The Emerald Beetle is set in feudal Japan and follows the tale of a beautiful young maiden who is trapped by the strict laws of her family and the heavy hand of society. She is groomed to be the perfect bride - meek, quiet, and submissive. Confined by her grandfather, the woman has no choice but to do as she is told and spends day after day practicing her painting and calligraphy.
Then one day a Japanese beetle flies beneath her brush and she discovers that her ink has the power to change. The maiden transforms the beetle into a man and, finding her own quiet strength, she begins to rebel. But how long will her brushstrokes last?
Illustrated by Tina Jiang, 'The Emerald Beetle' revolves around the themes of control & freedom, reality & dreamworlds, and family honor vs self-acceptance.
THE MAIDEN: A creature of grace and beauty, she has never been outside the walls of her house and has never met a man she was not related to.
THE BEETLEMAN: A lowly beetle is transformed into a handsome man. He is finally able to court the beautiful maiden that he has watched for so long. But is his desire for the maiden truly his or does the ink control him?
THE GRANDFATHER: The patriarch of the family, the grandfather keeps the maiden under tight control while he searches for a suitable husband. He refuses to acknowledge her rights or desire to be free as his societal status depends on her absolute submission.

Risks and challenges
With 3 successful kickstarter projects and seven years of publishing experience, I have no doubt The Emerald Beetle will be completed.
All illustrations are finished, the text has been proofed and edited, files have been formatted and are ready to print. I'm using the same printer as with my previous books so there shouldn't be any surprises there.
I've factored in the time that it takes for the kickstarter funds to clear from the bank. From past projects, I've learned which packaging is most sturdy for shipping posters so they arrive undamaged.
If they are any set-backs, they will be handled with care and communication.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
