What is Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is a website where people support the ideas they like. If you want to buy one or more iCapes for your salon, barbershop or your stylist...or you just want to see the project succeed...please support it!
You can back iCape at any dollar amount. After you select the product you want (on the right), you'll be asked to create a Kickstarter account (it's fast) and then you'll be taken to Amazon to pay. You will only be charged when the entire amount is raised, which ensures project success. Smart.
We live in a connected world. Our smartphones are the windows into our personal and professional lives. It's no surprise that we check our phones more than 150 times a day...that's once every seven minutes.
Today, however, salon time is down time. Haircuts are messy and smartphones and iPads are expensive, so we feel compelled to keep them safe, clean and dry in our pockets, purses, briefcases or backpacks. But that leaves us feeling disconnected and left out.
What if you could turn a cut-and-color into productive time? Reach out to friends and family, stay in touch with the office or just read that best seller you downloaded a month ago. Now you don't have to be cut-off when you get your hair cut.
Introducing the iCape®
The iCape by Capemakers is the new hair cutting cape that keeps you connected. Text, email, or surf when getting your hair styled, all while keeping your device safe, clean and dry. Young children can play games while stylists cut their hair safely and quickly with minimal movement.
The iCape was thoughtfully designed to deliver a delightful salon and barbershop experience. It features a privacy panel behind the window, sewn on three sides forming a large pouch that you just put your hands and device in. The PrivacyPouch is also great for holding your phone if you're walking around the salon.
If you want to listen to music, audiobooks or watch YouTube, you can pass headphones through the CordCover.
Attract New Customers
For salons and barbershops that want to attract and retain the next generation of clientele to grow their businesses, the iCape delivers a delightful, differentiated customer experience enabling patrons to stay connected and relax. Now your customers don't have to go dark when they're getting highlights.
If you cater to kids, or do home haircuts, the iCape offers peace of mind for parents when sharp scissors are nearby. Active children slow down and hold still when they're engaged with a game or watching a show. The iCape lets you cut kids' hair faster and more safely, which means more revenue and bigger tips.
The iCape is easy to care for. Like most fine haircutting capes, it's machine washable and air dries quickly.
iCape v2.0 ... the Upgrade
The first version of the iCape was manufactured and distributed under license to a large, speciality manufacturer of beauty products. We learned a lot from our first release of iCape. We sold 20K units and got some stellar reviews on Amazon:
★★★★★ Colleen McDanniel Elliott - "I love it and my clients love it! Wish it came in more colors."
★★★★★ Martin Dinh - "Wonderful product. I love this. The design is very nice and the material isn't too hot. Definitely recommend it!!"
★★★★★ N.H. - "Glad I found this. I just need a cape for family haircuts at home, and this fits the bill...I am thrilled that it has the window so my son can be entertained with the iPad while I cut his hair. I have trouble getting him to look down when I want to cut the back because he's usually watching tv."
But there are a couple of things we want to improve based on customer feedback. So now we're working on the upgrade, which we're producing and selling on our own. iCape 2.0 will be 4"- 6" longer (~44" x ~64") so clothes stay covered when users pull the cape up to see their screens better. The new iCape will come in at least four colors, probably including black, blue, red and green. Finally, the window in iCape 2.0 will be slightly larger to accommodate tablets with 10" screens. (Note that supporters will be able to pick their choice of colors at the end of the campaign.)
iCapes are primarily hand sewn in large quantities and packaged in sturdy, clear box-grade plastic. The capacitive plastic used in the clear window of the iCape is off-the-shelf and easily sourced. Customers loved the lightweight, crinkle nylon material and the extra–long, adjustable snap neck closure, which we're planning to keep in v2.0. The Teflon treatment on the fabric resists water, stains and wrinkles.
We're in discussions with two experienced, domestic cape manufacturers to make the iCape 2.0, including the original manufacturer. We are also considering several experienced Chinese manufacturers that we could work with directly. Production in North America can be turned around slightly faster than producing the product in Asia but the costs will also be marginally higher.
With a similar packaging form factor as the iCape 1.0, a single pallet can support about 1,000 iCapes.
Patents & Trademarks
"iCape" is a registered trademark and the product is patented. Capemakers was awarded U.S. Pat. 8418264 in 2013 based on the initial design with a second patent pending. We will file a third patent as part of this Kickstarter campaign.
We Need Your Help
We hope the Kickstarter community loves the iCape by Capemakers and we're asking for your support. Whether you're a connected customer, individual stylist or salon owner, please help us bring the next generation of hair cutting cape to your salon or barbershop.

Risks and challenges
We believe the risks involved with bringing iCape 2.0 by Capemakers to market are minimal at this stage.
First, we have more than 24 months of market experience with iCape 1.0, which has earned a five star rating on Amazon.
Second, the customer-driven enhancements to iCape 2.0 are important for the market but relatively trivial to implement (i.e. new colors).
Third, haircutting cape manufacturing is well understood today and there are many manufacturers producing standard capes without windows.
The primary risk to the project is Capemakers' inexperience with overseeing the actual production of the product itself, which was handled by the licensee that manufactured iCape 1.0. To mitigate this risk, we are inclined to contract with an established haircutting cape manufacturer. This will likely increase unit costs while de-risking execution. As long as cost increases are marginal, this will be an acceptable trade-off.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
