One common question people ask about a head-up display system is: “Does it work under sunlight”? Frankly, most head-up displays don’t. Carloudy, however, is unique and works GREAT under bright sunlight. It even has very low power consumption. Once it’s charged, the battery can last more than two weeks. Also you never have to deal with messy wires in your car, as Carloudy operates with no wires!
Imagine talking to your car, and having all of the driving information in your smartphone magically pop up in front of you! With Carloudy, we bring the future of driving to your windshield.
Driving with your smartphone is convenient, but it's not safe. According to National Safety Counsel’s statistics, cell phone use while driving causes 1.6 million crashes each year, or 1 in every 4 accidents. People increase their likelihood of being in an accident by 400 ~ 1000% when using their smartphones while driving.
So, it looks like we have to pick either safety or convenience. Or do we?
Carloudy is a head-up display (HUD) that’s designed to provide drivers with the necessary information for their on-road experience. Simply place Carloudy on your dashboard while it connects to your smartphone via bluetooth. With its transparent display and voice control, Carloudy makes driving with smartphone safer and more convenient.
Here are a few quick highlights about Carloudy:
- Information is displayed directly in front of you on your windshield
- Turn by turn navigation from Google Maps
- The system is completely voice-controlled
- It works perfectly in the daylight and at night.
- Carloudy is completely wireless and can be put on any vehicle in seconds.
- Long-lasting battery that only needs to be charged every two weeks
"I found Carloudy's imagery easy to view and very usable ... visible in bright sunlight. The navigation interaction was also quite good in this demonstration." -- CNET
"... clearly visible, even in high ambient light. Carloudy portable HUD runs for weeks on a single charge ..." -- Gizmag
How does Carloudy work?
1. The device is automatically connected to your iPhone/Android via Bluetooth. It also overwrites the Bluetooth media controller on your steering wheel so your phone never needs to come out of your pocket.
2. The system utilizes existing applications on your phone like Google Maps. Our Carloudy app is also integrated with other APIs such as Yelp, ParkWhiz, etc.
3. When you talk to your car, our app listens to your voice command, interprets what you need and delivers the relevant information.
Carloudy is smart. Carloudy has the ability to navigate you to your destination, provide you with the speed limit, find the closest parking nearby and display the rates, find you local restaurants with their ratings, gives you traffic information and more.
Carloudy in action:
Let's take a closer look with the video clips below. Please note: these videos were shot straight from a DSLR under bright sunlight.
We did not add any special effects, coloring, light adjustments, or contrast enhancements. These are just what you see directly through the camera's lens.
Set your destination
This video was taken with sunlight shining directly on the windshield. The car wash icon on the bottom-left corner indicates that it is a good time for a car wash based on weather forecast.
Find the nearest gas station
The circle in the video shows the speed limit while the number outside of the circle displays your current speed.
Find a good coffee shop
You can use your Bluetooth controllers on the steering wheels to browse the options and select the destination. Carloudy will recommend coffee options using Yelp ratings.
Show traffic information
Find nearby parking garages
Carloudy recommends nearby, available parking garages with their hourly rates.
Perhaps you’re wondering how this differs from a standard GPS system or your smartphone. Carloudy is made for driving. We designed everything to optimize the on-road experience. With our innovative transparent display and voice input and mobile app integration, Carloudy is both a lot safer and smarter.
At Cognitive AI Technologies, we are passionate about research that shows how artificial intelligence can augment people’s cognitive abilities. Our co-founder, Dr. Kong, whose Ph.D. dissertation research on visual/spatial cognition was funded by Office of Naval research, led the design of Carloudy. Built upon the same scientific studies and theories of how human cognition uses external visual information to facilitate spatial reasoning in highly demanding mission-critical tasks, such as navigating a Navy vessel or fly a fighter jet, we created Carloudy, the world’s first wireless, smart, head-up display for every car. We believe your safety behind the wheel is equally important as those in a cockpit.
Here’s a chart that compares the differences between a standard navigation system, a smartphone, and Carloudy.
Finally, a smart HUD that actually works under sunlight!
When buying a head-up display (HUD), the very first question you should ask is: "Does it work under bright sunlight?"
There are a few ideas of head-up display designs floating around, but when you ask this question, most designers of these head-up displays will avoid answering.
With our patent pending Carloudy design, we can confidently answer "YES" to this question. Carloudy works great under bright sunlight (and under other light conditions).
At nighttime, the ambient light sensor activates the LED back-lit for the display.
We didn’t build Carloudy just for our sake.
We built it for the world.
We’ve been using (and enjoying) Carloudy for our own driving experiences and now we want to share it with all of you. The product is ready for mass production. All we need is your support. Back us today so we can put Carloudy on every driver’s dashboard. Let’s work together to make driving safer and smarter.

Risks and challenges
We went through multiple designs and prototypes - not to mention countless hours of testing - before we finalized our current design. We think you're going to really like it!
Since 2014, we've been actively working with a highly respected, world-leading IT manufacture in Asia that assembles several well-known U.S. consumer electronics brands. We have visited this partner's factories many times and thoroughly tested our product's samples from the production line long before we signed our manufacturing contract.
We’ve done our very best to forecast demand and created a solid production plan with our Asian manufacturer.
Supply Chain Risk
Despite our scalable production line, component delays and unexpected shortages can occur from our suppliers. If this happens, we’ll be sure to keep you informed and work to quickly solve the problem.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
