Update: Reward Matching
Your support can now make twice the impact. We have a backer that has offered to match any new backers (or current backers who increase their pledge) between now and Friday, April 11th. So, for example, if you back at the $25 level, another backer will match your pledge!
4/5/14 - Note from author, Joe Bastian:
It’s funny and strange that as an author, I might have a hard time writing something like this. I’ve never put this down in words before or even spoken about it, but maybe it’s time.
We’re coming to end of our Kickstarter campaign and we’re far short of our goal. At this point though, it’s more important that you know why this project means so much to me.
When I lost my job in 2008, it was scary as hell. I felt like I was looking down into a dark abyss with no idea how far down it went and no prospects for getting around it. I tried to put on a happy face and fake it, but my family knew and still they supported me. A wife and four kids is a big responsibility and now I felt that weight more than ever.
Over the next few months, we almost lost everything. We were threatened with foreclosure, sued for overdue credit cards and had our minivan repossessed at 1:30am in the morning. We were not alone as our story was playing out in myriad homes and houses around the state and throughout the country.
Then I discovered the Nain Rouge. In a weird way, the legend found me. There was something about the story of a harbinger of doom that seemed very appropriate to our troubling times.
It was writing about this legend that saved my sanity. I would sit for many hours in coffee shops and libraries, scouring the internet for jobs and then diving deep into my manuscript. In a time of hopelessness, the act of writing gave me hope. And as I wrote the first book in the series, I wrote it with the thought that others might find hope in the words I’d written.
That is why this project is so important. It’s a folk tale and legend, yes. But it’s much more than that. For I believe that stories have the power to change us and in doing so, change the world.
This is one story that changed my life. And I believe in my heart of hearts that it could do the world good to hear it.
Thanks for listening and being such an important part of my life and this project.

The Nain Rouge (Red Dwarf) made his home near the narrow straits in an area the later French settlers were to name “Detroit”.
As the Steward of Straits, the Nain Rouge was responsible for keeping harmony and balance in the natural world near the straits of the great river.
It was not until the Antoine de Mothe Cadillac and the French settlers arrived that the Nain Rouge began causing trouble.
At first, the Nain Rouge was cordial and diplomatic, but a quarrel began and soon turned into an angry brawl. The Nain Rouge was beaten mercilessly during the fight and fled from the settlement in anger.
It is said that as he ran away, a curse was flung from his lips onto the entire region of Detroit. The curse, it is rumored, befalls anyone who creates evil of their own will, empowering the Nain Rouge with greater and greater strength throughout the centuries.
Now, the Nain Rouge is often seen just before a tragic event; a harbinger of doom that revels in the downfall of humanity. Recently, there have been many more sightings of the Nain Rouge. He seems to be growing in power. Some say the times are bad. Some say it is only getting worse. Perhaps, the day of reckoning is upon us…
The times are hard and getting harder by the minute and there is an evil, enduring legend deep within the city. Stories tell of the Nain Rouge - the Red Dwarf - who roams the streets, a harbinger of doom.
For more than 300 years, reported sightings of the Nain Rouge have been escalating. Now, times are tough and only seem to be getting worse.
In this 80-page, full-color graphic novel, you're introduced to Elly and Tom, two average middle schoolers on a field trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts. In a flash, they are wrapped up in a mystery of evil and intrigue that has been brewing for centuries. Fate has hurled these young teens in front of one of the most evil creatures ever to walk the earth ... the Nain Rouge.
Can Elly and Tom do anything to save the city and themselves? Or has the time of the Nain Rouge finally come?
The Nain Rouge Project started out as a trilogy of books by Josef Bastian. The first two of which are currently published and the third will be published in the fall of 2014.
Believing that stories can be told in many different ways, Joe decided it was time to really bring the legend of the Nain Rouge to life in full color through the creation of this new graphic novel.
Knowing that stories need many storytellers, Joe assembled the team that's currently writing, illustrating and designing the Nain Rouge graphic novel.
There are a variety of ways you can back this project and receive some great rewards! We need your help to create the Nain Rouge graphic novel, the first in the Cryptofolk genre. So please become one of our storytellers and find the reward level that works for you to back this project today!
UPDATE: 3 new reward levels have been added! Check out the new CHARACTER DELUXE, CHARACTER PREMIUM and DINNER IN DETROIT packages that were just added! See all the rewards in the right sidebar of the page.
Risks and challenges
Fortunately, there are few "deal-breakers" involved with this project. The story is written and we have a great illustrator, Patrick McEvoy, already on board. Patrick has already completed the character sketches, the visual development of the Nain Rouge and the first 4 pages of the graphic novel.
The only potential delays would be:
1. Printing delays are possible, but unlikely. If we foresee that the release date of the published book would be pushed back, we will release the digital versions of the chapters as they are completed to our backers only. We’ll also issue monthly updates.
2. If Patrick McEvoy, our illustrator, were to be besieged by the Nain Rouge himself, we would need additional time to replace Patrick with someone who can better handle the evil curse of the Nain Rouge. Fortunately, the curse was placed on Detroit, so Patrick should be safe in California.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
