Dargon Quest: The Tower of Doom is an English language video game built on the classic console RPG principles I grew up with and believe there is still a market for. It will be available for play on Windows, Mac OSX, Steam, iOS and Android
Note: The game is 95% done already; whole story is scripted and everything. The money for this project is to be used for replacing some placeholder art and adding better music in some areas.
Why 'Dargon Quest' ?
Originally I created Dargon Quest as a silly little 10 minute game in RPG Maker VX Ace to prove to my younger brother that it wasn't hard to make video games. I then posted a video of him trying to beat the game to my YouTube channel and it got a pretty positive response from viewers.
Around the same time, someone at Square-Enix screwed up and posted the iOS port of Dragon Quest as 'Dargon Quest' (source). This spawned an internet meme around the time I was working on this game. I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be funny if there was a real game called Dargon Quest that sought to parody some of the elements of the Dragon Quest series?" and thinking this was such a good idea, I made changes to my game to emphasis this aspect.
I've spent the past year and several hundred dollars fleshing the game out with original artwork for the monsters. I have also added some licensed music to improve the mood and atmosphere. I'd like to make the game even better and decided to launch this crowdfunding project to see if Dargon Quest: The Tower of Doom resonates with anyone else. If you think this game is cool, please pledge!
'Dargon Quest: The Tower of Doom' follows the adventure of Ashe, a silent protagonist who arrives on Dargon Island to conquer the Tower of Dargons, a mysterious structure that promises grand riches to those who can navigate its dungeon.
On Ashe's first adventure into the dungeon he is accompanied by Carlous, a self-styled legendary hero who wields a mysterious talking sword. Climbing the Tower gets Ashe involved in an ancient plot to take over the world.
The turn-battle system is familiar to anyone who has played classic JRPGs with one exception - every time Ashe's party leaves the Tower they lose all their experience points and character levels. This means in order to become stronger Ashe and co. need to climb far enough up the Tower to obtain stronger weapons and armor.
This mechanic is similar to the Ancient Cave quest in Lufia II (also known as Estopolis II in Japan) but is also seen in games like Mystery Dungeon and Azure Dreams.
One unique twist on gameplay is that characters generally do not gain spells as they level up. Instead the items they equip grant them access to spells and skills, so having characters equip different combinations of items in order to gain access to skills unique to certain equipment is required for optimal play.
There's 60 unique pieces of monster artwork in the game already. Here's a sample of what some of it looks like.
Some of the art I will commission with the money from this project is custom battle backgrounds, replacing the placeholder art currently in use. The same artist who drew the monster sprites / title screen will be creating the backgrounds to ensure the styles match.
WHY HELP THIS GAME GET MADE?
I have no ambitious desires to revolutionize the game industry. I just want to make a fun little game that stays true to the gameplay of the RPGs I played growing up, and that other people like me will enjoy.
If you've watched any of my YouTube channel videos you'll know I am a huge fan of RPG videogames. It's always been my dream to make my own games and although this is a small little project not intended to revolutionize anything, I think it's a fun little story that I'd like to share with others.
If 'Dargon Quest' sells even 100 copies I will consider it to be a success and worth investing time to make more games.
I guess what I'm saying is that if this project is successful I will start making videogames, because I will know there is a market for the games I make. So if that sounds good to you then help me make this game a reality :)
The original version of this game was built in RPG Maker VX ACE. However I will be importing the data into the newest version -- RPG Maker MV -- which will allow for the game to be played on Windows, Mac OSX, Steam, iOS and Android.
During the import to MV I will be enhancing the look of the dungeon maps, adjusting the look and feel while also increasing the screen resolution size.
I already pre-ordered RPG Maker MV so this will definitely be happening.
( I realize some people look down on RPG Maker games, but I think it is just a game engine no different than Unity. What is important is the game made with the engine, not the software used to make the game. )
I only need about $500 from this project to commission the remaining original artwork and license more original battle music to finish the game as I envision it, but on the chances I raise more than the goal here's what I'd do with the money:
$1,000 - Add more monsters (requires more art).
$2,000 - Add a 20 floor bonus dungeon for the post-game (requires new art).
$5,000 - Add an animated opening movie to the title screen (anime style!).
I would be really surprised if I raised more than $5,000 so if the goal exceeds that I will have to figure out what the stretch goals would be. Probably something involving a boxed copy of the game with a USB stick.
Risks and challenges
The game is 95% complete in terms of design. The remaining 5% is just replacing art assets with custom, wholly original ones.
This game is able to be produced cheaply because I do not need a team of coders; I have done all the scripting myself. Most of the art was also pre-created before I started this project, and I've already licensed several music tracks for level ambiance. This project is only for completion funds and to gauge interest.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
