Each player takes the role of a Pirate Captain and commands a unique Pirate ship to move through The Serpent's Pass, gathering cards that will help them manipulate dice, modify rolls, and even move other ships!
Follow along with the campaign to read the back stories of each of the Captains in our updates.
Captain Cat (from Take the Gold) and Captain Goat (from BattleGoats) are special Captains that will not be included in later copies of the game.
With a Captain and a ship selected, players will start just off the board in The Dread Sea. The flag starts in the Dread Captain's wrecked ship in the opposite corner.
Players will roll dice as they move their ships along the pass gathering supplies and battling for the flag. The Pirate's Flag gives you lots of options on how to move; stop at a Trading Post, backtrack and prepare an ambush, or speed ahead down a waterfall -- the strategy is up to you!
Every time you pass one of the docks, you’ll draw a card. Sometimes it might be more beneficial to drop back and gather supplies while your enemies come to you.
The cards you draw from docks can be played at any time, on any players turn. There’s no waiting until it’s your turn to be able to make choices or take actions. Every card in the game is unique so no two games will be the same.
There are two times when a player may stop their movement early; at a Trading Post, or to initiate a battle.
Trading posts allow players to stop their movement and discard a card. If you discard a card, you draw two new cards.
When a player has the flag and is headed back for The Dread Sea, you can stop your movement on their location to initiate a battle! Battles are 1 vs. 1 die roll, with the highest roll winning. There must always be a clear winner, there are no ties in battle!
Cards can be used in battle just as they can be used during movement.
If you are successful in battle, you capture the flag and get to roll again to escape.
The player who gets the flag off the board into The Dread Sea is the winner!

Full Game Play-throughs
We want to throw out a quick, "Thank you!" to the hundreds of players who joined us at the tables at conventions including GenCon, PAX Unplugged, GameStorm, RAGECon, Protospiel San Jose, Gem State Gaming Convention, SnafuCon, MeepleCon, SaltCon, and other events while testing and refining The Pirate's Flag. Without players like them and backers like you, we wouldn't exist.
At CardLords, we strive to make our games the best they can be from the start, so we won't artificially inflate our stretch goals with component upgrades and things that we already planned to included.
- Game Board upgraded to 2mm thick.
- Box upgraded to 2mm thick.
- Cards use a high quality 310gsm blue/grey/black core with a gloss finish to allow for the vibrant artwork to pop while maintaining maximum durability for years to come.
- Plastic Ship Minis are injection molded plastic.
- 6 players included from the start.
- 6 Unique colors were chosen for the ships to make them easy to tell apart.
- 6 Unique Ship designs are included from the start, allowing those with trouble seeing colors to still easily identify their ships.
- Custom molded plastic insert to hold everything in the box.
- All game boxes will ship in custom designed corrugated mailer boxes to reduce chance of damage during transit.
That being said, there are a few fun and cosmetic upgrades we could do if funding exceeds the amount needed to manufacture the game.
At $18,000 we will have stickers made of small little skulls and crossbones to add to the flags. Just another way to pirate the game up a little more!
At $21,000, we'll be able to make a small upgrade to the board which will give the flag a place to start. This is something we've talked about for a while as it fits the theme and the story, putting the flag in the back of the Dread Captain's ship, and actually putting it there to start feels better than simply laying it on the space. It's also more fun for the player who takes it out of her ship the first time, giving them that bonus +1 to their hand size the rest of the game!
Captains are dual sided, with their card text on one side and full art on the other. This upgrade would allow us to do some really cool highlighting on the full art side to make the Captain artwork really pop and look awesome.
Risks and challenges
This is our third time on Kickstarter, after having successfully funded both BattleGoats and Take the Gold previously. We've also done large scale printing with CardLords Tokens for the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, so we know many of the hurdles that can come our way.
Printing and shipping time are roughly 4-6 weeks each, and we will be ready to submit to the printer shortly after the campaign ends. We are also giving ourselves a little buffer time to ensure we can get The Pirate's Flag out to the players without any disappointments from delays. BattleGoats shipped to players almost a month early and Take the Gold shipped right on time. We'd like to replicate that success once again.
We never discount that the unexpected can happen. We will do everything we can to minimize the possible risks, and should any issues or delays arise, we will notify backers immediately.
