CASSIDY RED is an exciting, ambitious, independent feature film that is being made as part of the MFA directing program at UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television. It's a revisionist western- a period piece rooted in the tradition of it its forebears but committed to a contemporary artistic voice. The finished product will be submitted as the director's thesis requirement in advance of an anticipated festival run.
The budget, while modest, has been conceived with an eye for independent feature parameters while still accommodating the resources required to properly tell a period story and make sure our team is working in a safe but efficient environment. Most of our crew will be volunteering their time to a potentially grueling 18 day production schedule. They're truly an amazing, dedicated, and insanely talented group of artisans.
Most of our funding for the film will come from private investments, student loan advances, departmental awards and incentives from UCLA's Film program, and "in kind" donations. But the $20,000 we're seeking from this campaign represents a substantial piece of our overall budget and whether or not we reach our goal will potentially determine if we are able to push forward with our projected shooting schedule beginning in August of this year.
The $20,000 comprises our location and housing budget- paying for access to the amazing production resources at "Old Tucson" studios in Southern Arizona as well as providing room and board to cast and crew, most of whom will be traveling to Arizona from out of state.
Risks and challenges
Any independent film production is an uphill battle. The biggest challenges when mounting projects such as these are ALWAYS going to be time and money- two elements that tend to travel in tandem and collide with one another violently, throwing off sparks that can set fire to a budget and derail a production.
As such, none of us are embarking on this journey lightly. We're optimistic realists and we've assembled a team of young professionals in the key creative positions whose skills compliment one another while keeping each other in check:
Myself, as writer & director, producer Brooks Yang, producer Suz Curtis, and Cinematographer Julia Swain have many years of experience working in every corner of the film industry from lowliest PA on the totem pole to being the creative heads of large productions. Between then four of us we have logged time working not just on set but in writer's rooms, at prestigious talent agencies, in world-renowned camera houses and multi-million dollar post production facilities. We have a structural understanding of the business from top to bottom but our passion is in the production of narrative work that inspires us. That's exactly what CASSIDY RED represents to this team- a chance to make the kind of film we'd like to see.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
