A homage to Irezumi, the traditional Japanese tattoo art form, the Sumi Playing Cards faithfully emulates the iconic elements of ukiyo-e, fantastical mythological creatures, and Heroes of the Marsh to forge a visual playing card masterpiece like no other. A masterpiece bursting with symbolic significance at every twirl of the cards.

On the tuck cases, a dragon "Kurikara-Ryūō (倶利伽羅龍王)" curling around a sword "Kurikara-Ken (倶利伽羅剣)". Kurikara-Fudō, the avatar of Acala (不動明王) the center one of Five Great Wisdom Kings.
There's a word "Kurikara Monmon (倶利伽羅紋紋)" meaning "(traditional Japanese) tattoo" in Japan. The origin of the word is from this kind of design.
The symbol logo using the kanji 墨, representing "ink" especially the very type that is used in Japanese tattoo, the style of ancient seal script that was inspired by the Siddhaṃ script (or Bonji or 梵字 in Japanese kanji). The use of the Siddhaṃ script also reflects the deep relations between Japanese Buddhism and traditional Japanese tattoo.
The siddhaṃ script on the flap means Acala. It's popular as a motif in Japanese tattoo.

Risks and challenges
For a project like Sumi Playing Cards, the risks can come in 3 aspects, the finalization of the deck design, the production, and the fulfilment. We have look into these aspects and got them covered.
For the deck design, we have finalized all the designs and they are ready to be sent to the printer once the project is funded. What you see on this page would be what you see when the decks arrived at your doorstep, if you back our project.
For production, we are working closely with Expert Playing Card Company. You can be assured of the quality of the handles and printing. Extra attention will also be given to ensure that the production schedule is timely.
For fulfilment, we will be fulfilling your rewards in Hong Kong to make sure that your playing cards reaches you in the quickest possible time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
