Welcome to the margins! We're a brand-new subscription box for readers of young adult fiction. This box focuses on marginalized authors, and at launch, we're highlighting BIPOC authors--Black, Indigenous, and person of color. We're living in a time that has more BIPOC authors than ever, but often times, they don't get the same marketing and promotion as other authors do. But it's so important that their voices be heard. Expanding reading horizons leads to expanding personal worldviews. With that in mind, we want to highlight these diverse voices and their stories, and we hope it gives our readers a broader perspective.
Each month, readers receive a new release (within the last 45 days) young adult novel from a BIPOC author, plus goodies chosen to fit the theme of the novel of the month! Box contents vary, but readers can look forward to items like:
- Lip balms
- Art prints
- Key chains
- Enamel pins
and more! The items within the box will fit the marginalized theme as well--items sourced for boxes will be from marginalized makers. The fun of subscription boxes is getting surprise treats each month, so we won't give too much away. But we promise it'll be worth it!
Adrianne and cara make up the tiniest collective known as Auto 8 Collective. We write, we review, we make things, we geek out about books--and now we make subscription boxes! We've been writing for a combined total of well over half a century, and reading for even longer than that. As fans of young adult titles, we feel confident we can create amazing boxes that will take reading experiences to the next level. But we need your help!
Starting a business takes time and, of course, money. By donating to our campaign, you'll help us get books by BIPOC authors into the hands of young adult readers, one box at a time.
We've budgeted the largest amount of our fundraiser for sourcing box contents--both books and goodies. The budget here will provide us with enough money for three months' worth of boxes, which is enough time to get ourselves a little more established so that we can build a customer base.
The next-largest amount will be to fund Kickstarter rewards, including shipping and fees. Next, our budget goes to packaging. This will include things like shipping boxes, stickers, packing inserts, and custom content cards. Finally, our money will be used to fund web hosting, site design, and any other electronic/tech software we may wind up needing.
Even more importantly, if we have the funds to get ourselves established, we'll be able to provide more boxes for readers, both quantity and type! We aim to expand into producing boxes for middle grade and young readers, as well as a box featuring LGBTQ+ authors. With this seed money, expanding into this territory can happen sooner!
Each level of donation receives mention on the backer's page on the marginsbox website. For backers who receive a box (or more) with their donation, here's something exciting--you'll be receiving a special exclusive Kickstarter backer box as your first box! This special box will be different from the boxes regular subscribers will receive just to show our appreciation for your support.
For backers purchasing 3 or more months worth of boxes, please note that the shipping cost listed is for the cumulative number of months you'll be receiving a box. For example, if you purchase 6 months of boxes, the shipping total is for 6 months of shipping.
Because we're just two people, the number of box rewards will be limited so that we still have space to add subscribers at the official launch, should all the box rewards be maxed out. So if you want a box but the reward level you want is sold out, never fear--you'll still be able to subscribe in April!
We're big dreamers here at marginsbox, so we've already got ideas for what to do should we shoot past our initial funding goal. We'll eventually branch into LGBTQ+ boxes and children's/middle grade boxes, but if we reach our stretch goals, we'll be able to get there much sooner!
We sincerely thank you for reading this far, and for considering a donation. This is hugely important to us and we hope we receive a lot of support for this. All teens deserve to see themselves reflected in what they read, and through this box, we aim to help spread more reflections to more people.
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest issues we may run into is with packing and shipping a large number of orders. We're just two people, after all. However, with enough backer funding, we'll hire some helpers to get boxes out the door in a timely manner.
We're also aware that it may be difficult to curate items for such a project. Our solution here is to make sure we cast a wide enough net--ask friends, neighbors, fellow bookish people, etc. We have experience finding talent and can easily overcome any potential pitfalls.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
