In October of 2014 I first participated in Jake Parker’s Inktober challenge: an ink drawing a day done throughout the entire month. I posted my prose drawings on my instagram and immediately saw a reaction. People were really taken with these strange drawings coming from my head and I was finding the process extremely therapeutic. As I was drawing, the direction wasn’t immediately clear to me, but as I finished my 2014 Inktober collection I labeled the drawings Postpartum. Many people asked for me to print a book of the drawings and so I took pre-orders for a limited amount of handbound, screenprinted books with the help of publisher wideawakepress.com and my screenprinter Minor Press. The books were a hit, but the hand-made nature made it impossible for me to make mass quantities.
Since the success of Postpartum and the collections acceptance to the 3x3 annual magazine, I decided to try my hand at a similar collection for the 2015 Inktober.
With the support of this years drawings I decided to bind them again, but wanted to make more books. Just because I’m not making each book personally this time, doesn’t mean I don’t want each book to be unique and presented well.
The finished book for Postmortem will be a 6”x6” hardbound full-color book, with embossing on the cover, fancy-ass paper, and foil sequential numbering. Fancy, eh?

The breakdown of the initial campaign amount needed to publish Postmortem :
COST TO PRINT/SHIP 500 BOOKS - $3,169.96
SEQUENTIAL FOILING (EACH BOOK STAMPED WITH A UNIQUE NUMBER) - $100
PRINTS - $100
SHIPPING MATERIALS FOR REWARDS - $300
SHIPPING OF REWARDS - $1000
FEES - $600
If we surpass our initial goal I will put up stretch goals to make screen prints and more books. A major stretch goal would be to re-print last years POSTPARTUM in the same format.
The kickstarter will be up for 30 days. The turnaround time to print the books is:
– 2 weeks prepress
– 3 weeks productions time
– 6 weeks shipping
I’ll need a few weeks to prep rewards and get them all sent so this means backers should start receiving rewards 12 weeks after the kickstarter ends .
To keep the campaign goal as low as possible I’ve decided to simply offer the book and art from the book. No t-shirts, mugs, stuffed animals, or watches. I do have a limited tier of commissioned art available though.
Risks and challenges
Well, really there are very few. I have used Kickstarter to fund two previous projects successfully (and with happy backers). I have locked in the price with the printer. The artwork is finished and the book is designed. There could be delays in the printing process or shipping which would be unforeseen. There is also always the risk that I could die before this project is completed, at which point I will probably no longer be concerned with money and art or publishing this book. So…there’s that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
