What's this all about?
We all have irrational, ridiculous, and nonsensical ideas that we cling to. Maybe you're deathly afraid of spiders, or GMOs, or gluten? That's OKAY! If you aren't, your friends probably are. And their Facebook posts will NOT LET YOU FORGET IT.
That's the driving theme behind Carbon Dating. If you can get people to laugh at their favorite pseudoscience, maybe they won't take it so seriously.
Carbon Dating is a bi-weekly comic strip published free online and also found in two national magazines; The Skeptical Inquirer and Skeptic Magazine. Currently, new comics are posted every Tuesday and Friday - but we want it to become a daily comic strip. We want to bring you a new comic strip every day.
What? A new comic strip every day?
That's right! To do this, I need the help of another cartoonist:
Elisa Wikey (@elisawikey) is a talented Denver artist with a Bachelors in Children's Book Illustration. She's crazy good, way better than I am.
Hiring Elisa would allow me to become a full time nerd comedy writer, and to finally give the characters and topics the depth they deserve. It would also get Elisa one step closer to her dream of becoming a professional freelance artist.
Over the last year and a half, I've drawn over a hundred comics. All of these have been collected into CARBON DATING Vol 1: "Experiments in Cohabitation". With your help, we can release the second volume in five months. That's less than half the waiting you were doing before! More precisely, it is exactly 27.7 (repeating, of course) percent of the waiting you were doing before.
What will this money do?
If we reach our goal, Elisa will be guaranteed six months of pay to draw a new comic every day. Each comic strip takes several hours to write, pencil, ink, letter, and tweak - not to mention the blog posts, moderating, promoting, and reformatting for print. We will be able to divide the labor, with Elisa handling the pencils and ink, and Kyle handling the rest.
WE HIT OUR FIRST GOAL IN 3 DAYS!
-and we are excited to get started on fulfilling our rewards! But we don't want to stop there. The initial amount was what we needed to make it a daily comic strip. But what I REALLY want is a daily comic strip in FULL COLOR!
$4500 - A Carbon Dating Podcast!
Tristan and I will be hosting a live science outreach event in Colorado Springs we're lovingly calling Super Science Mashup. We will liverecord from the events, as well as additional content specifically for Carbon Dating readers. Running a podcast is a big commitment, and we'll recruit help to make sure it's top notch.
$6000 - FULL COLOR!!
As Mitch would say: "LOOKING GOOD AND WINNING!" This is the stretch goal I am truly hoping for. Elisa wants to add watercolor washes in a style reminiscent of the indispensable Bill Watterson.
$7000 - KYLE WILL WAX HIS CHEST!
Did we mention that Abbey has a thing for Hugh Jackman? Well, it was her idea. Kyle will wax his chest and broadcast his suffering to the world in HD as the kickoff to the Podcast.
Where can I find Carbon Dating?
Carbon Dating is currently published twice-weekly on CarbonComic.com. Strips are also published in print in the Skeptical Inquirer, a national science magazine. Kyle also draws full-page comics for Skeptic Magazine which feature original stories on pseudoscientific topics in the same visual style. You can keep track with updates through this Kickstarter, or at CarbonComic.com/Kickstarter as well.
Risks and challenges
Wow, looks like we underestimated how many people would love to see themselves in the comic strip. My previous record is drawing 30 comics in 30 days, so it's going to be a long month of drawing reward! But this is a great problem to have, with both of us drawing full-tilt, we'll build up a safety buffer of comics in no-time, and be that much closer to the second volume. I will shoot for getting them all drawn in August, but it will be close!
If we reach the stretch goals, both Kyle and Elisa will hit the drawing table hard to produce lots of brand new content. It will take 2-3 weeks to generate new exclusive art for the digital edition, but we're already working on that as we speak.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
