We have one goal with this Kickstarter: to change lives. Every pledge supports and provides work for indigenous women in Colombia, supporting local artisans and preserving hand craftsmanship.
Ethically made with unique patterns our bags preserve Colombian heritage and provide jobs to local women of the Wayuu people in Northern Colombia. The collection is made using the finest hand crochet techniques and with 100% soft leather. We want to maintain the human element in our products whilst keeping alive a tradition and making a social impact.
Stylish and versatile the Wayuu backpack will go everywhere you go, whether it’s everyday life in your city or discovering new places. The Wayuu bag represents self-expression and self-discovery; take it with you on your adventures and together we can explore the world.
MEET THE WAYUU WOMEN WHO WEAVE OUR BAGS , BRACELETS AND TEXTILES. Our ultimate goal in promoting a sustainable, ethical brand is to gain the trust and respect of people everywhere, just as we have done with the local tribes and communities in Colombia. We want the consumer to believe, not only in our mission and in us, but also in the power of the fashion industry to make a change and impact in the world.
It is important to clarify that we are not a charity. We are a consumer brand with a social mission that supports local artisans and helps to provide jobs to women living in challenging conditions.
After completing my degree in Journalism in Bogotá, I decided to return to London, to work for the company where I interned before university. I arrived back in London with a suitcase full of clothes and a side project called CASTELLANO ETHNIC ORIGINS. After graduating I spent 5 months in Colombia, creating and developing CASTELLANO. My idea was to tell and show people in England the human stories of the indigenous women in my country by designing bracelets and handbags that would be handmade by them.
I had no idea about how to start a business, write a business plan or any knowledge about margins, mark ups or import duties. Despite this, I followed my passion and used my life savings to produce 500 bracelets, 50 bespoke Wayuu bags embroidered with Swarovski crystals and 4 backpack prototypes in Colombia. This was the first step towards reaching my dream to become a young entrepreneur who can make an impact in the world. Fearless and with strength and belief, I decided to quit my full time job to focus on my business. With little money in my pockets I managed to rent a room in London and begin the hard journey of a social entrepreneur.
Two years after that life-changing decision I am launching this Kickstarter campaign, to tell you and the rest of the world who I am and what I have created. I am here because I need your support to push CASTELLANO to the next level of becoming an international brand with a social mission.
I have no other investors, or received any financial aid up to this point. But I do have mentors, advisers and my loyal team of interns. We are a small team but we work very hard and with passion to gain trust and build a community of consumers who believe in our mission statement as much as we do. Read more about me.
Our mission is simple, to PRESERVE AND SUPPORT COLOMBIA HAND CRAFTSMANSHIP. We deliver a one-of-a-kind luxury product with transparency to the global market that empowers indigenous communities while sustaining the finest craftsmanship in Colombia.
Risks and challenges
During the last couple of years, we have worked non-stop to find the best artisans and wayuu weavers who carefully make our textiles and mochila bags. We have also research deeply the leather industry in Colombia to find the right leather suppliers and manufacturer. Today we sourced the best environmentally friendly materials and offer a large range of bespoke bags and bracelets.
Having said that, and regardless of the great control we have over our supply chain, sometimes problems arise, as any manufacturing process at high volumes, processes can be delayed.
We support only 100% handmade items. Products that are handmade will always differ slightly by the individual nature of each design, size, patterns and colours. Be aware of this fact as we reserve the right to NOT ACCEPT RETURNS AND REFUNDS when we have clearly stated in our product description the colour, shape, material and dimensions of the item.
We have been working with the same group of indigenous women that will produce the CASTELLANO® Backpack textiles for over two years. We have a strong relationship with them, and they have never conclude an order late to us during our entire relationship. However, they have a maximum capacity of 500 textiles during a normal production cycle of 60-90 days. If we receive orders beyond this amount, then it will take an additional 60-90 days to produce any remaining orders.
That is without a doubt our biggest risk. Rest assured, we have done everything in our power to avoid such delays. Fortunately the Wayuu women have the ability to respond quickly to these unexpected situations expanding their production capacity with more skilled artisans in the entire Guajira Desert.
We have been working with our fulfillment partner in the UK, Keymail Global Logistics, one year. The have the ability to receive our colombian production and ship thousands of orders each week. With a bit of advanced planning, we are more than confident in their ability to fulfill all UK orders. For the USA we have partnered with XXX to integrate our kickstarer orders and take care of shipping inside the country.
Shipping: We will ship all domestic orders via USPS Parcel Select. For orders shipping to Canada, we will deliver via Canada Post. For orders shipping to any other international destination, we will ship via ROYAL MAIL / PARCEL FORNCE INTERNATIONAL BASED IN THE UK.
While we typically do not have many issues with USPS or Any other shipping company, please be aware that they do occur at a low rate. About 1% of orders typically have a shipping error or issue -- either on behalf of the receiver (bad address, moved, etc.) or on behalf of the shipper (package lost, destroyed in transit, etc.) We will insure all packages on your behalf and we will purchase postage that includes a tracking number to help resolve any issues that may occur. If your order is ‘undeliverable' we will reach out to you to update your address and re-ship. Please note however, once a package has left our warehouse, we no longer have control over it. In the rare case where a package is lost, stolen, or destroyed, we will file an insurance claim with USPS on your behalf, but we will not cover the cost of replacement.
