This is only the beginning!
Treeson Spring Water was created to offer a sustainable alternative to the plastic water bottles that are sold by the billions every year and go un-recycled only to end up in landfills.
Our mission is to create 100% natural, sustainable products, systems and technologies that raise environmental awareness and empower people to make choices that help protect and preserve the planet today.
Did you know?:
- Less than 30% of plastic drinks bottles get recycled in the USA. What doesn't get recycled ends up in landfills or even gets shipped overseas.
- At Treeson, we take our bottles back after you're done with them and we use those returned bottles to generate clean energy.
- Our mail-back return program is free for our customers and it supports the United States Postal Service. Just drop your bottles in the mailbox and we'll take care of it thereafter.
- We plant a tree for every bottle we sell. It helps offset the carbon footprint of our product and restores rainforest habitats.
- Our bottles are made using only the good stuff - plant-based, non-gmo materials, right here in the USA.
- No chemicals in our bottles means no funky aftertaste. It is healthier and tastier too.
- We're making going green an easy choice that is convenient and does not cost any more than what you buy now.
Join our team today and be a part of making this happen. We've created some very cool rewards to say thank you, so please pledge whatever you can afford today and be a part of Team Treeson.
Read on if you would like to learn more about how this all got started:
Five years ago, while living in Costa Rica, I took my wife and daughter out to the beach for the day. While walking down a beautiful, pristine beach I saw an old plastic water bottle. I picked it up to drop in the trash and then I came across another, and another, and another. By the end of the walk we had picked up all we could carry. Later that night, troubled by what I had seen, I did some research and found out about the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” a swirling vortex of waste plastic floating in the middle of the ocean, larger than the great state of Texas, and growing at an alarming rate every year. It was a problem I had been unaware of until that day and I decided that I would have to do something about it.
Plastic water bottles exist because they serve a need. They are cheap, they are convenient and, as far as most people are aware, they get recycled. The stark reality though is that of the 50 billion plastic water bottles sold in the U.S. every year less than twenty percent actually ever get recycled. The remaining 40 billion end up in landfills, rivers and oceans around the world. So much of the “recycling” we so diligently and responsibly sort at home still ends up in a landfill or gets put on a barge and becomes somebody else’s problem. This system isn’t working and we need new solutions if we are going to stem the flow of waste plastic into our environment.
To change an industry the size of bottled water - a $6.7-billion-and-growing market in the US alone - we realized that we had to work from within. When we spoke with shoppers, they mostly expressed concern about water bottles and the desire to have better options. We decided to create a solution that could empower shoppers and offer that choice at the point of purchase. By offering a truly sustainable alternative to established bottled water brands (at no additional expense), we can inspire the whole industry to move to fully sustainable practices. When our product is a success it will get their attention. When people start to buy our water instead and the big guys see an impact on their bottom line, it will motivate the industry leaders to change. When they want to do that, we'll be there to show them how.
Our challenge was twofold. We absolutely wanted our bottle to be made using sustainable, plant-based materials. We wanted it to be the greenest single-use bottle ever made. It had to be as biodegradable as possible and we wanted to avoid using any petrochemical products in it.
This was just the beginning though as we also needed to solve the problem about what happened to the bottles after they are used. If recycling wasn’t working, we had to come up with our own solution. We needed our own system. We needed to create a business model that other companies could follow and show how a company can implement its own recycling program.
The solution we came up with is actually very simple. Instead of dropping your empty bottle into a garbage can, you simply mail the bottle back to us. It’s convenient, it's free and it supports the oldest government institution in the United States of America, the USPS, the organization with the greenest fleet on the streets!
As for what happens to the bottles when we get them back. I had spent some time previously working on waste-to-energy projects and was familiar with the technologies being developed. We have a machine that turns waste material into a gas that powers a generator. This creates clean electricity for us to make new bottles and, because our bottles are entirely plant-based, we do not have the emissions problems that regular plastic would present.
The design of the bottle itself was inspired by my daughter. Growing up in Costa Rica, she loves the outdoors and is always picking up stuff and bringing it back home with her. One of those souvenirs, a perfectly shaped leaf, ended up becoming the design inspiration for the shape of our bottle. We call it "The Leaf Bottle” and its leaf shape allows it to collapse flat when empty for easy mailing. It is made entirely from plant-based materials. It is 100% toxin-free and is certified free of any GMOs (many "bioplastics" are made from GMO corn). Our labels are made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials.
The final part of the equation was the actual water itself. While living in Costa Rica, I travelled to springs and water sources and started to study water in its natural environment. I trekked to pristine springs in the mountains and learned everything I could.
Water is truly magical. Our own bodies are about 60% water and it is vital to our survival. Pure spring water is of course the best and I was surprised to discover that many of the popular brands on the shelf are merely municipal tap water, filtered and bottled in urban cities with some fancy marketing thrown in!
Now, a lot folks use refillable canteens today that they fill up at home or at work with filtered tap water or from the office water cooler. Refillable canteens are doing a good thing by helping reduce waste plastic and, if you happen to live in an area with great drinking water, please continue using your canteen. More power to you! Over time, the more people who use refillable bottles, the better it will be for reducing plastic pollution.
