About

TL;DR: Explore an open world in third-person as the dragon Nim and discover purpose. Fight creatures and colossal bosses for equipment to evolve your gameplay style.

The Ashlands and outlying regions--just a portion of what The All will be

This Kickstarter will allow me to:

  • Greatly enhance the graphics for The All (beyond what you see in the video)
  • Create a vast open-world experience
  • Animate Nim and every other creature in The All
  • Work full-time (40-70 hrs a week) on the game for the next year and a half
  • Buy a year and a half's worth of ramen
  • Put together a game that's made for the community--for the gamers, by the gamers

My name is Morghan Chadwick. I'm the only member of Caret Games. The All is my passion project--It means a great deal to me. My hope is to be able to finish The All by January of 2017, with the help of the Kickstarter community.

The All is an action-adventure, open-world RPG set in a post-apocalyptic Earth. It draws heavy gameplay inspiration from games such as Spyro (dragon dynamics), Dark Souls (gritty situations and top-notch level design) and Shadow of the Colossus (colossal creatures and open environment).

You are the dragon Nim. Guided by your progenitor, The Visitor, you search for your purpose through a lush and wondrous world--a world that's crowded with exotic creatures, each more dangerous than the last.

  • Combat is real-time, allowing you to set the pace. Factoring in equipment and player skill, combat gameplay can range from a slow and steady pick-em-off one at a time to a fast-paced hack-n-slash.
  • In-game, the camera is positioned behind Nim, giving the player an OTS (over-the-shoulder) third-person experience.
  • Forged in the Unreal 4 game-engine, the environment in The All aims for a blend of realism and the extraordinary.

Stretch Goals

Who is Nim?
Nim--the hero of the story, is a young dragon, though his physical
form is extraordinarily adaptable. He's able to absorb an enemy's traits. Nim's hunger for growth drives him through The All, and aids him in his quest to find purpose.

Who is The Visitor?
It falls to Earth, life created in its wake. Settling on a single stone, It whispers a muted song that rids it of its stillness. It settles further, within the now dancing stone. "This is your home," It says to the stone, "To reach a distant place, I've given myself to you. With every step, I will fade, and you will become truth."

The Visitor is Nim's mentor and creator and guides the young dragon on his quest.

The Ashlands is a harsh environment, full of brutal terrain and aggressive creatures
The Ashlands is a harsh environment, full of brutal terrain and aggressive creatures

"The floating stone looks to be a container of sorts. Perhaps a ship, long forgotten. A relic of a past civilization."

Enemies in The All are primarily just creatures living as creatures live. Some are completely neutral, while others are territorial or naturally aggressive. Will you avoid them? Will you attack? Will you use stealth to move forward?

Successfully defeating an enemy is one of many ways to obtain new equipment, strength, and power.

Turf Worm
Turf Worm

-The Great Turf Worm | An evolved form of the aggressive Turf Worm-
Every living creature knows that worms are top-level predators. What they may not know is that when worms exhaust an area's prey, they often resort to cannibalism. Cannibalism tends to cause extreme deformities, and more often than not, they don't survive for long. Those few that beat the odds become an Earth-rending force.

"I believe this serpentine creature to be a leader, or alpha of its species."

-Damasca Viral | Her song brings all of her food right to her-
The living travel from every corner of the land to hear the lulling melody that rings like an endless bell atop the floating rock. The song promises perpetual comfort and joy evermore. Those brave enough to seek the source find the Roost of the Damasca Viral.

"The melody produced by the arachnid appears to bewitch creatures. Resist any sudden impulses, Nim."

-The Troll | Generations of bad choices and poor taste-
Vile personified, the Troll is often mistaken for a clump of hairy dung. Not long after the encounter comes a smelly unfortunate end to the poor fool who happened upon it. An enemy of the sunlight, the Troll does its travelling at night. Despite its greasy notoriety, all creatures that know of the Troll also know how formidable it is.

"Few have I encountered as foul as this one. I advise you to ration your air intake."

-The Phoenix | Lord of the sky-
The rule of the world is that every creature starts with life and ends with death. Every creature that is, except for the Phoenix. For the Phoenix, there is no past, there is no future, there is no death. There is only perpetual existence in the now.

"How foolish this creature is to reveal the secret to its immortality--an apparent novice to the concept. Do not despair, young Nim. No being is truly immortal."

Out of the many features in The All, equipment is one of the larger focuses. No two play-throughs should be the same.

Different equipment changes the gameplay extensively--and not exclusively in combat. Equip wings, and flight is possible. Dig and tunnel, swim, charge. Plant your feet firmly with heavier feet equipment to brace for enemy impact. Use the same method while you have wings equipped to send gusts toward advancing creatures.

"Your handle on flight is remarkable, dragon Nim. You truly belong to Earth."

Below are a few concept drawings of equipment. In-game, it's up to you to determine their uses.

In addition to equipment, Body Archetypes allow further customization by allowing focus on certain attributes like Strength, Defense, and Speed. These attributes are highlighted by their physical alteration.

"Adding mass to your physique will minimize damage taken to your body. Slimmer body structure is a bigger damage risk, but provides the means for swift and dexterous movement."

I'd like to thank my Grandfather, who used to narrate Nim's noble feats to my brother and I. Nim, in reality, was just a cat-sized dragon statue who lived beneath the dead tree in my grandparent's garden. But according to my grandfather's story, the "real" Nim was our great defender. He kept my brother and I safe from the Plum-Tree Troll (who lived in the stand of plum trees adjacent to the rock garden). Now, as everyone knows, if there is anything a Plum-Tree Troll likes more than a plump little boy for breakfast, it is a second one for dessert.

Thank you, Grandpa. Thank you, Nim. I enjoy my life not being troll-food.

TL;DR: Kickstarter holds the boss-key to unlocking this game's reality, and ensures that it becomes a community-driven project.
The All is my passion project. I've spent the last 9 months working full time, learning to do everything necessary to make The All into a reality. Along with the support of my family, I've invested my savings into The All with the goal of starting my own legacy. Kickstarter isn't the only avenue of funding that I am pursuing for the game, but with the support of the Kickstarter community, The All will be realized as more than just a passion project. I'd like to give back to all of my supporters by building something that's founded on that very support, and that includes the input and creative power of a vast number of contributors. If we reach our goal together, then our success is shared, and you get to be a part of a genre-bending revolution in Nim’s quest to become his truest self.

Risks and challenges

I promise to continually strive to improve The All. Better graphics, quality dialogue, unique environments.

In my case, the risks and challenges come down to two things: the budget and unforeseeable landmarks. I will absolutely continue to work on the game no matter what. Your support can make The All so much more than my work alone can. If the Kickstarter is unsuccessful, the release date and quality of the game will be dependent on the amount of work I can put into the project in my spare moments, rather than being able to focus on the development of The All exclusively. The goal for release is January of 2017.
