Stretch Goal #2: MORE ART
We did it! We raised enough to produce a series of four novellas in 2013. Thank you, so much, for all of your support.
We want to use the time we have left to fund more art. More interior art in our books, more money to our artists. If you haven’t ordered through our Kickstarter yet, and would like to support our art, please do so now. Every additional dollar we collect will go directly to our artists.
Stretch Goal #1: Novellas
In the first week of our Kickstarter campaign, we met our initial goal. We successfully raised $2500 to pay the authors involved in FISH and BIBLIOTHECA FANTASTICA, our next two anthologies. With three weeks left, we're pleased to announce our first stretch goal, designed to cover the cost of producing the first year in a line of speculative fiction novellas.
If we can raise an additional $1500, bringing our total to $4000, we'll be able to produce four novellas in 2013. Each of these long stories, ranging between 17,500 and 40,000 words, will be released as digital book every three months. At the end of the year, we'll release a full-length ebook which includes all four stories, and we'll offer a print collection of the year's tales as well. We'll also offer a subscription to the year's novellas in advance, so you get them emailed to you on release day without any additional effort on your part.
Why novellas? It's often considered the perfect length for a story, long enough to explore the plot without saying too much. There are awards for outstanding speculative fiction novellas, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Shirley Jackson award. But there are few markets that buy this length of work. We want to be one of them.
Let me introduce you to Dagan Books:
Dagan Books is a small indie press, started in 2010. As owner, publisher, and editor, I work for free and have since the beginning. I founded the company knowing that I'd be volunteering my time in a variety of ways for the first several years so I edit, create book layouts and art, run the website, handle the social media, accounting, set up book reviewers - you name it I probably do it. That's not going to change. Whatever we raise from the Kickstarter will go to funding our projects, 100%. However, when I started the company I was married, with a full-time job, and had the luxury of supporting Dagan Books myself. I was prepared for the typical new business scenario of "lose money in the beginning, get established, and then grow". My circumstances changed, and I find myself a single parent with a much different life than I had before. While I still have the time to donate, I no longer have the income. I know that if we can get a few more titles out, the books themselves will begin to pay for future novels, anthologies, and collections. We just have to get there.
We're hoping to fund a small Kickstarter aimed at helping Dagan Books get out its 2012 titles and prepare for 2013 by paying the contributors up front and allowing a greater percentage of the books' sales to go toward future projects. We see Kickstarter as a way to take pre-orders on our upcoming books in this Internet age where we rarely have customers going into a brick-and-mortar store to pre-order a book anymore. We're also offering other rewards to anyone who wants to contribute but has already bought our books.
However you can help, whether it's by backing our project, or by sharing this Kickstarter with your friends, we appreciate your support. Thank you, so much.
What makes us special?
Dagan Books is a woman-owned and operated publishing company that has made it our mission to seek submissions from a wide range of authors. Because we actively pursue stories from women, people of color, and authors and artists who identify as QUILTBAG, we have been able to put into print amazing fiction that is both breathtakingly well written and different than what you'll see from more traditional publishers.
We represent the young, vibrant, edge of speculative fiction, while still working with established authors that - honestly - make us swoon just a bit. Plus we only publish original stories, no reprints! When you pick up a Dagan Books title, you're getting something unique.
About FISH: What secrets belong only to a fish? Dive in and find out. Edited by Carrie Cuinn and KV Taylor; includes stories from Camille Alexa, Cat Rambo, Ken Liu, Andrew Fuller, Cate Gardner, and many others - learn more at http://daganbooks.com/our-contributors/fish/
About Bibliotheca Fantastica: Edited by Claude Lalumière & Don Pizarro; twenty new fabulous tales of bibliophilic wonder, enchantment, terror, romance, mystery, and adventure… contains stories by Ray Vukcevich, Michael J. DeLuca, Tina Connolly, A.C. Wise, S.J. Hirons and others - learn more at http://daganbooks.com/our-contributors/bibliotheca-fantastica/
When we reach our goal, all backers - no matter what the level of pledge - will be emailed a story from FISH. You'll get to read it before the book is released!
Of course, we have stretch goals:
If we meet our initial goal, we already have a plan in place to introduce a line of science fiction, fantasy, and weird novellas in 2013 (including a great staff of volunteer readers ready to get started), and if the stretch goal for that is met, there's a speculative fiction magazine we've been plotting for some time ... but first we must get FISH and BIBLIOTHECA FANTASTICA into print. They're beautiful, wonderful books, and I can't wait to share them with you.
