About

Do you recognise the following game?

Calico Museum of Textiles - c.1834
Calico Museum of Textiles - c.1834

Chances are you do!

Whether you know it as Snakes & Ladders or Chutes & Ladders, did you know that the origins of this timeless classic are believed to be over 2000 years old?

Surprised to find an ancient version of this game known as Moksha Patam (Ladder to Salvation) in an old antique shop in India, I set out on a journey of a lifetime through Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh & Gujarat to research and reproduce the original game.

          The Journey

After months of travel, numerous books and journals scoured, professional translators hired, many hours of research online, teachers consulted and thousands of games played here's how Moksha Patam can be summed up:

Each of the 72 squares of the Moksha Patam game board is the essence of thousands of years of self exploration and represents an aspect of human consciousness or inner state of being.

From the physical plane which represents the six passions of the mind to the absolute plane where we begin and end with liberation the player goes on a journey which gives them an insight into their own state of being throughout their spiritual evolution.

Not only is Moksha Patam a spiritual game, it is also an interactive map of the cosmos, a didactic tool and an object of art. The player can intuitively grasp what could otherwise be a boring lecture, years of study, or lifetimes of experiences in a fun game.

          Next

The oldest, legible game board found was translated with the help of multiple translators and definitions of each square discussed with multiple teachers.

An authentic game board was reproduced accompanied with flashcards which provide an explanation for each field making this ancient and profound game easy for anyone to understand the basics of.

To keep the game as close to the oldest version found, the decision was made to print the board on fabric. This provided the additional benefits of increased durability, vibrant colours and greater portability which will hopefully spark discussion, self-reflection and encourage spontaneous mediation anywhere!

          Gameplay Summary

Most of you are already familiar with the rules of snakes and ladders and whilst the majority of the rules are the same there are a few differences with the original version.

First of all four things are required to play; the board, a symbol such as a ring that is personal to the player and can fit in the square, a die and the flashcards.

All players start in square 68, already in cosmic consciousness. In order to start the game, the player must role a 6. Following a 6 the player touches square 1 (Janma) and moves directly to square 6, delusion.

When the players symbol lands on the base of an arrow they ascend to the tip, when they land on the head of a snake they descend to the bottom of the tail.

Once the player returns to square 68 they have the decision to stop playing or continue, return to earth by means of landing on square 72 and helping others reach their goal.

1 x Die - Authentic wooden die.

1 x Set of Flashcards for Each Field - Each field is the essence of thousands of years of self exploration. It would be impossible to cover the depth of detail behind each square  in the space of one card.  The aim of each of the 80 flash cards (72 for each square, 8 for each row) is to provide a simple explanation of each field making it easy for the player to bring their consciousness to contemplate each square for as long as they are there.
