NEW CARL KING / SIR MILLARD MULCH / DR. ZOLTAN ALBUM?!
I’m back, I’m making a record.
Hello, this is Carl King. In 2005, I released an album under the name Sir Millard Mulch called How To Sell The Whole F#@!ing Universe To Everybody, with guests Virgil Donati, Morgan Agren, and Nils Frykdahl of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. In 2010, I released an album under the name Dr. Zoltan Øbelisk called “Why I Am So Wise, Why I Am So Clever, And Why I Write Such Good Songs” with guests Marco Minnemann and virtuoso pianist Lalle Larsson.
I’ve done a bunch of stuff since then. Wrote a book (So, You're A Creative Genius... Now What?), made a documentary (Morgan Agren's Conundrum), made a cartoon (A Business Lesson With Frank Zappa), etc.
Unfortunately, I took a long break from music. But it wasn't my fault! I contracted PTSD (not an STD mind you!) that I got from a car accident shortly after moving to Los Angeles. Over time, it caused me to become very sensitive to sound, so much that I could not even listen to music. But after recovering enough to make music again, I’m back.
THE NEW ALBUM!
For the past year, secretly, in seclusion, I have been composing and recording a new record called GRAND ARCHITECTS OF THE UNIVERSE. It’s a big 45-minute instrumental piece of music combining heroic metal and impressionist classical orchestral composition. I’ve been studying film scoring and orchestration through Berklee Online and am applying those techniques to my own music. It’s a continuation of my interest in Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Bartok, Ravel, and film composers like John Williams and Danny Elfman.
I’ve asked Travis Orbin, known for his work with Periphery and YøTøb — a meticulous and complex metal drummer, to provide the main drum tracks for the record. If I can raise the money, I’ll be flying out to Maryland for drum tracking with him at his studio in December. Otherwise, I'll be forced to dig out my back issues of Drum Programmer Magazine and ruin the record by clicking my mouse 45,000 times.
In addition to Mr. Orbin, I’m going to have some drum tracks from Thomas Lang, Dave Elitch, Morgan Agren, and Marco Minnemann.
Scheila Gonzalez from Zappa Plays Zappa is going to play saxophones. Lalle Larsson from Sweden will play some piano and keyboard. And I’m also going to hire some soloists for violin, cello, and classical vocalists.
I’ve also asked *name garbled* to contribute some guitar solos. But not TOO many!
Other famous weirdo cameos will be confirmed as this campaign progresses.
To my knowledge, Dave Weckl will not appear on this album.
AND, I am going back to working with my co-writers HisCheapMoves and LevelNivelo, who helped me with the How To Sell… album concepts and lyrics.
For artwork, I’m going to hire someone to make something in the style of classic science fiction novels.
I need to raise $10k to pay for these super creative and professional musicians & artists to bring this music to life, and more equipment for finishing the recording and mixing. There’s a lot of layers to this music, split between multiple ensembles, and the demos themselves are over 160 tracks of instruments.
My laptop, full of plugins and samples, is getting upset. Just kidding, that’s not my laptop. I mean it IS, my laptop, but...
I also plan to document the process in the form of a behind the scenes mini-documentary of some sort. At the end of the project, I’ll release the recording as a CD and digital download.

Risks and challenges
This album has already been written, and I am halfway done recording my parts for it. So there is very little risk of it not being completed. I have already received commitments from all of the musicians involved, and have started to receive their tracks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
