Quirky Carrots | Toffe Peren
A memory game and high quality photo prints bringing awareness to food waste showing quirky fruits and veggies
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Tue, October 2 2018 10:34 AM UTC +00:00.
Quirky Carrots | Toffe Peren is a project by Annette Behrens & Carina Hesper to bring more awareness to food waste. We are focusing on vegetables and fruit with extraordinary appearances. Due to their different size, form or color those veggies and fruits often are wasted and/or overlooked. We want to change the perception of this important subject.
This year we're starting with the production of a memory game and beautiful high quality photo prints. Additional products, that we will be working on in 2019, are also in the making.
Read more about the memory game and the other rewards below. But first, let's get to our story!
Have you ever seen a cucumber that’s not straight? A carrot with two legs? Or an eggplant that is a triplet? A tomato that looks like siamese twins, or a paprika that looks like a creature from outer space?
Everyone who has ever worked in a garden knows this: most fruit and vegetables grow quite differently than the ones we can buy in the supermarket. In Europe, there used to be laws by which our fruits and vegetables were judged strictly on the way they looked. A fair amount of these laws have been banned, yet for a few fruits and vegetables they are still in existence. A kiwi, for example, is not allowed to have fruits attached to each other and thus you will never find a beautiful kiwi in the shape of a heart at a European grocery store.
Due to these laws, we became more and more used to seeing fruits and vegetables that look like the ones in the grocery store: without any spots or flaws, and identical in size, form and color. Quality seems to be defined as products that all look alike. However, what’s more boring than that? You can barely find the twisted brother of, for instance, the cucumber in the supermarket although taste and nutrients are, of course, the same.
Worldwide an average of 30% of our food goes to waste. A part of this number are those fruits and vegetables that never become part of the foodchain in the first place, due to their different appearance.
We are Annette Behrens and Carina Hesper; we are visual artists and photographers and we want to change the perception of this important subject.
All support, big or small, is greatly appreciated and will help us to produce the memory game, postcard sets and prints. Take a look at our rewards on the right and below!
The memory game will contain 20 sets. The sets will consist of the same kind of vegetable or fruit, but different images with the same background color. We will also include a small booklet with information on which kind of veggies and fruit you see and more information on food waste. The booklet will be written in English and Dutch. The memory game will be printed environmentally friendly and locally at Tienkamp printers in Groningen, The Netherlands.
Each set consists of six A6 postcards with the images you can see below.

We will choose one out of the nine delicious soups made by Kromkommer for your reward such as,e.g., tomato, carrot or sweet potato.
For our project we have partnered up with Kromkommer whose mission it is to save all the fruits and vegetables that otherwise would be wasted because of their looks or overproduction. Kromkommer has years of experience in bringing awareness on this topic to a big variety of people.
Dinner at Instock Restaurant The Hague
A 4 course dinner for 2 persons at Instock restaurant in The Hague. If you don’t eat meat or fish, that’s no problem, there are always vegetarian and vegan options. Does not include drinks.
We have partnered up with Instock whose mission it is to turn food surplus into delicious meals (by the way: besides working on her photography projects, you can also regularly find Carina cooking up a storm in Instock's kitchen). As one of our rewards you can get a tasty dinner at Instock and we are happy to do the launch of our memory game at Instock The Hague.
You could already read about our partners Kromkommer and Instock above. Here we also want you to get to know our other partners: designer Jelle F. Post, and printer Tienkamp who is based in Groningen in the North of The Netherlands.
We are very happy to be collaborating with Jelle on our memory game. Jelle has plenty of experience with book- and printmaking and has worked for clients such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
We are very excited to be joining forces with Tienkamp printers in Groningen. We have very consciously decided to print in The Netherlands, which does make the proces much more expensive but as opposed to printing outside of The Netherlands, we will be in full control of the process. Besides, Tienkamp convinced us with their environmentally printing process. They are one of the very few printer in the Netherlands who use an offset printing process which is not based on water, thus producing much less emissions than with a tradional process. They print with plant based inks, no petroleum to be involved.
How the funds will be used
Foodwaste - what can you do? Five tips
Last but not least: It'is our mission to bring more awareness to food waste (and to eventually reduce it), here are some of our favourite tips to cut it down.
1. Never buy more than you can eat
2. Buy products in the grocery store that have small marks or differ a little bit in appearance. Those are often the first ones to be thrown away because nobody buys them.
3. Ask your local grocery store to start selling misfits, buitenbeentjes or whatever they may be called in your country. We want to start seeing crazy veggies and fruits again!
4.Use apps such as To good to go that help you find food in your city that would otherwise go to waste.
5. Educate yourself :) Together we can save an immense amount of food and resources, not to mention money, if we all start being more aware of the food that we waste.
Risks and challenges
We have already done a big amount of photographing and continue to do so as you read this. Our Designer Jelle F. Post will work on the memory game in September and we will be printing at Tienkamp printers in Groningen at the end of October this year. Your support will help to cover the print cost, costs of the box for the memory game, designer, website and other, smaller, productions costs like travel costs.
As with all publishing, the risk of production, printer or shipping delays is always there. Since we do the entire production in The Netherlands, we have personal contact with every supplier and no external shipment for the printed matters.
We can confidently say that the partners we will collaborate with have produced excellent samples of the items that you will be receiving, and the production of said items should be a very smooth process. In order to preempt any unexpected setbacks, we have built in buffer time.
Our team has been preparing over the last half year to handle all possible contingencies, so if all goes as planned, we’ll get everything shipped without any delays!
We will keep you updated through email about our production process.
That said, Annette and Carina have both successfully published their respective books '(in matters of) Karl' (2015, Fw.:Books) and 'Like a Pearl in my Hand' (2017, The Eriskay Connection). So both of us have experience with realising a big project like this. We have gathered an equally experienced team around us and look forward to ship to you the memory game and other rewards!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
