As strange as it may be, it’s no secret that cats love boxes. So, shouldn’t we provide the greatest creatures of all time with the greatest box of all time!? The answer is YES!, and the answer is CATBOX.
CATBOX is the cat bed of your favorite feline's dreams! It is a rectangular cardboard box, designed to fit cats comfortably. There are cut-outs on each end for face scratching, easy head resting and your daily amusement. That’s right, CATBOX isn’t just for cats! The outside of the box is illustrated to transform those purring dozy cat fantasies into your comical reality. Essentially, it brings you, the human, all the happiness of dressing your cat up in a silly costume, except they also enjoy it. It's the purrfect cat bed for your cat, and you!
When your furry friend steps into a CATBOX and inevitably loafs into place, they will be transformed into a valiant galaxy voyager, a musical genius or a… the possibilities are endless!!
YES! ...at least they'll think so. We understand that cats come in all different sizes, but lucky for us, even the biggest of cats somehow find a way to squeeze into boxes of all sizes. At the moment, we will be producing a one-size-fits-all CATBOX. The inside dimensions are 14.5 inches (length) by 7 inches (width) by 4.5 inches (height).
Why do cats like boxes? Confined spaces give cats a sense of safety and security. In the wild, small spaces allow cats to both stalk their prey and hide from predators. Although domesticated cats may not have to catch their own food or run and hide from predators, they still exhibit the same tendency to seek out small spaces, like cardboard boxes. “They can get into that box and they can’t be approached from the side or the back where they’re not aware of it,” says Dr. Stephen Zawistowski of the ASPCA. It is also possible that these confined spaces act as swaddles. “When young, they used to snuggle with their mom and litter mates, feeling the warmth and soothing contact,” says Dr. Nicholas Dodman, Professor Emeritus of Behavioral Pharmacology and Animal Behavior at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University. He and Dr. Temple Grandin, Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University’s research suggests that the close contact of the box releases endorphins, causing pleasure and reducing stress. A study by Dutch researchers also found that cats who were provided with a box adapted more quickly to their new environment compared to a control group of cats who were not provided with a box. Therefore, purrhaps it can be said that a cat with a CATBOX is a happier cat than a cat without a CATBOX!
Because our goal is to design boxes to fulfill the infinite dreams of you and your cat, we had to partner with a leading manufacturer of sustainable packaging. All of our boxes are composed of 100% recycled corrugated cardboard, with labels that are printed with cat-safe vegetable based inks. CATBOX is designed, manufactured and shipped from right here in Georgia, USA.
When your feline friend is ready for their next CATBOX adventure, don't fret because CATBOX is 100% recyclable and biodegradable! Thus, the cycle continues and no trash is added to our overflowing landfills! There’s no need to make a litter box of our environment!
Through this Kickstarter, we hope to raise enough money to fund the first minimum order of both the AstroBox and the RockBox. From there, we will continue the production of new designs! Our goal of $22,000 covers the production of the first minimum order, shipping materials, Kickstarter fees and fulfillment, plus a little wiggle room, just in case. Because shipping costs count towards our funding goal, we included the shipping cost for the minimum amount of boxes we need to sell in order to meet the first minimum order costs.
With your help, we will be able to fulfill a multitude of dreams of feline purr makers everywhere! If you love this project, check out the rewards and get your favorite feline friend their very own CATBOX!!
CATBOX is the collaboration between creator J. Magnus Nelson and creative director Jamie Bourgeois: two friends who share a mutual love for cats and this weird box thing that they do. They met in Savannah, Georgia, where they both attended the Savannah College of Art and Design. Magnus graduated with a BFA in Sound Design, and Jamie with a BFA in Fibers (obviously two degrees that make them authorities in the feline lounge product industry). Starting with Magnus’s brilliant idea in 2014, the two have worked as a team, along with cats Harrison, Squirrel and Cersei, through research and development to create the physical design and theme of each CATBOX.
All of the cats (and humans) only get to experience and enjoy CATBOX if our Kickstarter campaign is fully funded! Please consider helping us make their fantasies come true by spreading the word across social media and in real life! You can share our campaign link along with any of our hilarious images, maybe send some snail-mail, or even start up a cat parade! We really and truly appreciate your support! Please follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter under the handle @catboxworld and #catboxworld. Thank you!
Notes on Shipping:
Because we are a new small business, we are at the disposal of USPS. CATBOX is light, but it's larger than a standard size mailer. We are not charging you any "handling" fees, or even for the cost of the 100% recycled cardboard mailer. Our shipping price is just the cost of shipping! We understand that the international shipping cost is especially high, but we still wanted to offer it as an option!
On international shipments, we are obligated to declare the full value of the item(s) on customs forms, and the backer is responsible for any import duties.
Cats (for being so purrfect), Lane Gardner (for introducing us + general support and big ideas), Pratt Industries (for caring about the environment and CATBOX), Corey Eisenberg (AstroBox color), Taylor Jenkins (video color correction), Jason Belisha (voice in second CATBOX video), David Spangenburg (CATBOX photos), The Nolsen Family, Jamie's family (including the Gardners), Mahima Dhesi, Henry McGehee, Clay Skinner, Katherine Sandoz, Spalding Nix, The Huertas, Gabriella Garcia-Pardo, Kickstarter, mothers everywhere, the countless people who endured us talking about CATBOX for three years and sharing such amazing feedback, and YOU! THANK YOU!
Risks and challenges
We understand that all new endeavors come across challenges, especially when there's manufacturing in the mix! Through many trials and diligent research of our product design and conversations with our manufacturer, we feel very confident that we are equipped and flexible enough to meet the needs of any challenge. Creating a CATBOX is fairly straightforward. We collaborate on a theme, the design is illustrated, and we send it to our manufacturer, who will print and produce the boxes only a few miles from where we live in Atlanta, Georgia. The same manufacturer will be producing the mailers for each CATBOX to be shipped in. (Yes! 100% recycled corrugated cardboard mailers, too!) We promise to be transparent and honest in communicating with our backers, and to actively deal with any challenges in a timely and professional manner!
