essays, and other writings from my blog. The long version of Second Best and the story, Sisters have not been and will not be published on my blog.

About the mousepad and traveler's mug rewards: they are provided from the Zazzle.Com Sparks store.

About the '+' sign: it means that you will also receive all the gifts from the levels below your sponsorship.

For the "Name a Character" reward

Gabrielle's team (current names): Ross Courtland, Cristin Shepard, Steve Mallard, Harry Knowles, Mary Alice Petersen.

Company Partners (current names): Larry Sherman, Russel Stokes, Matthew Burke, Carla Wright, August Taylor

The Sepia Flower

Why do I use it? It has become part of my online "brand", representing Cathryn Louis, the pen name for me, Catherine Dudley. I use a pen name because I have a middle schooler and her friends were very excited about me writing a book. They expected it to be YA, and it is SO not… The pen name makes it a little harder (I’m not naive enough to think impossible) to find my writings, and their parents appreciate the effort. Read more about me in the #amwriting directory and Publisher's Marketplace.
