An adaptive portable light show
The Firefly Pick is simultaneously the simplest and most mesmerizing visual effect in a guitarists arsenal. Play it as you would any other pick and let our carefully tuned algorithms perform a synchronized light show alongside you, pulsing the embedded lights perfectly in time with the music. The Firefly Pick accommodates fast and slow action as well as rapid changes in tempo.
What is the Firefly Pick?
The Firefly Pick is the most intelligent pick you have ever played with. The high brightness LED's are driven by a high speed sensor system that can detect playing styles of all kinds. This is all powered by an ultra-thin lithium-ion battery and is rechargeable via micro USB. With high quality components, this pick will last many years.
Indiscriminate displays of brilliance
Whether you are playing on an electric or acoustic guitar, bass, or ukulele, the Firefly Pick doesn't discriminate. The analog sensor system intelligently detects even the quietest picking action, while simultaneously ignoring the unrelated motions of your environment.
We have experimented with every aspect of the Firefly Pick. From the choice of the most energy dense battery to the energy efficient LEDs to the diffusion of light throughout the plastic. No rock was left unturned in our quest for the optimal solution.
Playability and profile have always been the highest priority with the Firefly Pick. Fortunately, modern rapid prototyping technology via 3D printing has allowed us to iterate the shape and feel along with professional musicians, to converge on the perfect shape.
Rechargeable and efficient
Each component of the Firefly Pick has been carefully chosen and configured for efficient power usage. The Firefly Pick is rechargeable using a standard micro USB cable (included to backers receiving a Firefly Pick).
Available LED colors
The Firefly Pick is always white when resting, and the black logo is opaque. However, we can produce Firefly Picks with almost any color of LED. Backers who are receiving a Firefly Pick can choose from any of the 9 colors shown below. After the Kickstarter campaign we will restrict options to the 3 most popular colors, for practical reasons.
Note that the images shown below are a real (but crude) light diffusing prototype backlit by the corresponding Firefly Pick LED lights. The images show the resulting diffused light color of the final prototype. The plastic is still white for all of these colors
The perfect Firefly
Although it is labor intensive to program a unique color into a Firefly Pick, it is possible, so we are making the option open to our strongest backers, who pledge $99 or more. This Firefly Pick can be chosen from any location on an RGB color wheel with 8-bit accuracy, and will be one of a kind in the world. Experiment with color options using our color wheel and selector page here.
We need your support
We designed the Firefly Pick, added features, added some more features, and then refined and simplified everything over the past year. We have already put countless hours into the project. However, hard work and design expertise can only take us this far. To mass produce Firefly Picks, we need support from people like you.
Help spread the word!
Once we make this first batch of Firefly Picks we will have the momentum to keep going, but to get there we need people to back our Kickstarter campaign.
If you're already a backer, you can help out a lot more by just sharing a link to our project with your friends on Twitter and Facebook.
Risks and challenges
The Firefly Pick has already been successfully prototyped using multiple pick shapes, assembly styles, and circuit board enclosures.
The primary risk in manufacturing the Firefly Pick is achieving the extremely thin walls that are needed to create a low profile guitar pick. We have discussed this challenge with many manufacturing partners and vendors, and our funding goal reflects the quotes needed to achieve this resolution with high quality in mass production.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have a working prototype which uses a cheaper version of the final board. The final prototype will use a professional manufactured 10 mil PCB which matches the size of the white plastic prototype image.
The Firefly Pick looks and feels like a 3mm Big Stubby pick.
This is more than just a guitar pick. The Firefly Pick has more complexity than most >$100 pedals and is smaller than a hearing aid that also costs >$100.
