Years ago while working at an aviation company, I ran across a wall mount power charger during a 5s clean up. Since the power tool never turned up, I used it on my desk to prop up my smartphone. It looked something like this:

Some of my co-workers started telling me that I should make a carbon fiber stand for cell phones and tablets, and then they told me about Kickstarter. The design of the power charger was certainly not ideal for my purposes, so I started working on some designs for my friend's iPad and for cell phones. Around the same time, I saw a commercial for some rug grippers that used micro-suction, and I knew I wanted to try using something like that in my design.

 After a few early sketches...

 I decided I wanted something sleek with only one or two parts for ease of manufacturing. Here's the model we decided on.

We tested various laminate schedules to give us the proper rigidity, as we didn't want it to be too flexible or too thick. We tested different shapes for aesthetics, form, fit, and function.

This is the material of our choice because Carbon Fiber has the desired cosmetic finish and the mechanical properties for a superior strength to weight ratio. The carbon matrix can take flexing many times over at a single point and will retain its shape. This is also known as "spring-back".

                               Aluminum VS. Carbon Fiber

So if I drop a metallic/aluminum stand and a Carbon Fiber stand from the same height, the carbon fiber will not bend or warp as the metallic/aluminum will. Warping would pose a big problem with a designed part that requires a high tolerance flatness call out. The micro-suction material loses its suction power if the flatness profile is disrupted.

We're using a simple, three-pronged plan of attack to get the job done quickly and smoothly, while producing the highest quality parts possible.


A) Tooling- If the pledge amount funds at an early stage, we will begin the tooling as soon as possible. We have 1 set of tools available at this time, depending on the amount of funds pledged this will dictate the amount or type of tools needed. We can build a fully functioning tool in 1-2 days. These tools will be ready for a RTM/VARTM (Resin Transfer Molding/Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) process.


B) Production- Once the tooling is complete, we will begin production. All of our stands will be constructed by a RTM/VARTM process, this ensures a high quality laminated part and the most efficient use of a tool. We will be able to lay up and infuse multiple parts simultaneously, expediting the laminating process. The stands will be made locally in the USA by my team. We do have extensive background in rapid prototype tooling, fabrication, and lay-up from space, aerospace and aviation companies. Therefore, we do not have any learning curve associated with the build sequences. All of the materials used in this process are readily available, and of course the greater the quantity ordered, the cheaper the supplies.

C) Shipping and Delivery- All units will be shipped out with a delivery confirmation as well as new USPS boxes and packaging. As for the "out of country" folks, a $15.00 shipping charge was selected try to keep shipping costs as low as possible.  We are subsidizing almost half the shipping cost. Kickstarter does not allow shipping cost choices to many different regions, and that's understandable. We believe the $15.00 "out of country" shipping charge is fair.

We have been to three local packaging companies within the local area and I have selected one of the companies (Preferred Printing & Packaging in Ontario, CA) for all our design, package selection, and delivery. It is important to us that the company is willing to supply the packing in any quantities we need.  To expedite the rewards to the Kickstarter family we will not have the professional package included with these orders. You will receive your rewards in a basic package. This is to ensure that we fulfill our commitment to you by processing and sending out orders in a timely matter.

How is the money being spent?

 If the campaign reaches the goal, we will begin tooling and order materials.  Materials include 5.7oz twill carbon fiber, epoxy resin, and vacuum bagging consumables. Depending on the success of the campaign we will commission a reputable tooling firm to machine aluminum or steel mandrels. We will design the tooling in house to control the cost. 

Some of the money will also obviously need to be used for shipping.

We are a small crew with diverse background in aerospace composite manufacturing. This includes, but not limited to: design, CAD modeling, tooling, composite/plastic/metal fabrication, rapid prototyping, quality assurance/control, lean manufacturing, and process engineering. 

Key team members:

Randy Moruzzi - I am the inventor and engineering technician and will oversee day to day operations. 15 years composites experience in boat, automotive, aerospace, space, and aviation fields.

Robby Moruzzi - Proficient in design, pattern building, tooling, laminating, and vartm. 8 years experience in aerospace, space, and aviation fields.

Constantin Iancu - Document and material control. 20 years CNC experience. Former engineer in his native land, Romania.

Risks and challenges

Risks-
With this project we have an advantage because we design and construct patterns, tools, and parts in house. The initial prototypes have come out beautifully and our process is a proven industry standard in aerospace. We're simply applying our combined experience and expertise on some great new ideas for the consumer. By keeping all of our design and manufacturing in house we don't have to pay middle-men or sacrifice quality by out sourcing labor.

Overcoming the prospected issues-

The biggest roadblock would be the funds for the materials/tooling needed to complete the project. If the projected amount can be met, the materials can be ordered to build patterns, tools, and parts so everyone can enjoy this product.