Right now, we are simply trying to create a more sustainable alternative to the plastic bottles that are already being sold by the billions. Thanks to fracking and industrial or agricultural run-off, not everyone has access to 100% safe water. That is a real problem and for a small percentage of people it makes bottled water a necessity. For others, it is a convenience or they have been misled into thinking tap water is bad for them somehow. The point being, bottled water is probably here to stay for the foreseeable future and sales show no signs of slowing. This is why we are making the controversial move of working from within the industry. Yes, we are going to be criticized for being "another bottled water" but, realistically this is how we can change things. Whatever you feel about bottled water, please understand that our motives are pure and we will endeavor to maintain complete transparency always. Our mission is to stop the plastic waste ending up in the ocean and we will continue to use our product to advance that goal until the day it is obsolete and we have eliminated the need for it entirely.
After studying water in its natural environment, I got to know water in the wild and, in doing so, I got to know the rainforest. Much like a fruit or a vegetable, once “harvested” water starts to deteriorate so we also needed to figure out how to replace what is lost in transit after you take it out of its natural environment. We did it! We start with pristine spring water. We then purify it via a system modeled after how water is filtered in the rainforest canopy. We then add back the vital nutrients and the electrolytes lost during purification. We also add oxygen to return it to the state it was in at the source.
Our pilot program is using a water source in Costa Rica, where I was living when I started on this journey. Our initial production run will use this water but we are in the process of identifying regional water sources around the US so that we can quickly localize production to reduce the overall distances travelled by the product. Our Costa Rica source will then only serve Costa Rica. Our clean energy facility will be centrally located in Texas at first but we also plan to set up local bottle return and clean energy facilities as we roll out, again to minimize our carbon footprint as much as possible. We are working to reduce the size of the clean energy machines with a goal to one day perhaps have them on-site at schools, office campuses and perhaps even homes. We have big ideas and ambitious plans. Water is just the start and we are working on other products that are currently packaged in a wasteful manner.
The big idea was originally to come up with a “cradle to cradle” product unlike any other. Our bottles have a complete lifecycle with a system that means we get clean energy and our bottles are not polluting. This is something we are very proud of and we hope others will follow our example.
However, we recognize that millions of people around the world do not have access to clean drinking water sources at all. We wanted to try to do something about that too and that was when we came up with the really big idea. Using our product sales to help restore water sources around the world so people could once again get water from natural sources that used to be pure and clean.
Trees are remarkable water filters. If you want to design the perfect solution, you can't go wrong looking at how Mother Nature solved the problem. With that in mind, for every bottle sold we will plant one tree. This means that not only will you be helping get rid of waste and help us create clean energy when you buy a bottle of Treeson, but you also be helping to restore rainforest habitats along creeks and rivers thus ensuring that there will be plenty of fresh water and clean air for years to come.
We have assembled a great team to bring this project to life. Each of us brings something unique to the table and also brings years of experience that will help get the job done.
That’s me on the far left - the crazy idea guy who hasn't stopped in five years and won't stop until we make this happen!
Jason is on my right, and is my right hand man, my enabler, an incredibly talented designer, packaging & strategic branding visionary.
Then, to Jason's right, is Halferty - our resident Leed-certified architect and all around clean-energy specialist.
To Jeff's right, is Hazel, our health and wellness expert and all around beverage industry guru. From R&D to manufacturing to distribution, she knows the business inside out.
Finally, of course, there's you!
It has taken four long years to get to this point. Collectively, we have put our hearts and souls into making this happen and we are at the point where we can go into production as soon as we can afford it.
We have a fully functional, working prototype. All of the design and 3D "CAD" modeling work is ready to go forward into production.
We have our water formula ready to go and a co-packer ready to bottle it in our amazing bottle. We plan to start out and launch the brand and the concept with natural spring water. After that we can expand into flavored waters and other beverages. The opportunity is enormous and we will be able to provide shoppers with better choices for many products. We just need your help to start the ball rolling.
Our main expenses from here on out are going to be in creating our production and infrastructure resources. In simple terms, we need your help to give us the financial resources for the machining of our final bottle molds, to do our first production run and also to get our warehouse and distribution space in order to set up shop and obtain the equipment we need to turn this idea into action.
We have put everything we have into getting this product ready to launch and out into the world. In collaboration with our manufacturing partners, we have put a realistic timeline in place for when everything should happen and we are all ready to roll as soon as we have the financial resources to do so. For this product to do what it was designed to do we need to put it in your hands and we promise that we will move heaven and earth to make that happen.
We hope that you are excited by our vision and we are grateful for your time and support. You know who we are and what we are trying to do so all that remains is one last question to answer…

Risks and challenges
Nobody has ever attempted what we are doing here and there are a lot of moving parts related to doing it. We have spent the last four years planning for this day and, with our combined experiences in the various fields involved, we have tried to anticipate the bumps we may encounter along the way and develop contingencies accordingly.
In short: if it's related to us making this happen you can rest assured that we have probably already thought of the potential problem, worked on it or planned for it.
At this point it is primarily just the not so insignificant matter of finally having the funds available to put things into motion that hold us back.
We acknowledge that there are a lot of pieces that are out of our control that could impact our ability to deliver as promised. We feel that we have picked the best strategic partners to help us create this and we know they share our vision and commitment to making this a reality. Life does happen though so, to plan for the worst case scenario, we have tried to have two vendors or a back-up plan in place wherever possible.
If something does come up, you guys will be the first to know and you can bet we will not stop until we deliver as promised.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
