The Rest Saving the West. Dx1W is a competition open to developing countries to solve First World problems.

http://designforthefirstworld.com/

We live in a complex world, one full of inequities and wonderful things. Our fellows in the First World have been concerned for a while with us having the major share of the badness, so we thought, why don’t we pay back? After all, their life isn’t problem-free either. And that’s where this competition starts.

We’re calling artists, designers, tinkerers, makers, and thinkers with an idea to participate. Two conditions only: you were born in and live right now in a Developing Country and you are 13 years of age or older.

Developing into what, exactly?

Developing countries are on their way toward development, and we assume that’s a great thing. But let’s stop to consider for a minute whether developed countries are something we want the rest of the world to turn into. Are people in developed countries happier or healthier? Do they live a better life? Do they have a better understanding of nature and live in a better equilibrium with the environment? Do they live in peace?

This is where the competition starts. I'm calling artists, designers, tinkerers, makers, and thinkers born in and living right now in a Developing Country (as defined by the IMF) to design solutions for four main First World problems: obesity, low birth rate and aging population, integration of immigrants and consumerism.

My idea is to shift the dynamic of solution givers and takers and start a conversation in which we all are equal and talking about the same world.

The competition opened on April 1st and will be going on until May 30, a panel of international juries are gonna be reviewing the works.

I am developing this competition as part of my thesis for ITP at NYU and I am looking for funds to help me spread the word of the competition further by translating the website, and to finance the prizes. Apart from the $1000 cash prize, I am proposing an exhibition of the projects in a gallery in NYC (to be determined yet) and a catalog of the exhibition, showcasing the most interesting projects and having essays by members of the jury. The reason for this is that I believe that the proposals submitted for Dx1W should be showcased not only in the virtual world, but in the real one and an exhibit and a catalog will help make sure this ideas endure and perhaps be taken into account when designing new policies.

Thanks for your support.
