HAIKUDOS TO YOU FOR HELPING US REACH OUR GOAL! SO...WHAT'S NEXT? STRETCH GOALS!
Haikudos all around! We reached our goal on April 1, 2016! So what now? Well, since there's still a little more than a week left, let's keep going! Kickstarter lets creators implement "stretch goals," which can enhance the existing project and campaign rewards or even push beyond the original project. We'll get funded even if we don't reach our stretch goals, but it's nice to aim high, right?
One note here -- the "extra" money that comes with overfunded campaigns doesn't go straight into the creators' pockets. Since we now have more rewards to fulfill, the money goes toward that, as well as to other start-up costs beyond the printing of Haiku Austin.
$9,000 - At $9k we'll be able to add a new t-shirt option, what we're calling "The 575," as well as five more designs for our notecards.
SHIRTS: You've seen "The 575" in one of our previous updates. Backers at the $100 Haiku Chic level and up will get to choose between "The Retro" and "The 575." We'll also have these shirts and more available when we start selling in retail shops around Austin.
NOTECARDS: We'd previously planned to offer just five designs of our notecards, but reaching our stretch goal will allow us to print an additional five designs. So backers at the $60 Haiku Duo level will receive one card each of ten different designs, along with their two copies of the book.
$10,000 - at $10k we'll be able to start work on the next book in the series, Hill Country Haiku. I've already begun sorting through photos and writing poems for this book. It needs to be designed, though, and that takes $$.
Please keep sharing via social media and spreading the haiku love. And thank you for your continued support!
WHY HAIKU AUSTIN?
This book is a labor of love combining three of my favorite things: photography, poetry and the city of Austin, Texas.
I moved to Austin in 1992 and loved it from Day One. I still remember my first plunge into Barton Springs, my first attempt at two-stepping (at the now-defunct Dallas Night Club) and my first Shady Grove margarita.
Haiku Austin is a 144-page tour of -- and tribute to -- all the things that make this place so wonderful and weird. It's for everyone who's visited or lived here who wants an Austin keepsake, for themselves or to give as a gift.
Heck, why not haiku?!
I think of the poems in Haiku Austin, which follow a 17-syllable schemata (5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second, 5 syllables in the third), as a refreshing little snack of poetry. They deliver a flavorful bite with a snappy bit of a finish. Along with the vibrant photos, it's a nice and tasty pairing.
WHAT EXACTLY ARE CONTRIBUTORS BACKING?
The funds will help pay for design and printing costs for my first 1,500 copies of Haiku Austin. Because I wanted control over the quality of the product, I didn't use a print-on-demand platform. I also anticipate this being the first in a series of books and product lines, so you're Kickstarting me into the world of entrepreneurship!
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE KICKSTARTER ENDS?
I'm a glass-half-full kind of gal, so I'm assuming that you'll all love this and it'll get completely funded! Then, once the books are printed in late April and backers' copies have shipped, I'll be selling Haiku Austin online and at various retailers and events around Austin. You'll find it at local, indie shops like BookPeople and A-Town, and at events like the Texas Book Festival. I'll also be selling additional Haiku Austin products -- including the t-shirts and notecards offered here as rewards -- in partnership with my dear friend, the lovely and talented designer Anne Stevenson.
CAN YOU GIVE MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE REWARDS?
All backers at the HAIKU SIMPLE level will receive a postcard chosen from among four different designs and sent via USPS.
The book, available for backers starting at the HAIKU AUSTIN level, is 7" x 7" and has 144 full-color pages. Since I haven't printed it yet, I don't have a copy to show you (other than this picture of the cover), but the photos, postcards and notecards on this site and in the video give you a taste of what you'll find inside the book.
At the HAIKU DUO level, along with two copies of the book, backers will receive a set of ten 4" x 6" folded notecards (with envelopes), featuring five different photos and corresponding haiku. (Two of the five designs pictured here.) 4/2/16 UPDATE: If we reach the $9k stretch goal, backers will receive a set of ten different notecard designs.
At the HAIKU CHIC rewards level, along with books and notecards, backers will receive a Haiku Austin t-shirt, available in men's and women's sizes. It's a flattering grey/blue color, in a poly/cotton/rayon blend that's lightweight and soft with a little stretch to keep its shape. 4/2/16 UPDATE: If we reach the $9k stretch goal, backers will get to choose between two t-shirt designs. (See "The 575" above.)
Well, folks, that's all for now. I'll be posting updates throughout the course of the Haiku Austin campaign, as Anne and I finesse the book design and prep for printing. Thanks for watching and reading and supporting this project.
Risks and challenges
I'm printing this book at a well-respected Austin-based company, Ginny's One-Touch Printing, on an off-set press. We'll print a limited first run of books in late April. I'll be shipping books (and additional rewards) out in May.
I don't anticipate any problems occurring with the printing, but if there were, this might cause a slight delay in the delivery of the book. For Kickstarter backers, I'm signing each book before I send it out, so if I developed hand cramps, that might also cause a delay...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
