About

For quite a few years now I have been heavily involved in the modern tiny house movement. I have met incredible people with even more incredible stories. Some live in traditional tiny houses on wheels while others choose to call school buses, converted vans, catamarans, high wall tents, and even yurts, home. No matter what the style though there is one thing all houses are. They are shelters and they - along with their owners' stories - are the inspiration for this book.

"Shelter" is a song of life in a tiny home. Each verse is sung by a different voice, but together it becomes an anthem to the liberating power of simplicity, non-conformity, and paying as you go.

WHAT ISN'T THE BOOK ABOUT?

This is not a “how to” manual about building a tiny house. There are no floor plans, and very little talk of which composting toilet is best, or how to find a parking spot.  This book never was about building a dream house.

WHAT IS THE BOOK ABOUT?

"Shelter" is a conversation, not about building our dream house, but about creating our dream life.  These stories will inspire and remind you that we can live outside of conformity - no matter what our homes look like.  We can minimize the mundane things of life - whether our homes are large or small.  This isn’t about selling everything and buying a tiny house, it’s about living intentionally.  And that will look different for each of us.

When we own the things that serve our life purpose, we have enough.  Every belonging beyond that is a burden.  And when we minimize the mundane things of life, it opens up so much glorious space in our lives for the things that matter most - like meaning, purpose, and mission.

WHY DO I NEED YOUR HELP?

I am raising funds to release this book from its dark secret vault into the world. This includes paying skilled people to perform the final copy edit, design, printing of the book, so that we can put it in your hands.  Something this good is meant to be shared.

I appreciate anyone who is able to get involved at any amount. The more people who support this book, the more resources I can pour into the publishing value.

ABOUT CARMEN

Carmen and her Austrian
Carmen and her Austrian

I’m Carmen Shenk, and I am the owner of a micro-publishing company dedicated to simplicity, self care, and spirituality.  I saw the immense potential of putting together stories from people who have all gone tiny in very different ways.  There is a wide diversity of experience here, with many common themes.  We’ve got a young married couple, a couple with very young children, and couple with an older child, and my Austrian husband and I are old enough to be grandparents.  We are single, married, divorced and remarried. We are hoping to adopt, raising our kids, and child-free-by-choice.  We represent the range of micro-living from an RV, tiny house, bus, van, and other interesting options; a diversity of styles to meet different needs.  We have a tiny house festival host, a tiny house builder, social media darlings, and now all of us are tiny house authors.  Some of us live tiny at the time of print, and others of us have taken everything we learned living tiny, and expanded it into our small homes, often complete with thriving entrepreneurial endeavors.  In short, we sing very different verses of the song, but the chorus of this anthem remains the same.

Somewhere in this group of interesting people is someone who can answer a question you’ve had about tiny living, and whether or not you could live such an “outside the box” life.  Together, we say firmly and without apology: “Yes!  You can do it!”  We know you can, because we have.

I don’t want you to go into living tiny with stars in your eyes, and that’s why I’ve encouraged each author to keep it real.  I think you’ll find the authenticity in these pages absolutely refreshing.

After converting "Navi", a 2004 Thomas Freightliner that used to be a yellow school bus, and starting NavigationNowhere.com, Michael and his frequent road guests are exploring North America and helping people create community and build a simpler, more meaningful life while exploring the world.

Daniel & Rachel Messick - The couple behind BananaVanAdventures.com are living the van life in their bright yellow 2003 Dodge Sprinter van. Risks and challenges

I am publishing this collection myself. I will have to be author, editor, designer, publisher, marketer, and shipper, all in one. However, we should be able to launch the book for the minimum funding value of $3,000. However, the book will be in the best position to spread far and wide if all of the Limited Editions are purchased.
